💥 Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening disorder 💥
In the early stages, the stomach fills with gas, causing a simple gastric dilatation or "bloat".
Sometimes, the condition progresses no further than a bloat. A GDV, however, is a progression of the bloat into a obstruction due to twisting or knotting of the gastrointestinal tract. This is where the huge, gas-filled stomach twists upon itself so that both the entrance and exit of the stomach become blocked. This is a life-threatening emergency that requires emergency veterinary attention.
The exact cause of GDV is still unknown. Exercise after eating large meals or large amounts of water may increase risk though.
Studies have shown that large, deep-chested breeds are more prone to GDV. Predisposed breeds include Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Weimaraners, Labradors, German Shepherds, Boxers, Irish Setters, Gordon Setters, Standard Poodles, Basset Hounds, Doberman Pinschers, and Old English Sheepdogs.
While it is more common in these breeds, it should be noted any breed can bloat.
It is important to never feed your dog before going for a walk or vigorous exercise.
Signs of GDV include (rapid onset) of the following;
• Enlarged abdomen
• Rapid or shallow breathing
• Increase in heart rate
• Cold body temperature
• Unsuccessful attempts to vomit
• Excessive saliva
• Pale nose or gums
• Restlessness, pacing, and anxiety
• Shock
• Collapsing
A preventative surgery known as a Gastropexy can be done to minimise the risk of GDV.
During a Gastropexy surgery, your veterinarian will surgically 'tack' the stomach to the right side of the body wall. This will hold the stomach into place, preventing it from making the twist that results in GDV.
