Many cat owners allow their pets to roam freely outdoors, under the misguided belief that a belled collar will prevent the cat from killing birds and other wildlife. Unfortunately, a bell won’t protect any animal from your cat. Wild animals have no way to instinctively associate jingly sounds with danger, and the noise can even spark a bird’s curiosity, making it more likely to stay where it is and look for the source of the sound. Many cats are also capable of hunting so stealthily that they don’t make a sound at all.

Please do the right thing and keep your cats inside instead of hoping that a belled collar will protect your wild neighbors.

Say hello to our latest rescue -- Sisu the kitty!!
But first -- we apologize for our recent hiatus! The creator of this page has been working VERY hard; she acquired a nearly-full-time job on top of her rescuing responsibilities, as well as her artistic sales and commissions, and she has also been going through a difficult time trying to become more independent from her relationship and doing extensive self-improvement through various meditation, introspection, and therapeutic techniques, so things have been extremely busy!!!!!! The wildlife rehabbing side of things should resume come May (that's the plan, at least), once all our permits have been successfully updated 😉
Anyhoo, Sisu comes from an Amish farm in Upstate NY. She was part of a litter of feral kittens taking up residence in the barn. The rest of the cats are extremely antisocial, nearly impossible to catch, and VERY wild, as well as perfectly content living among the cows and other farm animals in the barn...but Sisu was constantly being handled by the Amish children, and so she developed quite an affinity for people!!
She also HATES the cold -- and it has been getting into the negatives at night over here recently 🥶🥶🥶 so she kept sneaking into the house on the Amish property, and the lady of the household was getting annoyed with having to chase her back out. She's such a friendly kitty, though, and she would spend so much time outside in the cold, busy meowing at the door to get into the house, instead of keeping warm in the barn, that we became quite worried for her. We came upon this situation while helping to get the Amish farm's work dog, Toby, treated for mange (we covered the vet bills and the transportation -- we will post more about Toby next -- and all donations are extremely appreciated, as this came entirely out of our own personal income at the time!).
So, we took Sisu in as a temporary rescue, and managed to find her a wonderful, warm, loving home in one of our beloved companions, Johnny!! Here are a few pictures of her from the first day we took her in (first pic) as she sits on the shoulder of one of our volunteers, followed by her in her official home with her brand new collar that Johnny got for her 🥰 We even got to pick out her name, and we visit with her often!

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

You’ve likely seen memes and blogs suggesting that you help birds build their nests by leaving materials like yarn, string, human hair, and pet hair outside. Please, please don’t do this!

Wild birds don’t need help to find nesting materials. They’re everywhere and birds instinctively know where to look for them! They may become confused and accept yarn and other materials given by humans, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Long strands of yarn, string, or human hair often become wrapped around the legs or wings of birds, causing them to eventually lose circulation or the ability to fly. Hatchlings are especially susceptible to death when they become entangled in these “gifts” in the nest, and as they grow, the material will become tighter until it amputates a limb. Yikes!

Pet hair, yarn, string, and human hair are also full of materials that can be safe for us but toxic for birds, which are much more sensitive. The fragrance in your shampoo, dye in your yarn, and flea products in your pet’s fur are all quite dangerous to birds.

The best nesting materials that you can give birds are the ones that are already outside! Leaving twigs, leaves, grass clippings, and native plants in your yard can help to create a natural habitat where birds can thrive. Leave the litter out of your yard and dispose of your waste responsibly.

**Although...as much as we love our parrots -- we also KNOW the lil sh*ts too well to be totally comfortable allowing them around a baby with a beak THAT size 😅😅😅😅😅😅
All that baby has to do is move too fast towards the bird, and if the bird is in a mood, that could end pretty damn badly -- especially with a kid that small and a beak that big 😳
Bird bites are *not a joke,* folx.... 😅

My daughter did this for me .
So, the x-rays showed fluid in and around her lungs, around her heart and in her abdomen. Medication may have eased it, but not cured it and out of the oxygen she got tired fast. So as hard a decision as it was it wasn't fair to her to not make the decision. She will of course be privately cremated and her ashes returned home. Thanks to everyone for their kind words and love. I don't have a final bill for her yet, but I know it's going to use a chunk of funds . Obviously any donations would be greatly appreciated and in time I will post the artwork for sale too.
Obviously we didn't expect her life to be this short, but I know how many hearts she touched in such a short time. I can't believe she is gone .😭😭😭😭😭💔🌈 ❤️ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ❤️

- Between last night and the night before that, I have now been up for nearly 48 hours, and have (mostly 😅) successfully live-trapped TWELVE field mice in my BEDROOM 😂 Two of them pulled off some WICKED acrobatic daredevil stunts to manage to get away from me during cage transfer, while I was trying to work out the best method 😆 Third time was a charm, though! And who knows, maybe I re-caught the same first two over again (doubtful 😂).
These lil guys are *daring* as ever! Last night, while TRYING to sleep, kept hearing rustling -- finally turned on my light, and two feet in front of my face, THREE MICE are just staring back at me from the low shelf on the floor, totally unfazed, like, "yeah? Sup??" 😆

Liiiiiike, lil homies, I totally do NOT mind you camping out with me for the winter -- I GET it, man, it's COLD out there!! -- but I really don't want my house burning down because I can here you in the heating grates under my bed likely chewing up our already-sketchy-enough electrical system 😬😬😬 so y'all are gonna have to take up residence in a spare cage. Consider it free room and board for the winter. Come spring, you guys gotta go find your place among the wild though 😅

Please remember to be humane and live trap whenever possible (be sure to check your traps DAILY!)!! These lil critters are only trying to keep warm and stay fed, just like the rest of us, and other traps (poisons, glue traps, etc) are just soooo unbelievably inhumane 🥺 A proper-quality snap-trap is your best bet if you absolutely refuse to live-trap for whatever reason, because at least that's an instant death (MOST of the time).

Pic of the most recent culprit before we put him up with his buddies for the winter 💕

- "The animal kingdom was suffering from the cold, everything was freezing over. The animals would freeze to death if nothing was done so they came together and decided they should ask their creator in the heavens to help.

The rainbow crow was the most beautiful bird in the entire animal kingdom. He even had the most beautiful singing voice. He was chosen to fly to the heavens because of his strength, endurance, and intelligence. The trip was long and rough as the heavens were extremely far away.

Upon reaching the heavens and finding the creator, the rainbow crow could not get the creator's attention. So he sang his most beautiful melody and drew the attention of the creator. The rainbow crow begged for the creator to do something to help the animals, and the creator gave the rainbow crow a branch with the fire of the sun on it.

The rainbow crow raced back to the animal kingdom as fast as he could so none of the animals would freeze to death. However as he decended the fire burned brighter, charring his gorgeous feathers. Despite this, he flew as fast as he could. Even as he could feel his throat becoming hoarse from the smoke, he flew.

The rainbow crow had brought fire to the animals and saved them all from the frost. He was blackened from the flames but retained his rainbow sheen. He could no longer sing, with his throat burned he could only muster a hoarse caw.

The creator recognized the rainbow crow's good deeds and told him, 'The fire has made your flesh taste of smoke, your feathers an undesirable black, and your voice a harsh cry. Do not be saddened, as this means you'll never be hunted for food or feather - nor caged to sing for man. You'll forever be free and none shall forget your deeds.'"

- government is doing all it can to silence us all when it comes to .... DON'T LET THEM SILENCE US. What they've done is SO WRONG on so many levels.....

Update from Matt below. If you can donate anything to help, the link is below. https://store.mattmathews.com/product/JusticeForDonovanDonationForChange/387

I’ve spoken with my attorney this morning and he will begin work on this tomorrow morning. The immediate goal is to find out what has happened with Donovan and to hold these people accountable. The end goal is changing the laws in this state so that this does not happen to someone else. However, that’s going to take manpower and funding. I’ve made t-shirts available and my team has built this page for any donations. All donations and t-shirt proceeds will go toward the process of making these changes in this state. Any remaining will be donated to The Opossum's Pouch Sanctuary, Rescue and Rehabilitation

My sweet boy's bed is empty tonight and my heart is still shattered, I’m broken, I’m angry!
I know I broke a law by keeping Donovan with me knowing that it was illegal but I also know that I’m human. A compassionate, love human especially when it comes to animals. I also know that I couldn’t NOT step up to the plate, learn everything I could and work with some of the country’s best opossum rehabbers in the country so that I could ensure Donovan the most incredible life he could ever want…. I did just that! The fact that he is now 4 years old should be a testimony to just how loved and cared for he was.
I’m not asking for you to bring Donovan home to me, I get it… a law is a law. Although, I was under the impression that laws are here to help and keep people safe, not harm the ones being cared for. I only ask that you transport him to The Opossum's Pouch Sanctuary, Rescue and Rehabilitation in South Carolina where they are fully licensed and have known Donovan since he was a small orphan.

Please do the right thing!

IF YOU WANT TO HELP:

Please don’t stop calling Marianne Hudson (Donovan is currently in her custody and they will not respond or call me)

AND the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division. Post on their wall, Instagram is and email [email protected]

- This is an amazingly rare and incredible case. Poor little woodchuck, though....As sad as it is, his sacrifice is what likely saved those ten babies. If that woodchuck didn't have some kind of neurological problem, he probably would have run away from the babies, but because he couldn't do that, they used him as a warm safety taxi after they lost mama. Poor guy...we certainly wish he could have been saved, too. But we're thankful the babies get another chance, at least 💕

- Rosie is such a sweet little charmer with a comical attitude to boot 😆🥰
We really don't understand how her Furever Homes keep on falling through (at no fault of her own, nor ours), but the second one recently informed us that sudden complications have now made her unable to take Rosie home. So, here she is, still available to find a place to be loved and pampered, and her special hooman to bond with! She's a beautiful lil mosaic, approximately 6 months old now. Feel free to send us a message with any inquiries. Local to South Central Upstate NY, Broome County.
