In an effort to help offset some of the costs associated with taking in/rescuing lost pets,
beginning today, October 21, 2024, the Central MS Turtle Rescue (CMTR ) is implementing a new policy regarding recovered non-native pets.

a. For each non-native animal bearing a current ID tag or microchip, an impound fee of $10, plus fuel reimbursement for transporting the animal from where it was found to CMTR at a rate of $.14/mile will be collected before said animal is released from CMTR.

b. For each animal not bearing a current ID tag or microchip, an impound fee of $25, plus fuel reimbursement for transporting the animal from where it was found to CMTR at a rate of $.14/mile will be collected before said animal is released from CMTR.

c. For each subsequent animal held by CMTR belonging the same family or individual, an additional $25 will be collected. (Eg. For an animal not bearing an ID tag or microchip: First offense, $25, second offense $50, third offense $75, etc.) plus fuel costs mentioned above.

d. For animals held over one week, an additional fee of $1/day will be assessed in addition to the fees listed above to offset the cost of feeding and housing said animal.

e. If the animal requires vet care while in the care of CMTR, full reimbursement of all vet and medical fees will be required before being released from CMTR.

f. Animals will ONLY be released to individuals/families who can provide proof of ownership of that animal.

PLEASE make sure your animals are properly secured so that they don't have to end up here. And it's always a good idea to have some type of identification on your pet, such as an ID tag and/or microchip.

Every Halloween, we work on spreading reptile awareness by letting our local community meet our reptiles! Throughout the night, everyone uses hand sanitizer, takes candy, then asks us questions about them! We love doing this and it helps end the stigma against reptiles!

Happy Halloween everyone!!!

House of Pancakes is looking for another foster family - and quick!

Considering reptile ownership but not ready to commit? Or would you just like to help beardies on their journey to their forever homes? Become a foster!

We provide a 36x18x18 enclosure, lighting, timers, hides/decor, bowl, calcium/multivitamin supplement, thermometer, tongs for handling bugs, and disposable floor liners. The only thing we ask you provide is food and love.

Beardies enjoy turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, escarole, arugula, bok choy, squash, zucchini, pumpkin, bell pepper, string beans, carrots, sweet potato and many other common greens/veggies. You can expect to pay around $5/week on their food. They should get live bugs once a week (superworms, mealworms, dubia roaches, hornworms, etc). Promise the bugs aren’t as bad as they sound!

Fosters typically stay in the home 4-6 weeks. We will ask for regular updates (photos are awesome too!). We ask fosters are local to Poughkeepsie, NY.. Hyde Park, Pleasant Valley, Wappingers, Fishkill, Beacon, Lagrangeville, Poughquag, Highland, New Paltz, etc.

If interested please fill out the adoption app & include a note that it’s for fostering. No reptile experience needed!

Yesterday, Sunny went to the vet. We learned that Sunny has a nodular growth on the right side of his liver and honey comb like growths on his liver.

Sunny was abandoned at a big chain pet store dumpster by his owner. A lovely employee found him and knew he needed help. Now he needs our help more than ever.

Ultrasounds can only show SO much. Sunny needs explorative surgery to figure out what is actually going on inside of him.

We NEED donations more than ever to help Sunny. If you’d like to help Sunny get his surgery and help us pay off vet bills, please donate by selecting your preferred platform (Venmo, Paypal, Cash-app, or Gofundme) here: https://linktr.ee/asheddingchance

Too true :c

If you choose to rescue animals, I am going to give you some sound advice - Grow thick skin and don't care what people think of you. I have known people to lose the battle with their minds. Compassion fatigue is real, but nothing is worth your life. No pet. No rescue. No person's opinion. Nothing.

In rescue, that person that tells you what an angel you are and how wonderful you are every time you pick up a stray pet thrown at their door will also be the first person who tells people how your organization is worthless when you don't have space to pick up the 30th pet thrown off on their property. It's ok.

In rescue, the adopter that leaves you the five star review about how wonderful everyone has been will change that review quick when they return the pet even though you have spent hours trying to keep it in their home. One star reviews are ok.

In rescue, your friend will be your friend until you deny their application for a pet because they are a great friend but a terrible pet owner. That's ok too.

In rescue, you will answer 143 calls in a day (yesterday to be exact). But if you miss 6 calls in a row while you are in the shower, you will be the one who "never answers their phone". It's ok.

In rescue, other rescuers and random trolls will judge everything you do but never have time to pitch in a hand to help when they see something needing more attention. They will, however, have lots of time to talk about how they’d do it better while they harass and judge you. It will be ok.

In rescue, you will have to involve animal control and the police department sometimes. The people who you take pets from will hate you - and I mean REALLY hate you. Trust me, it's ok.

In rescue, pets will be put down and pets will die at the hands of abusers. We can't save them all - and that's ok. We save the ones that we can and pray for peace for the ones we can't.

🐍🐸🐢REMINDER!!!! We are not accepting ANY rescues at this time!🦖🐊🦎

Dear Rescue Fam,

With a heavy heart, we want to inform you that our rescue will be pausing the intake of new animals for the next 4-6 months due to ongoing medical conditions affecting our team. This decision allows us to focus on providing the best care for the animals currently in our facility.

Rest assured, all animals in our care will continue to receive the love and attention they deserve. We are committed to rehoming them as needed, ensuring they find safe and loving forever homes.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support during this time. We appreciate your compassion for the animals and look forward to resuming normal operations soon.

Much Love,

The Shedding Chance Team 💚🐢

This is truly an epidemic. Do your research, check various resources, chat with someone who owns the animal you want, look at vets near you, ask people which vet they use, look at the proper equipment, etc. Do anything to support the life of the friend YOU should have full responsibility for.

Today we had calls to take guinea pigs, 2 calls for adult cats, 3 kitten calls, and 2 dogs calls. All of them were didn't have enough time or a sudden crazy allergy
Take care of your animals people just stop trying to dump them at shelters we are all tired and just because you don't think you have time and somebody develops a sudden allergy your animal is disposable and faces death.
It's getting absolutely ridiculous!

Cricket is a rescue of ours from a chain pet store. He was sent for euthanasia due to neurological challenges. A worker at the store recognized that his husbandry was off and that he probably just has MBD. We took Cricket in with their help and now Cricket is doing well with our foster, gaining weight each week, and looking like he can be adopted out soon!

Cricket will always be a special needs dragon due to him not getting the proper husbandry since he was a baby dragon. But Cricket has another chance at life thanks to the worker who advocated for him!
