And my dog became a better dog when I focused on the exact same things for her. By prioritizing food, sleep, and exercise for BOTH of us, our quality of life has improved drastically, and I can show up for my dog the way I want to💕
NUTRITION
The biggest part for me is that I physically and mentally feel SO much better: less GI issues and bloat, decreased brain fog, improved mood, and way more energy.
HOW to find a balance with food
—This is a very personal journey. The only advice I can give is to read everything you can and learn about nutrition for yourself, as well as listen to your body.
—For my dog: we feed high-quality, human-grade food with no fillers or preservatives
SLEEP
The way we feel while we are awake depends a lot on what happens while we are asleep. During REM sleep, we process emotions and memories from the day, resulting in decreased emotional reactivity, agitation, and impulsivity the following day. There a million other health benefits, but I find this one the most relevant to me and my reactive dog.
HOW to get better sleep
—Reduce screen time before bed (take the TV out of your room… it’s life-changing)
—Start lowlights when the sun goes down
—Establish a bedtime routine of things you enjoy
—For my dog: sleeping in her mostly covered crate with lots of comfy blankets 🤍
MOVEMENT
A clearer brain, improved heart health, better sleep and overall mood, a stronger body, more energy, reduces anxiety/stress, and so much more.
HOW to move daily
—View movement and exercise on the same playing field as brushing your teeth and showering until it becomes habitual (shoutout @ for this concept)
—Start low n slow (like a 10 min walk), then build up
—For my dog: 1-1.5 hours of physical and mental exercise— structured and sniff walks, tug, flirt pole, box feeding, TRAINING :)
PS: These are the things that have worked for me and things I’ve done a ton of personal research on. I invite you to do the same and learn about your own health and what works for you and your dog!
Ok go eat bomb food, move, and sleep tight love u BYE
