Today I met Gizmo the 7 month old yorkie!

He has had a hard time with grooming so far in his life, so his parents gave our holistic salon a try. He did well until he reached his limit, and unfortunately cooperative care does not always mean magic. In respecting his limits, we chose to only do his bath, blow dry, and brush today.

We scheduled him for next week to focus on desensitizing him to touch on the feet and undercarriage. If we can do the nails that’s a plus, but our current goal is to have him feel safe in our hands.

Cooperative care can be a long process opposed to an instantly gratifying one. Instead of pushing him to the point of biting and fleeing, we chose to take his journey one step at a time. The reason we chose this approach is because he is still young and full of potential to learn and adapt- to force fear onto this pure little guy would be counterproductive for his progress.

There's a common misconception that short-haired dogs don't require grooming, but let's set the record straight! Grooming isn't just about haircuts; it's about caring for our furry companions' overall well-being, from their body to their skin and coat.

Just like humans, animals shed skin and hair, even those labeled as "hypoallergenic" pups. Regular baths are essential to remove excess keratin and rejuvenate their coat, maintain their nails and ears, and keep them used to the process.

At my grooming salon, I recommend a monthly bath for dogs, regardless of whether they're getting a full grooming session. It's a crucial step in maintaining their health and happiness 💕

Fall is approaching! 🍂

In this transitional phase between the seasons I want to take this opportunity to share Penny’s transformative progress.

Penny is a very anxious dog. When she first came to me she was muzzled, running in circles, and beside herself from how stressed she was. Our first few grooming sessions were chaotic to say the least. Luckily, her mom has been bringing her in consistently since our first session. As we got to know each other she showed signs of improvement each groom, getting more accustomed to the process.

Today, Penny blew me away! Now she comes in with no muzzle, willfully walks into the salon without mom, and cooperates with the process. Having a grooming routine has given her the chance to realize that it’s a necessary part of her life. By implementing calm and confident energy, she can look to me and trust that what I’m doing is for her own good.

Don’t get me wrong, our grooms aren’t sunshine and rainbows. She still shakes while being dried, she still hates her legs touched, and she still lays down during the groom. Grooming is stressful, so this is why I meet her where she is at each session- to show her I care about her comfort.

This is what makes my job fulfilling and hopeful. I have faith that the grooming industry will continue to move towards cooperative grooming! 🙏🏼❤️🐶

💡 Truth: There's no scientific evidence to support this claim. Their jaw structure is similar to other dogs. They have strong jaws, yes, but they're no different from many other breeds. 💪

🚫 Myth: Pit Bulls are the most dangerous breed ❌
💡 Truth: Breed doesn't determine aggression. Responsible ownership and socialization play a huge role. Many Pit Bulls are therapy dogs, service dogs, and cherished pets. 🌟
