Hi, and thanks for visiting our page!

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Leah Kirkpatrick and I love living on beautiful Lake Guntersville! My husband and our dog, Luna, love it too. We spend most days out on the water whether it be on the dock, on the boat, sailing, swimming, at the beach, hiking, diving, spearfishing, or (my personal favorite) kayaking with the dog. While I have always loved dogs and animals, I did not discover my proclivity towards teaching until I started teaching scuba diving while attending Auburn University. Its was there in the deep cool water full of bubbles and beaming faces that I realized how much I loved inspiring joy and learning. I soon began looking for jobs that allowed me to do what I loved. A few months later I was a Dog Trainer at Petco and loving every second! I have not stopped pursuing new knowledge and skills since then. During the past four years I have worked with trainers all over the southeast and learned a great deal from each one. I keep coming back to one idea: there are no bad dogs, just poor communication between dogs and their owners. Every owner can have a singular connection with their dog that is uniquely grounding and comforting. Some dogs and humans need a better way of communicating. Clear communication is all that’s holding you back from a once in a lifetime bond. I want that bond for you and your dog. First Mate Academy is eager to serve you and be an advocate for dogs and owners everywhere. Bring your lovable, misbehaving, excitable, and rude pups aboard and together well will train them to be trustworthy and devoted members of your crew!
