CHICAGO — Google awarded grants this week to five Chicago-based, minority-founded tech companies as part of its Black Founders Fund and Latino Founders Fund programs.The five recipients — Certiverse, GuardianVets, Innovare, SAVVI AI and Speeko — garnered $150,000 each to support their startups. Representatives from the five startups attended a Tuesday press conference with Mayor Brandon Johnson to accept their checks from Google.

An FDA-approved, pharmaceutical-grade formulation of CBD could inhibit infections by SARS-CoV-2, after a study showed promise in human lung cells and in mice, UChicago Medicine says. Cannabidiol, or CBD, a product of the cannabis plant, showed a significant negative association with SARS-CoV-2 positive tests in a national sample of medical records of patients taking the drug for treating epilepsy, UChicago Medicine said in a statement. The study was published yesterday in Science Advances.

Cannabidiol, currently prescribed to epilepsy patients, should be looked at as a possible preventative or treatment for COVID-19, a new study recommends.

The holidays are traditionally a time for Americans to booze it up — but there’s a new intoxicant gaining favor. Industry insiders now call the day before Thanksgiving “Green Wednesday” due to the large amounts of cannabis purchased that day. It adds to the stretch of traditional days where shoppers prepare for the holidays — Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday — and its recent rise shows how consumption patterns around celebrations are starting to change. Cannabis sales that day are generally 40% higher than a typical Wednesday in November, according to research firm BDSA. Recreational ma*****na sales in Illinois surpassed $1 billion last month, blowing last year’s 12-month total sales of $669 million out of the water. October recorded over $123 million in sales of recreational pot. That pushes the year-to-date total for 2021 to $1.12 billion for recreational ma*****na sales alone, according to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Sales figures could be even higher if not for a Cook County court order blocking the issuance of licensed permits to 185 dispensaries that won the state’s licensing lottery, which ended in August. Legal battles have thus far kept the winning dispensaries in limbo. ANDERSONVILLE — A Florida-based cannabis company is buying Dispensary 33, ending a run of local ownership for Chicago’s only independent pot shop. Ayr Wellness announced Monday it has reached a deal to buy Dispensary 33’s two Chicago dispensaries for $55 million. The acquisition is part of Miami-based Ayr’s rapid expansion in Illinois, where recreational cannabis was legalized in 2020. Ayr, which operates cannabis grow facilities and dispensaries in multiple states, has also purchased two dispensaries in downstate Quincy and has plans to open a shop in Bloomington, the company said in a release. The Sun-Times first reported the news of Dispensary 33’s sale. The purchase of Dispensary 33 gives Ayr “presence in two of Chicago’s most desirable neighborhoods,” Andersonville and the West Loop, company CEO Jonathan Sandelman said in a statement. “In any market where we operate, our goal is to develop scale and meaningful presence,” Sandelman said. “We will continue to seek opportunities to expand in Illinois.”

The Bend, Oregon-based company has raised $350 million in funding, following a $200 million round seven months ago that valued Dutchie at $1.7 billion at the time. With the General Assembly likely to approve a ma*****na legalization bill next year, advocates for entrepreneurs of color are taking steps to make sure the state’s future pot industry is as diverse as possible. Two veteran lobbyists — former Del. Michael Arrington (D) and former Republican Party chairman John Kane — recently announced the formation of the Maryland Minority Cannabis Business Association. The association, an Annapolis-based non-profit, will “serve as the voice for minority businesses to guarantee opportunity, education, and equality for the communities devastated by the war on drugs,” the pair said in a press release.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s plan to shrink the downtown “exclusion zone” to a sliver and relax zoning requirements for cannabis businesses all over Chicago hit a roadblock Tuesday, stalling efforts to help minorities who have been shut out of the so-called “green rush.” The City Council had been poised to streamline the zoning process to attract an avalanche of “social equity” applicants — a designation created by the state to try to diversify the lily-white w**d industry. But aldermen Anthony Beale (9th) and Ray Lopez (15th), Lightfoot’s two most outspoken Council critics, used a parliamentary maneuver to postpone the vote until the next City Council meeting. Lightfoot promptly declared that she would call for that vote at Monday’s Council meeting, when she plans to present her 2022 budget and deliver her annual budget address.

A sweeping proposal unveiled Wednesday aims to lift the nationwide prohibition on pot and create new federal regulations as the number of states with some form of legal cannabis continues to grow. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and fellow Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) released the outline of the proposed Cannabis Administration & Opportunity Act to solicit input from the public. The “discussion draft” obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times most notably includes plans to remove ma*****na from the Controlled Substances Act, a move advocates and pot lovers have endorsed for years. The leaders of the National Organization for the Reform of Ma*****na Laws, an influential nonprofit that has pushed to ease pot laws for over a half-century, responded with a bold declaration: “The days of federal prohibition are numbered.”

Like Illinois’ legalization law, the measure looks to address the disproportionate harms of the drug war and to bolster equity in the overwhelmingly white w**d industry.
