There is so much more to horsemanship than riding.

It took me an unfortunate amount of time to realize this.

Years of having horses on full board where I would only see them for an hour or two a day, if that, with my visits very much prioritizing riding and prepping them for rides, I really couldn’t fully get it.

While I’ve always loved my horses, for a long time that love for them was so tied to riding that I didn’t really know what to do with myself in the absence of that.

There wasn’t the same amount of peace and satisfaction within the small quiet moments, caring for them in the field or watching them interact with friends, because there was a frantic unsettledness around being sidetracked from chasing riding specific goals.

There was the discomfort of people asking why I wasn’t riding enough, why I would keep a horse who can’t be ridden or can’t accomplish XYZ goal under saddle.

Or, the discomfort of people suggesting I was letting my horses down by not using them to their full potential under saddle.

But then, I started caring for my horses day to day when I began living on the same property as them. I learned how to cherish the little moments through this and because of prioritizing their emotional state and happiness, adopting rewards based methods.

I stopped caring about the fixation on riding.

I realized I could never waste my horses’ potential by not riding or showing them enough because my horses didn’t care.

All they wanted was a peaceful life with their needs met, living amongst other horses as friends.

Riding was just a fun bonus that predominantly was of benefit to me.

Horses are so much more than vehicles.

You will never waste your horse by not riding them enough but you will watch them waste away by not allowing them to live a fulfilling life where they can find peace and happiness in all of the hours outside of rides.

When you realize how many hours your horse is living outside of your visits to the barn, it becomes unbearable to think of the majority of those hours being spent alone staring at 4 walls, in a stall.

I’ve realized in recent years that there’s nothing more fulfilling than watching horses in their natural element.

No amount of riding or access to riding facilities is worth sacrificing the freedom a horse has to spend time developing bonds with other horses and existing in peaceful relaxation.

It’s brought my soul peace and allowed for me to enjoy horses in a way that I lost very early on in my journey learning how to ride and exist around horses, where so much emphasis was placed on riding them and their use for that, with little else.
