“Fix” is a term that gets thrown around a bunch in the training world. Problem is, it’s super misleading and just plain wrong. You’ll hear trainer after trainer saying “That’s an easy fix”, or “I could fix that in a minute”, or “I fixed that problem”… but if we’re being logical and reality-based, that’s just obvious nonsense.

Whatever the environment allows/disallows, rewards/punishes, nurtures and cultivates *permanently* is the only thing which will affect any permanent change in a dog’s behavior.

If a trainer creates the temporary environment the dog exists in, then we know logically that whatever they achieved, if not continued in precisely the same fashion by the owners—forever—is anything but a “fix”.

So any trainer claiming they could or did “fix” a behavior is either ignorant to how reality works, or are simply playing fast and loose with definitions—sometimes innocently, but often in order to mislead.

Here’s what a trainer CAN do. They can train, proof, and pattern desired behavior and habits, and they can address undesirable behaviors and habits. They can then pass all this (sharing how they did what they did and what needs to be maintained) onto the owner, and proceed to coach and counsel the owner through the training process—and ensure the owners are keenly aware that this “fix” only remains fixed as long as the owners continue the work, as shown.

Any trainer who’s being honest, and actually thinking, realizes that no matter what “magic” they can create with a dog, that dog is absolutely not “fixed” in any kind of general sense. The dog is only “fixed” with the trainer (the environment the dog is currently inhabiting). The only real “fix” occurs when the environment the dog inhabits permanently—its home environment—changes how it interacts with the dog permanently.

This is simple and obvious stuff. Let’s hold each other to higher standards of clear communication, and honesty.

TLDR: ”fix” implies a permanent change, and if trainers are only a temporary aspect of the dog’s life, then trainers are logically unable to “fix” any dog. Only the permanent environment (the owners) can “fix” a dog by permanently changing how they live with a dog.

If you're trying to make your dog stop pulling on walks, a harness is NOT the answer! Think about it, harnesses are put on WORKING dogs. They are used for pulling something (sled dogs for example). Don't get me wrong, I love a harness paired with a seat belt in the car, but it will not stop the pulling on a leash. Hit me up for teaching your dog the right way to go on a walk!
