I promise I'll keep watching for National Dog Day - but we all know cats would throw the bigger fit about not being recognized (and every day is a dog's day).

I agree with the reasons stated for not using an electric/invisible fence, but understand that "running free" should be natural for dogs. Certified instructors can help with the barrier training to help make it a positive experience - and beneficial for all.

Electric fences can seem to be an easy containment choice but still let your dog run free. Are they really all that? Find out now in the blog!

Medicating and cleaning ears and eyes are procedures that many pets will need at some point in their lives. While it is beneficial to start with a young pet or one that has never experienced these treatments before, you can work with a pet that has.

What is my dog telling me? No, REALLY?

What is my dog telling me? No, REALLY?

The Ten Myths of Canine Behavior:
Myth #9: My dog tried to bite me; I should contact a trainer.
While contacting a trainer can be beneficial for teaching basic behaviors like sitting, coming, and walking nicely on a leash, it may not always be the best first step for addressing behavior problems. Trainers vary in their expertise and not all hold certifications. Behavior issues can be complex, stemming from underlying medical conditions, emotional problems, or mental health issues. Therefore, it is advisable to start with a thorough examination by your veterinarian if your dog exhibits behavioral issues. In some cases, the next step might be to consult a veterinary behaviorist before considering a trainer.

The Ten Myths of Canine Behavior
Myth 8: Shock collars and prong collars don't hurt if you use them properly.
Some trainers advocate using "all the tools in your toolbox", suggesting that you need to "correct" your dog when they make mistakes to teach them what they did was wrong. While it is true that these tools can be effective in the right hands, they are not necessary. The potential for negative side effects often outweighs the benefits. Research has shown that dogs can learn just as quickly, if not faster, through positive reinforcement techniques rather than positive punishment and using aversive tools. Positive punishment involves adding something undesirable (like shock or pain) to stop a behavior.

Know the difference. Some states are starting to tighten laws on "emotional support" animals. Service animals are trained and working for a purpose. Therapy animals have no training, but typically go through certification to be around people/groups for particular reasons. Emotional support animals have their place, but now a person may/has to have professional mental health approval to be classified as such.

The Ten Myths of Canine Behavior
Myth #6: My dog is being dominant.
I must show him who is Alpha. Dominance in dogs is not a personality trait nor a motivation for behavior. The dominance theory in dogs has been debunked by scientists, and the term "alpha" is no longer used to describe behavior. If dogs are fighting or showing aggression, it is often due to social anxiety, not a desire to dominate. They act out because they do not feel safe.

Hmm...are cats of the same "mind"?

The Ten Myths of Canine Behavior
Myth #4: My dog is angry at me and just being spiteful.
Dogs do not possess the same level of critical thinking skills as humans. Dogs think in the moment, not about long-term consequence. Behaviors that we might interpret as anger or spite are often motivated by anxiety, frustration, and fear instead.

Are we too noisy for our "neighbors"?

Are we too noisy for our "neighbors"?

How does noise pollution affect the animals that make up 95% of all species on Earth?

Invertebrates play critical roles in the food web as pollinators and predators and as a food source for countless other animals. Yet, few scientists have studied how human-made noise affects their health.

Our researchers are working to fill this information gap by studying the effects of traffic noise on crickets. Their first study uncovered troubling findings: certain noise levels decreased the animals' survival rate into adulthood and affected their reproduction.

RECALL ALERT - Bausch + Lomb is voluntarily recalling Project Watson Eyelid Wipes for dogs due to risk of exposure to bacteria and fungi.

When the recalled dog eyelid wipes are opened and in use, bacteria and fungi, which are organisms found widely in the environment, soil, and water, can be introduced and grow in the container, posing a risk of serious infection to people with weakened immune systems.

This recall involves two lots of Project Watson Eyelid Wipes (45 count) for dogs, which are packaged in a small round container with a twist-on lid and blue and white labeling. “PROJECT WATSON” and “BAUSCH + LOMB” are printed on the label. One of two recalled lot numbers, A09050 and A10055, is printed on the bottom of the container. For more information, visit: https://bit.ly/3QA2GER

Felines getting some attention in areas of concern as well.

Millions of cats’ lives are cut short every year by a disease or illness that could possibly have been prevented. To address this shortfall in scientific knowledge, our foundation is proud to fund 12 new studies focused on some of the top health concerns affecting cats including cancer, FIP, chronic kidney disease and more.
