Like any good cat, we’ve nonchalantly pushed 2023 off the shelf to make room for 2024. That task was exhausting so it’s time to take a cat nap.

All of us at GCVC want to thank our clients for trusting us with the care of their critters in 2023 and look forward to all the potential that 2024 has in store for us.

In observance of the New Years holiday, the office will be closed on January 1st. We will return to normal business hours on January 2nd. If you need emergency care during this closure please contact:

Today was AWESOME!!

We had a great turnout at our beef producer meeting and brought together ranchers from the Columbia Basin to Ritzville and from all along the Highway 2 corridor.

A big thanks to Dr Llewelyn from WSU Extension, Mark Holt from New Generation Supplements, Ian and TJ Newman from NN Ranch Supply, Dr Tessman and Curtiss Ickes from Elanco for making this event happen as well as Joann Eagle for feeding all of us.

We’re already planning for next year so stayed tune!

For all the beef producers out there, both large and not so large: Today is the deadline to RVSP for our upcoming meeting so we can get an accurate headcount for lunch. Don’t stress…you can still come if you don’t give us a heads up, but our caterer would appreciate knowing how many mouths she’ll need to feed.

We at GCVC are super excited for this opportunity to bring this event to our region! In addition to bringing together some great presenters, we’ve been working on bringing together some great door prizes too, including the latest design of GCVC hats. I know y’all always need a new hat! Also up for grabs: digital copies of the Western Beef Resource Committee Cattle Producer’s Handbook. This is an excellent resource for producers no matter what you operation or experience.

Come join us on Friday! Whether you have 5 head or 5000 I’m certain there will be something to learn from the presentations .

Happy Trails!

While I’m finishing my time in Southern California ☀️ 🌴 for the American Association of Equine Practitioners convention I hear the weather is more wintry back home. 🥶

Did you know that eating hay not only provides nutrition for a horse but also works as an internal furnace to help keep them warm when the temperature dips. That’s the reason it’s recommended to provide extra forage when the weather is cold and wet. For more tips on how to help your equine friend during the cold seasons check out this tip sheet from AAEP.

The smile on my face as I posed with Zippy the mini shows just how much fun my first day at the AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) convention has been! Today was hands-on lab day…first on colic care and then on ultrasound/radiograph guided joint injections. A big thanks to Drs Kasper and Mele for holding down the fort while I’m away learning the latest and greatest in horse care.

Just a quick reminder that our office will be closed Thursday and Friday of this week (23rd and 24th) for the Thanksgiving holiday. If you need a prescription refilled or to purchase pet food today is your last chance before the long holiday. In order to allow sufficient time to get prescriptions filled we'd appreciate all requests be placed by 2pm today.

It is no secret that I like horses...a lot. I, like many young girls, always wanted a horse. While I had one for a short while around age 11 I did not get to dive fully into being a horse-crazy gal until my late 20s. And it's been downhill from there! My family now has 7 horses total and my daughter (who is also horse-crazed) and I can be found out most every weekend riding.

My personal love of horses is what drives me to expand knowledge and skills in the realm of equine medicine and surgery. That's why I jumped at the opportunity to attend a day of continuing education lecture and lab centered around radiology and ultrasound of the equine neck and back.

Last Saturday I spent a day at McKinlay and Peters Equine Hospital getting out of my knowledge comfort zone and filling my brain with knowledge and experience. I even had the chance to do a cervical joint injection! In two weeks I'll be gaining even more knowledge and skill as I head to the American Association of Equine Practitioners 2023 national meeting. There I will be taking a lab on colic care as well as one on ultrasound guided joint injections. Woo Hoo!

These opportunities all tie into my USDA practice grant and my dream of expanding the large animal services provided by Grand Coulee Veterinary Clinic.

Happy Trails!

It’s a question of who is who today as we’ve put our Halloween “spirit” into dressing up like each other. Is that really Dr Poe, or is that Fran trying to pass as her. You can be the judge!

One of the features to our app that I am most excited about is the visit tracker.

This awesome addition allows you to get updates on your phone when your pet is staying with us for a procedure. We'll keep you up to date as to which stage your pet is, from being sedated for surgery through to when they are ready to go home.

Next time your pet is staying with us for a procedure you an register for the visit tracker one of two ways:
• Go to the "Check In/Pick Up" area of the app and just follow the directions,
• Scan the QR code that is at the end of your surgery intake form (and also below).

This is just another way the staff at Grand Coulee Veterinary Clinic are working to provide the best in veterinary care and service while also keeping our small town feel.

Happy Trails!

Today is the day! Our new app is live!

Over the last few months I have been working in the background to get GCVC set up with a client engagement app that will provide so many benefits it is mind blowing 🤯.

With our new app you can:

* chat directly with us
* request appointments
* request prescription refills
* follow your pet through their day with us

And that is just a few of the options!

Those clients with an email address in our system already received an invite this morning. For those of you who are not set up in our system yet wander on over to the app store of your choice and search for Grand Coulee Veterinary Clinic...there you'll find yet another way that our family is dedicated to helping yours.

Today was a momentous day: after 18 years of practice I watched a future colleague who has spent countless hours at Grand Coulee Vet Clinic gaining experience receive his white coat.

This ceremony bestows upon an incoming veterinary student the article of clothing synonymous with the medical profession. Through the miracle of modern technology I watched the White Coat Ceremony on YouTube while also coaching my children at the Grant County Fair.

Congratulations Jared Goetz, WSU College of Veterinary Medicine class of 2027!

It’s that time of year again: fair!!!

Once again the Poe kiddos have been working hard all year in preparation for the last two weeks of August. A lamb has been raised with love and dedication, a steer with the same, a breeding heifer got the chance to live in the lap of luxury all the while two horses and a rabbit continued their journey as 4-H projects.

While I am out of the office filling my role as fair mom/4-H leader/fair vet/rodeo vet I’m leaving y’all in good hands. Dr Soni Gilbert will be in the office August 14- 17 and Dr Leslie Kasper August 21-24. Dr Gilbert may be a new face to our office but not to our region as she’s done relief work for Brewster Veterinary Clinic in the past. Dr Mele will be in the office on August 28th…proof that it takes a village to serve a community!

If y’all get a chance come to the fair! Come see the fruits of the hard work our youth have put into their projects, both critters and crafts. Don’t forget the adults and their entries too! There’s so much to see at the Grant County and North Central Washington fairs.

Happy trails!

Stay tuned for updates regarding our official launch!

July is here
Harvest is near
The 4th…well, it’s just a day away
For the Poe family, you see
This holiday is dear
As it is the last family “Hooray!”
Soon the combines will start
There is wheat to be cut
Until the last kernel is stored
And then, when that’s done
A deep breathe they will take
Then the work, well it will begin once more.
For there is seeding to be done,
Next year’s crop to be sown
And that…it’s the life of a Poe
It’s a life we’d not trade, for it’s in our blood
A labor of love, over 5 generations grown.

*********************************************

The office will be closed Monday July 3rd and Tuesday July 4th. Dr Poe and her family will be enjoying some family time before the frantic pace of harvest and seeding set in. We’ll return to normal business hours on Wednesday, July 5th.

Emergency care during this closure can be found at:

Next week is horse show week!

The Washington State Junior Horse show and Washington Classic Open Horse Show are in Moses Lake and I’ll be there with kiddos and horses.

I’ll be out of the office Monday, June 19th, as well as June 21, 22 and 26. Dr Christa will be in on the 19th and Dr. Leslie the 22, 23, and 26. I will be in on Tuesday the 20th. I greatly appreciate my colleagues who help keep the train called GCVC rolling while I’m away doing family things.

There is some EXCITING news down here at Grand Coulee Veterinary Clinic! Very exciting indeed.

A few months ago I was told that the Hartline Assembly of God church was interviewing a pastoral candidate and that his wife was a veterinarian. One can imagine how that caught my attention. I think I about got whiplash as my head spun around to pay closer attention. We've been actively advertising for an additional veterinarian for around six months, but the candidate pool is small...especially when you're looking for a candidate that wants to live in our neck of the woods (or should I say sagebrush). Each time a client would inquire about my search I would reply "When the good Lord feels the time is right He will send one our way."

Well, He did. My prayers have been answered in so many ways! The Hartline AoG hired that pastor, Michael Mele, back in the spring and now his wife, Dr. Christa Mele, is joining our team. She's got two littles at home so for now she'll be in the office just a couple days per month. Our plan is for her to be in on Monday's to help with the post-weekend patient surge. A big bonus: she sees exotic patients such as reptiles. I know there are a few of you out there that will be excited by that information.

But I will stop jabbering on. Here's a little more information regarding Dr. Christa. If you want to swing by and say "hi!" her first day will be Monday, June 19th.

Happy Trails!
Dr. Poe

****************************************************************

Dr. Christa is a local of sorts as she is originally from Chelan. Prior to veterinary school she even spent a little time with Dr. Isenhart up at Brewster Veterinary Clinic. She graduated from the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine (Go Cougs!) in 2011. After graduation she spent time working in a mixed animal practice in Wyoming as well as a small animal practice in Colorado prior to moving to western Washington. She and Michael have two children. Dr. Christa enjoys cooking and being outside with the family, something that is much easier to do in our region versus the west side of the state.

Dr. Christa says she is eager to jump in and serve this community and that she loves many areas of veterinary medicine. She particularly enjoys geriatric care and chronic pain management. Dr. Christa also has additional training that helps her to integrate alternative care options when appropriate.

A reminder to all the large animal owners out there...yesterday marked the start of the FDA Guidance For Industry 263, the change in labeling that makes all antibiotics available by prescription only.

A few months ago I sent a newsletter regarding this change in medication availability. For those who were not on that mailing list I have added the GFI 263 article to our website: https://grandcouleevet.wpcomstaging.com/is-gfi-263-on-your-radar/

As always, if you have questions regarding this subject please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Our office is closed today, May 26th, as well as Monday, May 29th, so that our staff has time to attend the memorial and spend time with their families this holiday weekend. We’ll be back to normal hours on Tuesday, May 30th.

Dogs are born with 3 legs and a spare...that is what pretty much every veterinary student is told during their surgery lectures. But when a client is faced with the decision to have a dog's leg amputated that blithe comment often falls on deaf ears.

But dogs are amazing. And even more amazing are working dogs whose desire to do only what generations of breeding has honed their skills do to. Even if it means doing it on 3 legs better than most dogs could do with all 4.

Meet Sis. Seven weeks ago her left front leg had an unfortunate meeting with a horse hoof that left her with a severe fracture. The treatment options were laid out and her family chose amputation. And Sis has not looked back since. She finally got to do what she loves to do today, returning to her job of herding cows after her post-op break.

Go Sis go!
