🌟 YCAP Crew Spotlight: Audrey “Appletree” 🌟

Meet Audrey “Appletree,” one of the dedicated crew leaders this season! Audrey’s vibrant energy lights up the farm every day, making her an incredible role model for her peers. Whether she’s hard at work harvesting veggies or posing with uniquely shaped produce, Audrey’s creativity and positivity inspire everyone around her.

Audrey lives by the quote: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” It’s a perfect reflection of her belief that fresh food from the farm—while different from grocery store produce—is beautiful in its own, natural way.

✨ Fun Facts About Audrey:

🎨 She’s an incredibly talented artist and has been accepted to art school!

🌈 Her dream is to become an art teacher at Western Middle School for the Arts, the very school she attended.

🌾 She created an ashtray from clay she foraged on the farm—swipe to see some of her amazing artwork!

The YCAP program is so much more than farm work—it’s youth development in action, empowering young leaders like Audrey to achieve their dreams. Let’s take a moment to celebrate Audrey “Appletree” and everything she’s accomplished this season!

🌻✨ Just a gentle reminder to be kind to yourself this week. ✨🌻

These photos are from the Sunflower Affirmations project during Healing Week back in October. 🌼 It was a beautiful, humbling experience to take a moment, sit down, and reflect on kind words to say about ourselves. In a world filled with so much negativity, it’s so important to pause and affirm all the wonderful things that make you uniquely you. 💛

Self-love isn’t always easy, but it’s such a powerful practice. Today, take a moment to celebrate yourself. You deserve it. 🌞

🌦️🌻 Throwback Thursday Reflections 🌻🌦️

Although it’s been a rainy week, we believe the sun shines brightest after the storm.  Over the years, our farm has moved locations more than once, but we’re grateful to be exactly where we are now—farming, growing, and thriving on this land with our amazing community.

Through rain or shine, we’re reminded that every step of this journey is a gift, and we’re so thankful to have each of you with us. No matter what the forecast may look like in your life right now, we encourage you to take a moment to step outside, breathe deeply, and embrace your own sunset, whatever that may be.

🌿 How familiar are you with mustard greens? 🌿

We’ve got all the info on these flavorful greens, plus a recipe for Mustard Greens with Balsamic-Glazed Chickpeas (recipe credit to Dishing Up the Dirt). Fun fact: many of the mustard greens growing at the farm this season were volunteers from the spring! 💪 This versatile and hardy member of the brassica family has been adding some serious flavor to our harvests.

If you give this recipe a try, let us know how it turned out! And we’d love to hear from you—what vegetable should we feature next? 🍴🥬

🌱 Did you know that every week, the YCAP crew dives into “Real Talk”? Real Talk sessions are a time for reflection and growth, helping crew members think deeply about teamwork, leadership, and communication skills. Sometimes the questions focus on building team dynamics; other times, they’re all about personal growth and individual strengths.

It’s not just farm work happening out here—it’s self-work too! We’re so proud of the growth the YCAP crew has achieved this season, both on the farm and within themselves. 🌻

🎃 Happy Halloween from the Food Literacy Project!

Our staff and YCAP crew got into the spirit at Community Meal by dressing up for the occasion! Arabella “Amaranth,” Gabriella “Green Bean,” Celeste “Celery,” and Jenni “Perennial” showed up as the Three Sisters planting and sunshine, bringing the farm-to-costume concept to life—because what’s a successful symbiotic relationship without a little sunshine? 🌞

Jericho “Juniper” joined in as a witch, and Audrey “Appletree” brought some magic as a fairy! ✨

It was a blast to celebrate Halloween with our Field-to-Fork Club families, seeing the kids light up and everyone sharing their fall achievements together. Here’s to the joy, learning, and sweet memories we’re taking into the next season! 🍂🌽👻

Last week, we wrapped up a fantastic season of Field-to-Fork Club at the Backside Learning Center with a pizza celebration! Over the past few months, participants have learned so much, from following recipes to handling fresh ingredients. As we reflected on our time together, one student said, “I give the pizza 5 out of 6 stars!” Another student shared how she was most proud of following recipe steps because it makes her feel calm. Another student loved making dough because it was “messy and easy.”

When asked how Field-to-Fork Club made them feel, the answers were heartwarming: “feliz” and “excited.”

Together, they prepared pizzas for the BLC staff, the older students in Front Runners, and volunteers—a delicious end to a season of growth, learning, and community!

to October 2014! This Field-to-Fork Club participant is cheesin’ as he grates cheddar cheese for a recipe. 🧀🍴 Cooking brings joy to life, and that’s why food is at the heart of so much of our programming at Field-to-Fork Club and on the farm. Food not only nourishes our bodies, but it also connects us—creating space for sharing knowledge, stories, and experiences. Whether it’s cooking, harvesting, or simply sharing a meal, food brings us together.

At a recent Field-to-Fork Club, students explored self-care through a fun Wellbeing Web activity! They filled in blank hearts with ways they care for their bodies, minds, and hearts, sharing their favorite fruits and veggies, ways to move, and things that bring them joy. 🍎 Check out Nicole’s Wellbeing Web and feel free to create your own!

Field-to-Forkers also enjoyed a relaxing yoga class taught by Shavaun, celebrating the importance of healthy movement. What are some of your favorite ways to practice self care?

🍁🥕 It’s the season for wonderful autumn produce, and our farm stands are overflowing with fresh goodies! In addition to donating much of the produce grown by the YCAP crew, Field-to-Fork Club participants take home weekly shares of farm-fresh vegetables. At every farm event, like Healing Week earlier this month, the crew sets up a produce stand so our community can share in the bounty.

Lately, these beautiful stands have been filled with mixed greens, radishes, pumpkins, winter squash, mustard greens, and sweet potatoes. Just because the nights have gotten colder doesn’t mean the growth at the farm stops—there’s still so much more to harvest! 🍂🎃

Yesterday’s harvest was sweet in more ways than one! The YCAP crew brought in over 50 pounds of sweet potatoes, straight from vine to tuber. 🍠 It’s incredible to see the transformation as these hearty, nutritious crops grow and thrive on the farm. From the soil to our community, these sweet potatoes are sure to bring warmth and nourishment!

The YCAP crew had a productive workday at the farm today, harvesting sweet potatoes, salad mix, red radish, ponytail radish, okra, and carrots! These cool, crisp days are perfect for growing, and we’re seeing an abundance of beautiful mixed greens thriving in the cooler weather.

There’s nothing like the feeling of bringing in fresh produce that’s ready to nourish our community! 💚

🌱 Companion planting on the farm is one of our favorite ways to grow smarter, not harder! By pairing plants that support each other, we can naturally improve growth, protect against pests, and even enrich the soil. With garlic planting time just around the corner, don’t forget that radishes and spinach make great companions to plant alongside garlic for a healthy, thriving farm or garden! Check out this companion planting guide to start brainstorming ideas for your own urban garden.

🌿 Today, we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day by recognizing the deep connections between Indigenous communities and the land we are currently farming on. Indigenous peoples have cultivated, cared for, and protected these lands for centuries, teaching the importance of stewardship, sustainability, and community.

At the Food Literacy Project, we are constantly inspired by Indigenous knowledge of agriculture, food sovereignty, and the relationship between people and nature. Today is a reminder to honor this legacy and reflect on how we can continue to learn from these teachings as we work toward food justice.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate and uplift Indigenous voices and practices that guide us all toward a more sustainable future.
