Feral cats are often misunderstood, but not with Chris and her husband. They seem to be cat magnets when seemingly feral cats show up at their doorstep and before long are members of their family. Just goes to show what a little love and attention can do to transform a cat from feral into a loving house cat. Here's what Chris recently wrote us during a difficult period in her life...

I don’t know what I would do without my Marin Friends of Ferals kitties. I really don’t. They have provided me with infinite comfort during some very rough months. They give me joy every single day. They give me laughter. They make me stick to a routine that has kept me on emotionally solid footing. Some people think feral cats are a problem. No, honey—they’re the solution. Each cat that slinks into the bushes has its distinct personality and irreplaceable soul. People, wake up!

Cookie Dough and Linda Celeste Wild are too gentle to force themselves on anyone. I received a privilege when they chose to share their days with me. I gaze at them with pure love, forever.

Welcome back to San Quentin Saturday! Each Saturday, we share stories from our Pen Pals program at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, which matches specially-selected inmates who work in the center's firehouse with shelter dogs in need of a little extra TLC. ❤

Did you know that the Pen Pals program has a kitty from our Working Cats program here at Marin Humane? We love it when our programs collide! Our Working Cats program gives second chances to outdoor, under-socialized cats who aren’t able to be adopted as typical pets. These kitties often thrive as mousers and offer eco-friendly rodent control - which is exactly what The Warden is doing at San Quentin.

The Warden earned his name for obvious reasons: he's in charge! The Warden doesn't run from anything, be it a dog, a handler, a guard, or anything else. If you live at the firehouse and don't respect The Warden's boundaries, you just might end up with his signature on your hand in the form of a scratch. Luckily, everyone treats The Warden with the utmost respect and everyone lives in harmony - more or less!

Occasionally, The Warden will torment a new canine arrival by jumping over a handler's door and taunting the dog from atop a dresser. When a dog named Willow recently arrived, after some initial sizing-up, The Warden and Willow started to bond. Soon, The Warden and Willow would cuddle up at night and sleep in Willow's handler's bed! It was a tight squeeze but they made it work. The Warden and Willow would even play together in the play yard. It just goes to show, The Warden CAN be won over!

We'd like to say thank you to the inmates for supporting a more eco-friendly form of rodent control with The Warden! You can learn more about our Working Cats program, run in conjunction with our partners at Marin Friends of Ferals, here: https://marinhumane.org/adopt/working-cat-program/

I'm excited to reveal this poster refresh for the film!

Most films have 3-4 different versions and I have been remiss in not doing this one. This one honors the tremendous work of Joy Smith of FieldHaven Feline Center, who during the Camp Fire rescued more cats than anyone else (we're not counting the iguana, lol) —HUNDREDS!— and housed them for more than 7 months.

Once the new poster is launched on Etsy, 100% of the proceeds will be going to FHAST (FieldHaven Animal Support Team) to the end of August!

P.S. FieldHaven is still streaming the film as a benefit!

Mister is seeking his fur-ever home! He is not feral, just shy and scared. He was most likely dumped and left to roam the streets on his own. Currently, in his foster home, he has no desire to go outside. Ideally, he would like a quiet home where he can blossom as an indoor kitty. He is approx 2 years old, neutered, and health checked. If you are interested in this great cat, please contact Sara at 415-717-9732

"Moksha McClure has offered to donate her closed pet boarding facility to a nonprofit, who wants to operate the facility. Steve (co-founder of AOL) & Jean Case, own the land. Moksha requests that they allow a nonprofit to utilize these facilities via an affordable long term lease. Click on the petition to learn more. Please share. There is a great need for this and it will save lives!

Moksha is donating the facility that she built and operated for 20+ years. It is still in good condition. IF It is not leased, the result will be terrible for animals. A fine not-for-profit is ready to operate the facility and save animals.

Warm Aloha,

This is Leo. He’s a chill dude that likes to hang out with his favorite peeps in a quiet home. Like most adolescents, he likes things on his timetable. Leo likes to sleep in, have a good long stretch when he wakes up, then cruises around the house to see what’s up. He’s a big fan of being brushed and playing with wand toys. When he’s good and tuckered, it’s time to zonk out on a warm lap. Let’s just say Leo is living his best life in foster care.

We don’t know much about Leo’s former life. It takes him a little bit of time to warm up but when he does he’s a lovable, affectionate, cuddly bundle of happiness. As you can imagine, as a former feral he’s still a little insecure. Loud noises and quick movements startle him. Otherwise, he’s a perfectly normal cat you would never guess was once feral.

Leo is ready to find his forever home. If you want to meet him, contact us at 415-246-9162 about arranging a meet and greet. But be forewarned….. You’re going to fall in love.

When we relocate ferals from their previous outdoor home, because it's no longer available to them, we normally place them with new guardians at least 5 miles away. But after reading this article, I believe we may have to rethink that! Just another example of how incredible cats are:

https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/cat-walks-for-a-year-across-france-back-to-her-old-home/

A cat traveled 280 miles across France to her old home before being reunited with stunned owners—a whopping 13 months later.

Another love letter from satisfied guardians who adopted 2 of our feral cats:

Peeka and Boo are still doing awesome. We love them so much! Since Peeka and Boo have joined our family - we have not had a single rat eat our tomatoes! We were battling the rats for three seasons - but they’re long gone thanks to these awesome hunters.
