New Yorkers know there is only one way to get anywhere, QUICKLY! 🏃🏽♀️
Sometimes amidst the hustle and bustle, we loose the opportunity to see what makes New York City so beautiful🗽, so bold 🗣, and so proud. 👏🏻
SKoOP travels throughout many parts of New York City meeting all sorts of pet families in need of our support. One weekend, on our way to visit a patient, we saw a familiar building sign that read “Henry Street Settlement”.
The Settlement was established in 1893 by a triumphant social reformist and a health care advocate, named Lillian Ward. She and a few colleagues started the first visiting nurse service of New York City that is currently in operation today as .
The Henry Stree Settlement was originally created to help children, low-income black/brown and immigrant communities access essential health care and hygiene education. Lillian had a philosophy that everyone was entitled to accessible and essential healthcare no matter their economic status.
While the visiting nurse team delivered care to the sick, these buildings offered ESL classes, mental and woman’s health along with recreational activities like arts and music to the underserved community of LES. The Settlement later expanded to the adjacent buildings and several satellite facilities throughout New York City.
Today, this establishment serves as HSS executive and administrative offices who continue to organize support for New Yorkers and the surrounding community.
Skoop aspires to bring to veterinary medicine what Henry Street Settlement brought to it’s community, human medicine and nursing. We plan to highlight the power of a nurse’s touch and the impact it has on the longevity of a pet.
