Appreciate the support from the post this morning. Hank was a good dog who made a ton of hunters happy and even more so his best buddy and owner. Our thoughts are with you bud and I’m sorry it ended like this. Everyone if you could take a minute and say a little prayer for everyone who loved Hank it would be greatly appreciated.

Just a reminder the list has officially been closed to adding new trackers or drone pilots. We close it every year starting at the opening of the deer season. If you want to get added to the list next year please reach out to us after the season is over and before next year’s season starts. Good luck to everyone and looking forward to seeing all those recoveries!

Drone pilots please read this. I spoke with Shane last night about the TRAKR app and drone pilots being listed. They are requiring your rpic (p107) and verification that you have it. If you don’t have it do not apply for the TRAKR app. They are requiring a minimum of 20 hours of flight time with your drone and proof of such by showing your controller that has documented the hours. Again if you don’t have that many hours either get it done then apply or don’t apply at all. Lastly they are requiring you carry insurance on the drone. We didn’t discus the minimum coverage but it’s honestly not terribly expensive so just get it and feel safe knowing if anything would ever happen you are covered. Again do not apply until you have it.

I did talk with him about some situations like if your friend is the license holder who goes with you how does that work or what if it’s a new drone because you crashed your old drone and it shows no hours or very few. I’ll say it like it is here… it’s going to be a process of trial and error until we can get something truly lined out with individual situations going on a case by case basis. The goal here is to provide a quality service for the hunter so a few minimums have to be established. If you have questions or want to talk feel free to reach out to me and I can get you answers in your questions. This is Chris and my number is 765-438-0621 or you can message the page.

Hunters please please please hear us out. We are not bashing drones by this statement we are simply talking to the reality of early season hunting when the leaves are on. We have heard from multiple hunters in Kentucky who are upset with drone pilots for not finding their deer this past weekend. If the drone pilot lied to you and said they would find it knowing how limited they are then that’s one thing… but from what I’ve read and been told it’s more of a situation of unrealistic expectations. We have talked about this before but I think it’s probably needed to be said again with the issues that’s gone on in Kentucky.

Drones are great tools that absolutely have their place. I wouldn’t have one if that wasn’t the truth. However when the canopy is full I’m beyond limited in where I can search for your deer. It’ll need to be in something like a pasture, ag field, or crp or the chances of me finding it is almost 0. This will change quickly as the leaves start coming down the woods opens up and we can search basically everything. Until that does happen please know how limited the drones are! I said this before but I’ll say it again unless you are hunting a very small patch woods with nothing but fields anywhere around it or just trying to clear the crp type fields or ag fields to make sure it’s not laying in there the drone isn’t the best option. The reality of the situation is if you want your deer found and you can’t track it by following a blood trail the only real option is calling in a dog.

Again please don’t take this as bashing the drones as it’s the furthest thing from it. I’m making this post as someone who will be using a drone as well as dogs. It’s just the reality that Mother Nature makes it really really difficult to find your deer if it’s in the woods. Hopefully the drone pilot you call is honest enough to tell you that up front so there is no frustration involved because the limitations are stated up front with honesty but in case it’s not talked about or anything along those lines we are telling you here so you can understand when to call for a drone or when they aren’t a truly viable option. Let those leaves come down and I promise they will find a pile of deer and are a great tool to use… when the leaves are on call for a dog.

Good luck to all the Kentucky hunters hunting those velvet bucks! Don’t forget we have several trackers who are willing to help you out. Message them directly or contact the page and we can help get you in contact with a good tracker!

trackers you should have received an invite from me to 2 different group chats on whatsapp. it should be in the app if you are already on whatsapp and in txt if you weren't. If for some reason you didn't get either and you would like to be added please send me a txt and I'll send you the invite link directly to you so I know it actually goes through. This is for trackers only so hunters dont think you are missing out on anything this just lets us share tracks with the network faster and also to talk about tracking or situations that come up without flooding facebook with comments or constantly bouncing between group txt's through regular txt.

Just want to say congratulations to the legend, the dog father, Mr Al Sherman and of course Mr special himself ole Valentino on making the first recovery of the year for any tracker in the Indiana network! He might be up north in Wisconsin but we still sending them some love!

LET’S LIGHT THIS CANDLE!
Jason Lemke of the Appleton area provided Val with an opening day opportunity and Val capitalized.
Easy track for this veteran, but the perfect use of a tracking dog. The thickest Northwoods Bear cover, and no visible sign whatsoever.
Mr. Special took us right to him.
Congrats Jason and thanks for the opportunity.
Much thanks to Dean Muthig of Muckdog's Deer Recovery & Training Kennel LLC for the referral. 👍

We are getting asked a lot what the price is to have a drone come out. I’ll go ahead and add the dog on here as well just so we cover both sides of tracking. Please keep in mind every tracker sets their own rate and we don’t control any of that with the exception of asking new or inexperienced trackers work for free or for tips only until their dogs are more proven.

Drones tend to be more expensive to have come out. Makes since with the price of a thermal drone. Most pilots we’ve talked to are in the 300-400 range. Some might be lower (a couple might even be free depending on the situation) some are definitely higher. This generally covers 30 minutes from their location. After 30 the price tends to go up between a dollar a mile to 50 bucks every 30 minutes. A lot of the price is going to be dependent on the drone type, pilot experience, them having their remote pilot license (p107) and other factors involved.

Trackers using dogs tends to be lower in price. You’ll find trackers who are completely free to some working for tips only all the way up to around 250 to go 30 minutes from their location. Generally every 30 minutes of travel is 30-50 bucks more. A lot of this is dependent on experience, dogs overall performance, and other things that are figured in like gas, maintenance of the vehicles, or even vet bills that get spread out across the year of tracking.

A friendly reminder drones are not legal to use on public property so places like big oaks, Hoosier National, winimac, or mississenwa are going to be dog only. The explanation we’ve been given is it takes submitting a wavier to fly in these areas and DNR is not giving the waivers for deer recovery. Maybe that’ll change at some point but as of now that’s the guidance we have been given.

03/09/2024

Some important things to keep in mind when trying to decide who to call to come track for you (drone or dog). If it’s early season and the leaves are still completely on you have a pretty simple choice… I can’t see your deer through the leaves with my drone! Now if it’s in a field or open area like crp yep we can more than likely see it with the thermal but there isn’t much I can do to pe*****te the leaves. Also keep in mind the more sun is out the less I can see during the day. Higher temps can become an issue as well but that’s more on the battery life aspect. Lastly remember if it’s in the water or makes it under a blowdown it’ll be very hard to see the deer.

Quick stop to clarify that I am not against drones or wouldn’t use one as I am a dog tracker and a drone pilot. Just want to be clear that I’m not pushing drones over dogs or dogs over drones! We have both for you the hunter to pick from based on what your needs are but feel it’s important to help hunters decide which might be more effective.

Some general statements that get made about dogs vs drone that need cleared up. Dogs do not push the deer out like the common misconception has some hunters believe. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been on tracks and we literally walk right past bedded deer at less than 10 yards and neither the dog or deer care. If they do jump it’s almost always a quick small circle and they aren’t bothered at all. The biggest proof to this is how many times we have the deer show right back up after tracking (obviously when it’s not gonna die) to either be shot again or seen on trail camera. The number 1 reason they don’t show back up normally is after the hunter has brought a huge group in to search for the deer pushing everything in the woods out.

Another common misconception is that drones don’t affect the deer at all. Guys these drones aren’t quite small little drones. You can hear them from a long ways off. The deer are going to hear it, look at it, and in some cases take off and run. There isn’t a perfect system that makes it impossible for the deer to know we are looking at them and not bother them. It’s all about trying to mitigate these risks in a risk vs reward situation.

As the season goes on and the leaves come down it definitely becomes a very effective tool for recovery. Make no mistake it’s hard to hide from the thermal. Once the leaves are down the biggest thing to remember is flying in weather like rain is a no go for a lot of people. High winds are an issue as well. So remember on those rainy windy days that the drone might not be an option. Then as the same in early season if it’s a bright blue sky kind of day the drone will probably need to wait until it gets closer to dark.

When do dogs tend to struggle? Remember the worst thing for dogs is high winds, low moisture, and hot temps. Moisture is everything in a track. The number 1 thing a dog can’t track in is ice! That freezing rain that tends to have ice come down after really locks that scent up. Now once it melts it makes the track fantastic.

Unfortunately dogs can struggle in the time period drones do as well so you are really going to have to weigh the odds on which is more likely to find the deer. Early season I’d say the choice is pretty clear you need to have the dog come out unless you are in a small section with nothing but fields around for a long long ways. If it hasn’t rained in a while and it’s hot and windy if the leaves are off the drone might be the better option. During the day if it’s not over cast the dog will perform the best. I’d say generally if over cast or at night it’s a pretty fair fight between the two. Ice shuts dogs down just like a deer in water does a drone.

Long story short both can be very effective at finding your deer but knowing when to use one over the other is pivotal! We are here to help and can get you in contact with either a drone or dog tracker or help answer any questions you might have as we know the drone is a new method to find the deer and can be confusing to those not familiar with them.

Please also keep in mind drones can not fly on state land. You guys hunting public or hunt private and the deer goes into public will need a dog. Not our choice here this is mandated by the state and faa.

We have finished up the map and the tracker list. Please feel free to check out the new map for this year with the map having 4 categories of trackers. Black means they have both a dog and drone. Red is drone only. Blue is experienced dog. Yellow are new dogs/teams. Keep in mind we have trackers in every category who are willing to travel the entire state while others only travel short distances. If your closest tracker isn't available you can keep reaching out to trackers or you can send a request for the trackers who want to track for you to contact you instead of the other way around by using the TRAKR APP. You can also still message the page and we will send it out to our trackers to help get you in contact with someone who is available and wants to track the area you are located. Best of luck this year and if you have any questions feel free to message us!

Ok guys let’s continue with the youth hunters talk. Let’s talk about the .243 which would obviously mean private land hunting. The number 2 caliber we see with issues is the .243. Unlike the 350 we got a pretty solid idea what’s causing the problems and they tend to be one of two things. Varmint ammo is not deer ammo. Sure the lighter weight bullet is going to give it a flatter trajectory and in a lot of cases more accuracy on paper but it typically doesn’t expand very much and tends to blow through them so fast with both holes being so small there isn’t much blood to track if they do get out of sight. So remember when buying ammo you want to get a round designed for deer not for varmints. The second issue we see is even when using the right ammo the shot is going to far forward and ends up in the bone. With as small of a round as it is that bone can really stop it fast which means not much is going to happen beyond getting a broken leg. Pull it back 4-6 inches off that shoulder line then send it. I feel like this one is more of us parents self inducing the problem here by us telling them to put the crosshairs right behind the leg without explaining that doesn’t mean to put it right at that leg line and send it. The round can be absolutely devastating we just need to remember to have the correct ammo loaded and to not aim to far forward sending it into the leg.

31/08/2024

Friendly reminder to all the parents and grandparents out there as we keep talking youth season coming up. The #1 caliber for deer not recovered when a tracker comes out is the 350 legend. This isn’t just Indiana’s trackers that hate them it’s every state where they are legal. If you’re youth hunter is shooting the 350 legend make sure after the first shot they are ready as fast as they can be (yep we get it youth tend to struggle to reload and make accurate follow up shots… its the age and smaller size and we totally understand) to put another one in the deer if it doesn’t instantly go down. This is not a caliber that can handle shoulder shots or frontal shots or neck shots!!!! If I can give any advice here my 10 year old (at the time) shot a .450 bushmaster and was his favorite to shoot which also had much better ballistics and energy delivery. He was 4’6 76 pounds. It wasn’t over kill in the slightest. My only goal in saying this is to make the adults aware the 350 has a lot of holes in it so you can be ready if something does happen.

30/08/2024

As we get closer to season you’ll see 3 main things from us this year so hunters have every option possible to find the tracker they want to use.

1. You’ll see the traditional list broken down by experienced teams, new teams, and drones. This will also show who has both as well as everyone’s location and their number.

2. We will have an actual map of Indiana that allows you to see everyone’s location and what they are using (dog or drone or dog and drone) with the same kind of information like experience level and their contact number.

3. We will be using the TRAKR app to also get tracks. This app allows you to put the details of the shot and general location so trackers can come to you. You put the track info out there and trackers who want to track for you will send you a message and if you accept that tracker they will then and only then get your number to contact you. Let’s you filter out the ones you want from the ones you you would rather pass on for whatever reason you have.

4. You can still message the page and we will send the track out to the trackers. All these options should really help you make sure no one that needs help isn’t getting help.

A small reminder with youth season coming up most trackers will be completely free so we can make sure our youth hunters are able to recover their deer if it’s possible. Don’t chance something like pushing the deer when we have a lot of great trackers who will work with you to get the deer recovered for free!
