Pigs show humans affection through their eyes and actions!

When a pig comes closer to you, this is their way of communicating to you that they are at ease and relaxed in your presence. There are other signs that tell us that a pig is at ease and relaxed too!
🧡 Ears forward, nose sniffing up
🧡 Casually grazing
🧡 Playful moments like the zoomies
🧡 Relatively quiet with happy grunts every so often

These types of body language tend to be associated with submissiveness. In this case, this is a good thing! A submissive pig respects their place in the family and are well-mannered and well-trained.

Visit Pattie's Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM to say hi and become closer with the horses and their friends! Bring the whole family, some carrots for the horses, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy🥕

When it comes to their memory, pigs are able to recall short-term and long-term memories!

With their short-term memory, pigs are able to remember where food is stored. For example, after doing a command like "Sit" the pigs were rewarded with Cheerios from Kim's hand. As this continued, the pigs remembered where to go to get the treats and started doing "Sit" a lot quicker because they were also understanding the value that the Cheerios had.

When it comes to their long-term memory, however, pigs are able to develop a preference for a new object after several days of being repeatedly shown it. For example, when our piglets first got their new toys they were very hesitant to be near them. But after about a week or so, the piglets have started to push their toys around with little hesitancy.

But, most importantly, pigs remember how they are treated. It is crucial to maintain a gentle and calm demeanor so that the pigs know you are someone they can trust. Pigs are prey animals so they feel the most safe surrounded by their own and trusted humans.

Visit Pattie's Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM to make a difference and great memories! Bring the whole family, some carrots for the horses, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy🥕

The key to training a pig is to start when they are young. This is exactly what Kim, one of our volunteers, has begun doing! So far, she has been able to teach them "Sit" and "Come" and the pigs are picking up on it super fast! Even their mom, Penelope, is joining in on the fun. After listening to each command, Kim rewards the pigs with a Cheerio! The pigs are loving it and keep on coming back to practice the tricks and get more Cheerios :)

Pigs are reward-driven and thrive in environments where positive reinforcement is present. Some tricks take more time than others but that is okay! As long as you stay gentle and calm with the pigs during training, they will be sure to impress you no matter what 🧡

Interested in meeting our horses and their friends? Visit Pattie's Ranch on Saturdays from 8 AM to 12 PM to say hi to all of the horses' beautiful faces! Bring the whole family, some carrots for the horses, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy🥕

Pigs have weak eyesight which makes them very easy to startle. Since this happens, positive introductions are crucial to build their trust and help them get comfortable with their surroundings.

An example of a positive introduction that helps build trust and enhance comfort with pigs is reward-training. More often than not, the rewards tend to be treats. In the photo here, Kim is giving one of our piglets a Cheerio for listening to the sit command successfully. This was taken on Day Two of teaching the pigs to sit on command! They are really picking up on this trick 👏

Our goal is to harness train them which tends be a lot trickier of a command. By starting off with simple commands like "sit", we are getting the pigs comfortable with following instructions and accepting rewards for their good work.

🧡 Digesting food to be stored as energy
🧡 Maintaining growth, body temperature, and heart function
🧡 Breathing

Metabolic activities are important because they are what help horses balance and maintain homeostasis when exercising.

Happy Halloween! We hope everyone has a spooktacular night of delicious candy and great costumes 👻

Here are some valuable Halloween Safety Tips to keep in mind for your horse:
🎃 Be careful of lit pumpkins and candles! They may spook the horse or the horse's tail could knock them over and start a fire. To avoid this, be sure and double-check that pumpkins and candles are out of walkaways.
🎃 Keep horses away from anything chocolate! Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which are both toxic to horses. The PERFECT treat that you can give horses, however, are carrots! They would ABSOLUTELY love that :)
🎃 Tack pieces are the safest pieces for your horse to wear! These items won't cause a serious spook to your horse, and they provide a easy way to create a creative costume.

Donate $25 to our beautiful horses' care and feed at www.stathorsesanctuary.org/meet-the-animals to wish them a Happy Halloween!

Did you know that pigs are determined, reward-driven, independent thinkers? ⬇️

Training pigs is different than dogs because pigs are prey animals. They are easily startled and must be given time to warm to new activities. One way to help a pig get comfortable is to offer a reward. Pigs are reward-driven and become determined to solve a problem when offered belly rubs, food, or toys.

According to an experiment done by Eotvos Lorand University students, they observed how pigs and dogs acted when faced with an unsolvable task. The unsolvable task was an upside-down container with its lid secured. The pigs and dogs needed to figure out how to lift it up and get the food from underneath it. The researchers discovered that while dogs were more dependent on the humans for help, the pigs were faster at solving the task themselves since they were so determined to retrieve the reward from underneath the container.

The piglets are getting bigger everyday 😍 They are just about 6 weeks old! It's almost time to give them names 🙌 Stay tuned!

Did you know that sows in the same group will participate equally in maternal behaviors. This usually looks like one sow staying with the piglets while the other sows "forage." This decision plays a part in the social hierarchy of pigs.

The hierarchy includes:
❤️ A teat rank which is formed at around 1 week. The piglet who's first is usually the one who grows faster.
❤️ Socialization between the piglets tends to start at 5 weeks
❤️ Once piglets reach 14 to 17 weeks, they are at their most sensitive

The main takeaway from the social hierarchy of pigs is that it is based on domination and subordination.

Leah and Lowman can always be found not far from each other at Pattie's Ranch :) 🧡

Horses, in general, can always be found in close proximity with each other! They are known as herd animals, benefitting from social interaction in a variety of ways. The ways that horses socialize with each other in their herds are:
🐴 Horses are able to engage in play behavior
🐴 They get to exercise their senses frequently (i.e. smelling one another as a form of greeting)
🐴 They are able to develop their ability to subtly communicate to other horses in their herd through nonverbal cues (i.e. body language and posture)
🐴 There's "safety in numbers"

Visit Pattie's Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to 12 PM to say hi to the horses and their friends! A bond with a horse is extremely healing not just for yourself but for your relationship with your friends and/or family 😊

Horses are obligate nose breathers. This means that they can ONLY breathe through their nose, not their mouth. According to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, horses are stated to have 300 million olfactory receptors (sensory receptors in their nose that allow them to smell). To put it into perspective, human have around 5 to 6 million olfactory receptors. Overall, horses are quite perceptive of their surroundings just like how they are when it comes to reading others' emotions.

What horses use their heightened smell for:
🐴 To communicate with other horses about marking territory and hierarchy
🐴 To bond with each other within a herd
🐴 To find their food, water, and maybe some tasty treats
🐴 To reduce anxiety around new equipment or horses

Visit Pattie's Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to noon to say hi to our BEAUTIFUL and FRIENDLY horses and learn how to communicate with yourself and others through the healing bond with a horse! Bring the whole family, some carrots, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy.🥕

24/10/2024

Bo is still getting used to his fly mask as it gets put on, but once it's on he is a lot more comfortable in the hotter months. At Pattie's Ranch, we use fly masks during the summer so in the winter they will not be as present. But, we appreciate the time that we do have when fly masks are NECESSARY.

In the summer, fly masks are SUPER beneficial to help keep our horses happy as the temperatures get hotter.

Let's break it down!

Benefits of fly masks in the summer:
☀️ Helps reduce itchy eyes from allergies to pollen
☀️ Protects from sunburn
☀️ Reduces stress from flies and other insects
☀️ Comes in a variety of styles and sizes that fit each horses' needs

Overall, fly masks protect horses' sensitive skin and ensure that the horses remain comfortable throughout the warmer temperatures.

We LOVE fly masks and our horses enjoy the extra layer of protection from the sun and flies so much 😊

Visit Pattie’s Ranch any Saturday from 8 AM to noon to say hi to our horses and their friends. Bring the whole family, some carrots for the horses and donkeys, and experience the joys of 🥕Carrot Therapy.🥕
