It’s real easy! All you have to do is put the long end over the horse’s neck, slide the halter over their nose, and then all that is left is to buckle it! By putting the long end of the lead over the horse’s neck, this ensures that you have more control over your horse. This is used when it is time to lead one of our horses out of their stall and to the grooming station 🙌 For more tips on horsemanship, come on out to Pattie’s Ranch on Saturday for our new volunteer orientation at 8 AM! Be sure to print and fill out our volunteer release of liability form. It can be found at the link in our bio or our website www.stathorsesanctuary.org. Once you have filled out the volunteer release of liability form, you will turn it in on the day of your new volunteer orientation 😊 For more information on our new volunteer orientation or directions to Pattie’s Ranch, call Pattie Roberts at 951-733-3000 #savetheanimalstoday #pattiesranchhomeofstat #pattiesranch #stathorsesanctuary #statsanctuary #winchesterca #winchester #california #southerncalifornia #socal #equinetherapy #carrottherapy #personalwellness #horsemanship #horses #horse

Turnout improves horses’ health, mentally and physically! Horses are natural athletes 🙌 They should be given time to roam and exercise their muscles in order to continue to maintain their health. The freedom to move around helps with a horse’s digestion which significantly decreases a horse’s risk of colic. When it comes to turning horses out to pasture, not only is the exercise good for their muscles, it benefits their relationships with the other horses. Turnout for horses allows for them to participate in species-appropriate behaviours so that they are safer to handle when around people. Horses are herd animals, so they enjoy being close to one another 🧡 When horses are turned out with other horses, they tend to feel safer to lie down and/or rest. However, group turnout also lets horses engage in play and mutual grooming behaviors. Visit Pattie’s Ranch this Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM to connect with our beautiful horses! Bring the whole family, some carrots for the horses, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy🥕#savetheanimalstoday #pattiesranchhomeofstat #pattiesranch #ranch #stathorsesanctuary #statsanctuary #sanctuary #horses #horse #equinetherapy #carrottherapy #personalwellness #winchesterca #winchester #california
Horses help reduce stress in children! The benefits of children building a relationship with a horse are that they get to be in touch with nature! By spending time with horses, children are able to stay active and take time away from the tablet and/or TV. Also, children are taught responsibility when they learn how to take care of a horse. Whether it is feeding, grooming, exercising or cleaning, children will learn how to respect a horse’s space! Most importantly, horses make great friends. With their innate ability to understand human emotions through facial expressions and body language, they help teach children how to regulate their emotions with themselves and around others. Research has shown that working with horses helps to lower a child’s cortisol levels. This essentially means that it has been discovered that children experience a reduction in stress as they spend more time with horses. Visit Pattie’s Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM to connect with our horses! Volunteer work increases happiness, especially in teenagers! As teenagers volunteer, their brain releases “feel-good” hormones. This increases brain activity which contributes to wellbeing, self-image and overall joy. Volunteering also helps teenagers think and act beyond what may be worrying them, it improves mood and reduces stress! Teenagers are able to discover their full potential! It helps them feel an increased sense of accomplishment and motivation! They have the opportunity to expand their social circle. This allows for them to connect with other like-minded individuals like themselves and form long-lasting friendships! Teenagers gain new skills which, in doing so, boosts their confidence and sense of purpose. Get involved at Pattie’s Ranch as a volunteer today! The human-animal relationship can be defined as the degree of relatedness or distance between the animal and the human (National Library of Medicine). The more time that you spend with an animal, the more they will remember you. In order for this to happen, mutual recognition is important! (National Library of Medicine) By recognising that goats are prey animals, we as people can adjust our behaviours so that these animals can slowly understand that we can be trusted. Frequent social interactions between animals, like goats, and humans can help reduce stress (National Library of Medicine). As stress reduces, an improvement in mood, cognition and health become more apparent. Want to have more frequent interactions with our beautiful horses and other animals? 🧡 New volunteer orientation is every Saturday at 8 AM 🧡 We are open any Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM for you to bring carrots for the horses, say hi to the other friendly animals, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy 🥕For more information, contact Pattie Roberts at 951-733-3000#savetheanimalstoday #stathorsesanctuary #statsanctuary #pattiesranchhomeofstat #pattiesranch #winchesterca #winchester #california #volunteers #volunteer #personalwellness #carrottherapy #equinetherapy
Did you know? Goats mainly lie on their sternums. This is because goats are ruminants. They require plenty of rest and time as they build and maintain their bodies using only plant matter. When they lie down, this gives their bodies time to move feed particles from the rumen to the reticulum in order to help complete digestion of protein and other nutrients. Once goats complete digestion, the protein and other nutrients pass into the small intestine where they will be absorbed. Ruminants have been around for years and have needed to adapt based on how farming techniques and animals’ diets have changed. Ruminants come in all shapes and sizes! For example, deer, elk, antelopes, buffaloes, ibex and mouflons are also ruminants. Horses and donkeys are monogastric which means they have a single stomach and the essential fermentations that are necessary to digest forage in the hind gut. Pigs react strongly to noises of higher frequencies and intensity. This explains why the piglet was startled when Cabo whinnied.

Leah and Lowman, two horses on Pattie’s Ranch Home of STAT Sanctuary, have been best friends since they first met on their original owner’s farm. With their original owner, they were well taken care of but they didn’t get enough care and attention as horses should. Now, at our ranch, Leah and Lowman can spend the last of their days surrounded by loving companions.
Most importantly, they can continue to be at each other’s aids like birds of a feather 🫶🏻
