CAUTION DIRTY TOPIC AHEAD

No but really, substrate matters! I use a mix of coco coir, top soil, and sphagnum moss. Miss holds moisture well to offer humidity, cococoir and topsoil make for good burrows. Use caution when buying Top Soil that it does not have fertilizer in it.

Meet Crush! Crush is an unknowned age Sulcata Tortoise. Crush was bought from my favorite pet store Gecko World Austin. I want to stress this so much that Crush is not the quality that is typically sold by Gecko World. He was brought in to the store as an owner surrender and they worked with me to get him into a good home. Crush’s owner is to blame for his bad condition due to lack of education. Crush came to me suffering from severe pyramiding, MBD (metabolic bone disease), and shell rot. He has quickly healed up and is doing so much better after a few weeks with us. Thank you Gecko World Austin for making sure this boy got into healing hands.

🛑A tortoise will never thrive with out UVB🛑Tortoises must receive 8-12 hours of UVB exposure per day in order for them to properly absorb calcium! Wether that be outside or provided by a UVB long bulb in their tortoise table that covers Atleast 3/4 of the enclosure. also tortoises should have a heat lamp that makes a basking spot that can reach up to 100 degrees. I put slate tiles in my tables to help reach that temperature and to help with beak/ toe maintenance.

Say hi to another resident at Esio Trot reptile rescue! This is Oran! Oran is an adult male Greek Tortoise. I bought Oran from a reptile expo as a long term captive. He’s a shy boy, but man does he love to eat fresh greens and roam the yard!

Did you know your tortoise MUST have a a calcium supplement! If they aren’t getting outdoor grazing, they would probably benefit from a multivitamin too. For my tortoises, they have constant access to a cuttlebone at all times as well as having calcium sprinkled on their food. I alternate my calciums by with D3 or without D3 every feeding.

Let’s meet some tortoises! This is Tortie, he’s an 8 year old male Russian tortoise. Tortie was my first tortoise and he’s just such a sweet boy. He is a pretty lazy tortoise who spends most of his day burrowing or eating.

Let’s talk feeding your tortoise! One of the most common problems I see people have with tortoises is not feeding them right. the tortoises diet is bland, filled by mainly leafy greens.

Retail pet shops will tell you that spinach is safe for your tortoise when it isn’t! Spinach contains Oxalic Acid prevents calcium absorption and creates kidney stones. I feed my tortoises a mix of radicchio, arugula, romaine, red lettuce, and occasionally kale.

Never do tortoises in my care get fruit due to the high sugar content. If you want to give a tortoise a treat, a hibiscus flower is always a good go to!
