On this Boxing Day, we take a moment to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of service workers in our communities.

Historically, since Victorian times, Boxing Day has been rooted in the tradition of giving. Boxing Day serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and support for those who dedicate their lives to serving others.

Let’s reflect on their hard work and commit to engaging with our communities to foster kindness and appreciation.

What we mean by sure-footed is that goats are able to keep themselves safe as they navigate difficult terrain.

Goats have hard shells and spongy food pads for their hooves. This makes it easier for them to stand on small cracks.

Goats are wired to be playful and look forward to forming strong bonds with each other and humans. To form your own bond with one of our goats, you have the opportunity to sponsor them at www.stathorsesanctuary.org/meet-the-animals !

All of our goats are super sweet and personable! They would LOVE to have your support and friendship 🧡

Did you know that goats have 63 degrees of binocular vision that allows them to jump and/climb over difficult terrain?

They are very sure-footed animals!

Their vision also helps them see moving objects from a distance and that allows them quickly get out of the way before the danger occurs.

With their sure-footedness and excellent vision, it is important to establish trust with goats. A movement that is too quick can easily startle the goats and cause them to scurry away. By establishing trust with goats, like learning their name and practicing gentle movements, you will have an easier time getting close to them to pet and feed them.

Plan a visit to Pattie's Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM to say hi to the horses and their friends! Bring the whole family, some carrots, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy🥕.

What Greg said!

Visit Pattie's Ranch on Saturdays from 8 AM to 12 PM to greet our furry friends and show them similar excitement like they do when they make their bleating noise.

When goats bleat that is their way of greeting their companions. They are encouraging you to approach them and say hi!

Understanding that a goat's horns is a genetic trait that they have is crucial for their care and management. Both male and female goats can develop horns, which serve multiple purposes, including self-defense and natural behaviors (i.e. rooting and scratching)

However while horns can protect against predators, they may also lead to injuries, such as getting stuck in fences.

Many argue that the process called budding is inhumane and unnatural. Budding, the removing of horn-producing cells, must be approached with caution as improper techniques can severely harm the animal.

Understanding these traits is essential when caring for animals!

Visit Pattie's Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM to say hi to our goats and other friendly animals! Bring the whole family, some carrots for the horses, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy🥕

Did you know that typically an average chicken will consume up to 1.5 pounds of chicken feed in one week? This helps to maintain their health, and it also helps to maximize their productivity 🧡 Of course, the amount of feed differs depending on chicken's age and size! As a matter of fact, baby chicks typically will only eat one to two ounces of feed per day during their first eight weeks! This will change as the baby chick gets older.

Whether it is an adult chicken or a baby chick, the best way to determine their feeding needs is by checking their feeder(s) after they eat their fill!

Click on the images and scroll down to follow the chick to their feed!

Properly feeding chicks is vital for their growth, development and overall health. The right feed helps chicks develop a healthy digestive system. A healthy digestive system helps to promote the absorption of nutrients and development of their immune system.

Ground-style feeders help reduce contamination between the chicken's feed and any bedding or debris on the ground.

Chickens tend to kick up and scratch at the ground which runs the risk of contaminating their feed if it is not properly placed. But with a chicken feeder, there is a "safety net" that helps minimize the elements from getting into their feed!

Help us continue to cover the costs of our chickens' care and feed when you donate at www.stathorsesanctuary.org/donate

As the weather get colder, it is crucial that we keep birds like chicks and silkies protected and warm.

For chicks, they have yet to be able to properly regulate their body temperature so heat lamps in the early stages of their life will help aid in their development.

As for silkies, since their feathers are not as together as those of regular chickens, they are EXTREMELY vulnerable to frigid temperatures!

Help keep our chickens warm when you donate $25 each month at www.stathorsesanctuary.org/donate!

Facing off for the new week!

Like horses, ducks are also social animals. They paddle, sleep soundly and forage for food together. When they are in their "paddlings," they feel safe in knowing that they have a friend who will warn them of any danger that may approach. This comfortability increases when ducks are in their natural environment (i.e a duck pond).

Happy Sunday! 🦆💚
