Take Roo, for example.
When Roo arrived for her board and train, she had one of the most severe cases of anxiety we’d ever seen. Despite her struggles, it was clear from the start that Roo is a sweet girl with so much love to give. Adopted by her family last fall, Roo seemed to have experienced some kind of trauma before her adoption. She faced significant challenges with separation anxiety, stress, and self-calming, leaving her family unsure of how to help.
Roo’s reactions to unfamiliar things were intense. She would panic, get tunnel vision, and it felt nearly impossible to calm her down. Her anxiety led her to cry, bark, be restless, and even destroy things when overwhelmed. She was also fearful of everything: unfamiliar people, dogs, noises, and objects. Whether inside or outside, her tail and body were constantly tucked in fear. Confronted by something scary, she would either hide, whine, bark, or charge at it. It even took us an hour to get her to take treats and let us pet her!
Our goal for Roo’s board and train was to teach her and her family how to use obedience as a tool for a better life. Through this process, we focused on building Roo’s confidence, enhancing her focus, and helping her regulate her emotions. As a result, Roo started to come out of her shell, letting her personality blossom.
We fell head over paws for Roo—how could you not? Helping her become her best self was an honor. It’s even more rewarding to see her and her family living their best life together—a life of Ukiyo 💜

A few weeks ago I found Lyra running on a busy street. No tags, collar, microchip, or anything. l saw her take shelter on a porch so I parked my car and walked over to her. When I found her she was shaking and curled up in a ball. Despite her being terrified, she had no issue cuddling up to me and trusting me to take her home. The next few days I relentlessly searched for her parents. I couldn’t believe such a sweet, loving girl didn’t have a home. I wanted to everything I could to get her back to her family.

After a few days of searching, I finally connected with her mom. It was then that I found out that someone in her household abandoned her in this neighborhood… left to fend for herself. While her mom was relieved I found her, she asked if I could keep her. She then told me that Lyra had a history of abuse… and she was scared about what would happen if Lyra came back to their home.

If you know me, you also know there’s no way in hell I would abandon a dog I could help. I honestly would keep her if I had the time and resources to do so. And I refused to place her in a shelter. So my happy medium? Fostering, training, rehabilitation, and making her adoptable af.

Over the last few weeks, I’m happy to say she has grown into an even more amazing dog than she already was. Not only have we worked through majority of her behavioral issues and past trauma - but she’s even more confident and happy! Lyra is a social butterfly bursting at the seams with love.
