Goldendoodles
Origin and History of the Goldendoodle-
Goldendoodles are the most popular breed of Doodle dog. They started to become very popular in the 1990s and quickly spread all over the Western world. Before being bred as a companion dog, however, Goldendoodles had a task with a lot of responsibility: They first originated in 1969 as specifically bred guide dogs for the blind. Once breeders realized what an amazing cross they had produced, Goldendoodles quickly became a popular breed choice in many countries.
A cross of the loyal, outgoing and social Golden Retriever and the non-shedding, highly intelligent Poodle, Goldendoodles combine the qualities of both parents into a perfect package. They are smart, energetic, and love to be around people.
Who invented the Goldendoodle?
It is not entirely clear who exactly came up with the idea of the Goldendoodle. However, we do know the inventor of their cousin, the Labradoodle: Labradoodles were first bred by Australian Wally Conron.
He was a breeder of guide dogs for the blind and was approached by a blind woman whose husband was allergic to the traditional guide dog choice back then, the Labrador. Conron had the idea to cross a Labrador with a Poodle to combine the one retriever’s biddable nature with the low-shedding qualities of the Poodle.
Appearance-
Especially in first-generation Goldendoodles, there is a lot of variety in looks. Every cross-breed can show the parents’ qualities in different ways – there will be some Goldendoodles that look more like Poodles and others that are more like the Golden parent. Every Goldendoodle is a surprise package!
There are Three Sizes of Goldendoodles -
If you have been considering adding a family dog that is smart, loyal and just plain gorgeous, then you are probably looking at Goldendoodles — or at least you should be. This wildly popular hybrid breed comes from crossing Poodles with Golden Retrievers. There are three sizes of Goldendoodles to choose from.
Standard Goldendoodles
Measuring from the floor to shoulder, these dogs are around 22″ and higher when full-grown. Females range from 50 pounds to 60 pounds while the heavier males weigh in from 55 pounds to 70 pounds, with some tipping the scales at even more. These are the largest of the Goldendoodle varieties and as such, need the most space to maneuver around in.
Standard Goldendoodles are wonderful companions for those who enjoy the comfort and security of a larger dog. This size works very well for owners who have homes with large fenced yards for running around and being active. (Be sure that your fence is in good shape.) Even if you don’t have a fenced yard or abundant room, you can have your local dog parks all scoped out so that you provide plenty of socialization options.
Miniature Goldendoodles
This medium-sized dog ranges from 35 pounds to 50 pounds once full-grown. Males and females come in at a similar weight. Measuring from the shoulders, Miniature Goldendoodles stand approximately 16 to 20 inches high.
Petite/Toy Goldendoodles
These little cuties may be smaller than some of the cats in your neighborhood! Females and males weigh between 20 pounds and 35 pounds. Measuring at the shoulder, they are approximately 15 inches high. Individuals who live in smaller spaces such as pet-friendly apartments and even full-time RV travelers enjoy this size Goldendoodle as the perfect companion.
They mostly come in different shades of red, though they can also be a very light cream color.
Their coat is curly or wavy and long if not cut regularly. They have floppy ears and brown eyes. Their long, beautiful tail is pretty much always wagging!
Temperament-
As a typical Doodle, your Goldendoodle will be a boisterous, happy-go-lucky companion who is always up for new adventures. Goldendoodles are highly active dogs that absolutely require an outlet for their energy every day.
They love any kind of social interaction – this can be snuggling on the couch, tagging along to a barbecue, or playing at the park – and will always be ready to make more friends!
Goldendoodles typically get along very well with other dogs. As with all dogs, however, it is important to socialize them early on in their life to prevent future reactivity.
Goldendoodles stay puppies for many years. Do not expect your dog to be grown-up and mature by the time he reaches his first birthday. Even a 5-year-old Goldendoodle can be as silly and wild as a 5-month-old. They require a lot of chews and toys and want to be entertained for several hours a day.
If you do not want a dog who will be a goofball all his life, the Goldendoodle is not for you!
Minimal shedding -
Goldendoodles have gained popularity all over the world for a host of reasons including their “allergy-friendliness.” It is life-changing for a family who has previously been unable to enjoy a family pet to have the opportunity to share their home with a wonderful new Goldendoodle. The doodle’s minimal shedding comes from the Poodle genes. You will be much more likely to snuggle with your puppy, let it sleep with the kids, and lounge on the furniture — i.e., be a fully integrated member of the family — when there is minimal shedding involved.
Coat variations-
Thanks to the hybrid nature, the coat possibilities are varied. Some people prefer a super curly puppy, while others are attracted to a mildly wavy coat. The myriad of color options is also exciting as there are numerous possibilities including amber, chalk white, sandy brown, red, apricot, black, parti, brindle, sable, chocolate, and silver.
Determining your needs-
It is easy to fall in love with these amazing dogs. After you spend some time with a puppy, you will wish you could purchase one for all of the pet lovers in your life. However, adding a family dog is a huge commitment.
Prior to making a decision, walk the perimeter of your yard and try to see it through the eyes of a dog. Are there any broken fence boards or gaps under your gate? Are there sinkholes or areas that are super soft and ripe for digging? Perhaps there is a pile of renovation garbage waiting to go to the dump full of nails and rotting wood? Making a few minor adjustments now can save you from headaches and even heartaches in the future.
