Seasonal allergies in dogs

Did you know that dogs can have seasonal allergies just like people do? Pollens from grass, trees, and weeds can cause a variety of allergic reactions in our furry friends. My niece’s dog Kona, in the picture, had a severe allergic reaction to pine pollen. Some of the signs and symptoms your pup might exhibit with allergies may include some of the following:

Excessive scratching
Red irritated skin, hives seen on belly or under legs
Increased shedding or even loss of fur in places
Excessive licking especially the paws
Respiratory issues such as coughing, wheezing or sneezing
Itching or runny eyes
Swelling is face, ears, lips or eyelids
Ear infections

Allergies can lead to skin infections and hot spots if your dog scratches, bites or licks an area too much.

There are many treatments for allergies. Dogs can be given an anti- histamine such as Benadryl, but you should check with your veterinarian for specific medications and dosages. Never give your pup any decongestant or anything that contains Pseudoephedrine as it can be lethal to dogs. For severe reactions your veterinarian may prescribe steroids.
You can try other treatments such as bathing your pup with a dog shampoo specifically formulated to relieve itching and supporting a healthy coat. Supplements like fatty acids found in fish oil can help strengthen the coat and reduce itching. Grooming wipes can help remove excess pollen and allergens from their coat when they come inside.

If you suspect seasonal allergies don’t be afraid to talk to your veterinarian.

It’s great to be back! As many of you know George and I were away for 2 weeks on a road trip through Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York and back to Massachusetts. We saw so much but the best part of our trip was seeing our kids, Shawn, Heather and Andrea.
I want to share with you this dog treat recipe that Heather gave to me. I had a lot of fun making them today. I am not a baker and certainly not a cookie decorator but I think they came out pretty good and our pups Reesy and Rasta loved them.
The recipe is originally from Becky Hardin

PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREATS

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE TREATS:

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 egg
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup water
2 tablespoons honey

FOR THE FROSTING:

1/3 cup corn starch
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1 tablespoon honey
3-4 tablespoons hot water

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 350f
2. In a large bowl combine flour and egg. Add peanut butter, water and honey and mix until you have a stiff dough.
3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about 1/2 inch thick and use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes.
4. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden brown. Once done set aside to cool. ( if you have smaller cookies, use less time, otherwise the bottoms might burn)
5. To make frosting, combine the peanut butter and honey in a microwaveable bowl, and heat in microwave in 15 second increments, stirring in between, until melted.
6. Add melted peanut butter mixture to cornstarch and stir until just combined.
7. Slowly add water 1 tablespoon at a time until you have the consistency that you want. For a thinner frosting add more water.
8. Add frosting to a piping bag and design top of treats.
9. Store in airtight container

NOTE: some peanut butter brands use xylitol to cut sugar in their product. Xylitol is toxic to dogs! So check the ingredients

Some dogs are allergic to wheat. So rice flour or coconut flour can be used as a replacement.

I hope you have fun making these. I’m sure your pups will love them and you can always give them as gifts.

The dogs nose knows

When walking dogs one thing is for sure, dogs love to smell. I often wonder what could be so interesting what could they possibly be smelling? We will never completely know but here are some interesting facts. A dog has 100 million to 300 million olfactory receptors compared to that of human’s, we have about 6 million. It isn’t known for sure but it is estimated that dogs smell up to 100,000 times better than we do, that is amazing!
Dogs move their nostrils independently which explains why my dog Reesy cannot walk in a straight line, she is always going side to side along our route. Dogs exhale through slits in their nose as to not interfere with the scents they are inhaling. They have a Jacobson’s organ located at the base of the nasal passage that can interpret pheromones. Dogs can detect odors in parts per trillion. There sense of smell works best when there noses are wet.
We rely on our eyes and ears much more than our sense of smell. Dogs use their noses that is why dogs have been used for search and rescue, to sniff out explosives, drugs, cancer, low blood sugar and much more. Dogs can sense fear and anxiety in humans and determine age, s*x, and health of another dog. so next time you go for a walk with your dog allow them to stop and smell all the smells.
