This is great news for the horses! Apple would not have been at an auction last December, headed to slaughter, if these rules were applied to her adoption from the BLM. But she is safe now, thanks to caring individuals.

Today we announced additional steps we're taking to secure the health and safety of wild horses and burros adopted through the Adoption Incentive Program. Read more here: http://go.usa.gov/xFDGA

The Adoption Incentive Program is a component of the existing Wild Horse and B***o Adoption Program that has increased the number of animals placed into private care. To date, the Adoption Incentive Program has helped place more than 8,250 wild horses and burros into adoptive homes.

The Wild Horse and B***o Adoption Program is a vital part of the BLM’s mission to manage and protect wild horses and burros as required by the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and B***os Act (Act) and other relevant laws and regulations. Since passage of the Act, the BLM has regularly gathered excess wild horses and burros from public lands to manage herd growth and address overpopulation. Current estimates suggest there are more than three times the number of wild horses and burros on public lands than is ecologically sustainable. Many of the oversized herds are negatively impacting native plant communities, wildlife, and important ecosystem functions.

Apple and Lacey are having a great day today. They are hoping to meet some new board members soon. Could one of those be you?

We are looking for 2 people that are dedicated to saving equines. You don’t have to ride or drive or train, just be willing to donate some time. We are looking for someone with skills in the writing department, to help with writing grants. We have multiple that we have researched that we qualify for, just need someone with some writing power!
And the next position is someone that helps organize events. If you like planning a party, let us know! You also must be willing to meet at least 4 times a year in person for a board meeting. We are located near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

May all the equines one day be free from being slaughtered, abused and mistreated.

We have some sad news to announce. Cooper was saved at an auction being sold by the pound in December. He has since enjoyed being a horse in the pasture, eating unlimited Alfalfa hay and enjoying his grain. He was found passed away in the pasture yesterday. He was loved beyond measure and knew it. If you could donate to his final expenses, we would greatly appreciate it. https://www.paypal.me/hearthorserescue

Imagine what they feel at a slaughter auction?
Or worse, the slaughter house. We can make a difference in their lives together. We save horses by taking in owner surrenders and NOT charging owners a fee, and by going to auctions to buy them before they go to the slaughter house. We don’t turn any animal away. But we can’t do it without you.

We offer multiple types of hay and feed, fresh water, a barn to get out of the elements, and acres to run on. All donations go directly to hay, feed, vet and farrier bills. We don’t spend donations on anything else. Donate if you can. Every dollar counts!

CAN HORSES SMELL FEAR?

A recent study suggests horses may be able to smell human fear when presented with their body odour.

Researchers at the University of Wrocław presented twenty-one Thoroughbred and Arab horses with body odour samples collected from humans who were either happy after watching a cartoon, or frightened after watching a horror film.

Before watching the films, the humans had spent a couple of days only washing in unperfumed soap and had not smoked, drunk alcohol, eaten strong-smelling food, or performed any strenuous exercise so that their scent would be as neutral as possible. Whilst watching the cartoon or horror films the human subjects had sterile pads in their armpits to collect their body odour.

The pads were then presented to the horses and their response to the smell of fear, happiness, or a control (without odour) was recorded.

The research team found that horses showed quite different behaviours in response to the odours. They lifted their heads significantly more frequently and for longer in response to the fear odour and the control, compared to the happiness odour.

Similarly, the horses tended to touch a familiar person that was present during the test more frequently and for longer in the fear condition compared to the happiness condition.

The researchers concluded that the presentation of human body odour from humans in different emotional states is enough to induce different behavioural responses in the horse.

You can read the study here:

Cooper, Apple and Lacey are enjoying the beautiful weather we have had recently. And a few carrots as a treat!

Cooper will be evaluated under saddle soon and then available for adoption! He is a very sweet, kind, easy to handle, branded Mustang. We are hopeful that he will be beginner friendly.

We plan on going to an auction soon and can use funds to save as many as possible. Please donate at

It’s farrier day! We had to push it out to 4 weeks due to work schedule, which I hate doing, but this is Miss Lacey getting her feet trimmed. We can already see her hoof growing back at the correct angle.

Cooper had an abscess when rescued him from auction. The abscess has grown out and left a tract that was just harboring nasty stuff, so we opened it up and cleaned it out today. You can see the event line from when the abscess happened. It’s amazing to see how their hooves tell a story of how they have been treated or any stress in the last 6-7 months. Since we rescued him he has not had a single lame day or any new abscess.

Apple is doing great! She is lunging, accepts face rubs but is still unsure of the halter. Follows me around willingly. Once we have her easy to halter and respectful of people on the ground while haltered, we will start getting her feet trimmed as well. Would rather gain her trust before we do that though. We could use some financial assistance with caring for these sweet souls. Each trim cost about $30. https://www.paypal.me/hearthorserescue

We had some round alfalfa bales delivered on Tuesday. The check was $175! So we have spent $235 so far this month, and that hay will only last a few weeks. We are hoping to get more delivered when the ground dries up next week.

If you can help us with a few dollars, we would really appreciate it.

Apple was gathered from the Antelope Valley HMA in September 2018. She was adopted October 2019, and titled in November 2020. So the people that adopted her owned her for 1 month before selling her at a slaughter auction. How incredibly sad for her. We will be looking at pictures of her round up to see if we can spot her in them. She would have been a year old. She is turning into a beautiful dun! We will upload some pictures as soon as we can of her.

Miss Apple came back from the trainers recently. She is not trained under saddle, but knows lunging and we are working on picking up feet. She is a mustang pony mare that we will be working on to continue her training before we place her up for adoption. We are also waiting to hear back from The BLM to see if she was sold illegally or is titled. She was not sold with a title and the auction has not been helpful in retrieving one if she ever had one. We do know that she is 4 years old and from Nevada. Past that, her history is a mystery.

Miss Apple was saved from a slaughter auction in December, where she was sold be the pound for meat. Our board members personally donated all funds to save her from the awful fate of being slaughtered.
We are currently building run-in shelters in multiple pens to give the horses a physical barrier from the elements, which you can see in the background.
To donate to save others from that horrible fate, https://www.paypal.me/hearthorserescue

Cooper and Lacey had trims today. Lacey had to check out what the grinder was. She said she approves of it since it gives her beautiful feet. Cooper had an abscess that had erupted when he was saved at auction. This is the hole growing out. We opened it up a bit so it could be flushed out. He has never taken a lame step while with us. He had extremely long toes and shoes that had been on for several months too long when we saved him. All that is behind him now as he receives a barefoot trim every 3 weeks or so. Lacey is available for adoption for $300.

Lacey got another bath today. It was a warm breezy day and she loved getting a massage and all the tangles slowly worked out. She had to check out all the fur that was brushed out of her. She moves so much better than she did when she came to the rescue. She is available for adoption! If you are interested in adopting her, please message us. Adoption fee is $300.

Cooper and Lacey are enjoying having unlimited hay and a bucket of grain each day. Lacey was in so much pain from improper trims and not having medication that helps her feel better before she arrived at Heart Horse Rescue. Cooper was at an auction and was so thin. He was bought for a mere $375. He has gained a lot of weight and will be evaluated by a trainer under saddle once he is approved to do so by a veterinarian. We are hopeful that will happen around the 1st of March at the rate he is gaining weight. It cost around $100 per month to care for Lacey and a little more for Cooper. Apple is at the trainers and was completely unhandled before we saved her from being slaughtered by buying her at auction. She is going to require at least 60 days of training. Can you help them and others like them by donating today? And please share this post, as it helps the animals just as much! Thanks for your kind words and donations. We are a 501c3 charity. Donations are tax deductible!

Cooper was bought at an auction in December for $375. He is around 18yrs old and has served humans for his whole life. Why someone thought he was worth more dead and wanted to extinguish the light in his eyes, I will never understand. So we care for him and help him get back to a proper weight, as that is rescuing.
Today he went to the vet and had his teeth worked on. He needed 1 pulled and a few sharp points smoothed out. We decided to give him a sheath cleaning as well. He also got weighed today. Does anyone know how much weight he has gained since his last vet appointment? We are going to give him more pelleted feed and have no doubt he will gain even more. If you can donate towards Coopers feed or veterinary bills, we would appreciate it. If you can’t, don’t worry! Sharing helps just as much!

We need the funds now to save them! The auction is in 3 hours! Pictures of the babies are in the comments. They will get a full vet check, deworming, microchipping and freeze branding. And then will be halter trained and taught good basic ground skills. We can’t save them without your support! Share and donate today! All donations are tax deductible. Cooper is enjoying his senior feed, with a few treats added in. He is such a sweet guy that he talks when he hears me scooping his feed. It’s hard to understand how he ended up at an auction, being bid on by someone who thought he was worth more dead. But that is in his past now. His future is bright and full of unlimited, healthy hay. And hopefully his own human to love him. He gets his teeth done this week and once he has gained a good amount of weight, he will undergo a training evaluation. If you can donate towards his care, we would greatly appreciate it.

Apple is excited to go to the trainers this week. She is a tattooed Mustang that appears to be wild. We want only the best training for our rescues. Lacey and Cooper got trimmed today. Cooper was a rockstar and was very quiet. It appears that he had a change in diet or stressful event about 6 months ago, which is when we suspect he had new shoes put on. Why do we think he had a stressful situation? He had laminitis rings in all 4 hooves at the same time. Before that not a single event ring. So this gives us an idea about his past.

So now we need the public to help us look for his old owners. He is 15-18 years old and was a chestnut or sorrel, as he has some colored hairs still. I will get some facial pictures tomorrow. Once weather clears up, I will give him a bath and look for paint markings. We believe he was well loved and taken care of up until 6 months ago. If you think you recognize him, please let us know. No shaming here. We just want to know more about his past.

Apple and Cooper auction receipt. I really thought I only paid .50 per pound for Apple. I started bidding at .35, and wrote down .50 at the end. Was irritated that the auction said it was .57 per pound. I know I did not go that high as I would not have. I would have recorded the purchase but they don’t allow pictures or video at auction.

We hope everyone had a good end of 2020! Everyone here is doing great! Cooper and Apple are almost done with 4 weeks of quarantine. Once done, Cooper will be let out on a 5 acre pasture and Apple will be going to the trainers for 60 days of training. Cooper will go once he has gained more weight. He will be going to the vets in a week for a weight re-check and teeth done. Lacey will be moved out of her stall soon and into her own pen. Just want her to have a shelter before we do that. Being able to move is important for horses, along with having a herd. Thank you for all your support! We look forward to this year and helping all those we can. We can’t do it without your support!
