As we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, we are reflecting on how food justice IS social justice.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

At the Food Literacy Project, we aim to answer this question by working to cultivate justice and abundance for every person in our community through food, farming, and the land.

🌟 Throwback Thursday🌟

This week, we’re taking it back to 2006 with Carol "Cauliflower" in action! 🥦📚 Here she is helping kids create a colorful poster all about the parts of plants—roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.🌱

Moments like these remind us of our deep roots (pun intended!) in educating and inspiring young minds about food, farming, and the natural world. 🌎💚

All About Turnips + A Classic FLP Recipe!

Turnips are a root veggie superstar! 🥬💜 They’re part of the mustard family, related to radishes and arugula. Both the white-purple root and the leafy greens are edible, making them a two-for-one ingredient!

Why we love turnips:
• Best in fall (mature) & spring (small, sweet).
• Perfect for soups, mashing, or roasting.
• Affordable and hardy – a winter kitchen staple!

Curious about how to make the most of turnips? Check out our FLP classic recipe for Roots and Leaves Sauté – a simple, flavorful dish that uses the whole turnip! 🌱

🌽 to 2019 with Chef Bruce Ucán!

We’re taking it back to 2019 when Chef Bruce Ucán, co-owner of Louisville’s The Mayan Cafe, brought his culinary expertise straight to the farm! 🌾 He showed a group of kids how to make tortillas al mano (handmade tortillas), a skill as delicious as it is fun to learn.

Bruce and his partner Anne Shadle (also pictured) have long supported local food systems, frequenting farmers markets and championing fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. We’re so grateful for chefs like Bruce who share their passion and creativity with our community!

Working with local chefs to teach and cook on the farm is one of our favorite ways to celebrate food, culture, and connection.🍴
