Once puppies enter adolescence, the amount of scientific research that reveals cute facts about them declines. We don’t really have a good word for puppy adolescence. From the cliff of “puppy” we stumble straight into “dog.” There isn’t a lot of research on the adolescent stage of dogs.

A new book explores how dogs and people grow up together.

FYI MYCOTOXIN in low doses is a cause of cancer.

🦠 High heat in the kibble manufacturing process does kill just about everything (including amino acids, essential fatty acids, and vitamins) EXCEPT mycotoxins

Mycotoxins are poisonous chemical compounds produced by molds. They can be found in all types of grains and grain byproducts, including corn, barley, soybeans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, corn gluten meal, sesame seeds, rice, and wheat.

❓Why does this matter? Because many of these grains and legumes are used in the production of pet food.

The most toxic mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1, is the most carcinogenic naturally occurring substance known. Even in doses low enough to be measured in parts per billion, these toxins are potent enough to cause acute illness in susceptible animals. When consumed in very low doses over the long term, they can result in chronic health problems, including:
• liver cancer
• anorexia and weight loss
• liver damage
• neurological disorders
• decreased resistance to disease

🤔 Pet food manufacturers are expected to test their ingredients and to require supply chain partners to test for mycotoxins. It would be interesting to call the manufacturer of the kibble you feed and ask to see the certificate of analysis that includes a detailed mycotoxin profile….. 🤷‍♀️

Harnesses can be a wonderful aid during training, as well as being safer for certain breeds than a traditional collar. As part of our training policy we only allow specific styles of harnesses to be used during sessions, and we often get questions asking why. The reason behind this is that some styl...

Socialization is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but it actually refers to a very specific period of puppy development. That said, you can teach adult dogs new skills and they don’t need to greet or engage with other dogs to be happy or fulfilled. In fact, allowing your dog to greet every dog you see can lead to longer-term behavioral issues.

Although most puppies are dog social, in adulthood most dogs become dog selective or dog tolerant. Some may even become dog reactive.

How by Toxic Is Aflatoxin?

Compared to other natural poisons…

Aflatoxin has the highest toxicity of all mold toxins.1 And for this reason, it’s one of the leading causes of liver failure and liver cancer in dogs.2

What’s worse…

There’s no known anti-toxin to neutralize it. So, once aflatoxin enters a dog’s body… there’s no way to remove it.

Two Ways Aflatoxin Can Kill Your Dog

Dogs are highly susceptible to aflatoxin poisoning.

That’s because unlike humans, who eat a varied diet…

Dogs tend to eat the same food… meal after meal… day after day… for a lifetime.

Which is why there are 2 ways aflatoxin can kill a dog.

Acute poisoning
Chronic poisoning

Amazingly, guide-dog trainers report that this skill has no effect on the dogs’ willingness to respond reliably to the “go forward” cue when there’s not an obstacle. The dogs readily understand that the refusal response is expected and accepted only when there is a potential hazard in the path. That’s some impressive cognitive thinking!

Intelligent disobedience is a skill taught to service dogs, but pet dogs can learn it's sometimes okay to refuse a cue, too.

A growing body of research has found that neutering can increase the risk of cancer, obesity and joint problems. And in some parts of Europe, neutering is viewed as an unnecessary, or even cruel and abusive, intervention.

Poodle diet advice!

Variety is the spice of life

Regarding human diets, Nestle writes, “The best way to avoid nutrient deficiencies is to eat a variety of minimally processed foods. If you do that, you don’t have to worry about specific nutrients.” This sound advice also applies to dogs. Feed a nice variety of fresh foods, rather than a single, unvarying, “complete-and-balanced” recipe, to best ensure that all your dog’s nutritional needs are met. Variety is also more interesting for your dog, makes it less likely your dog will react unfavorably to new foods, and helps prevent the development of food allergies.

For many dogs, these last few months of social isolation have been just as much of an adjustment. And now, as they have finally adjusted to having their humans around 24/7, we’re about to change up the schedule again.
Your dog may not be as prepared for this abrupt change as you think. If you’ve already dipped your toes back into the real world over the last few weeks, you may have even noticed some concerning behaviors from your dog you did not expect.

About us...

“Poodles are Labrador Retrievers with a college education. My Poodle will do anything your Lab will do. After a day of retrieving in the field, your Lab wants to curl up and snore in front of the fire. My Poodle wants to be a fourth at bridge and tell naughty stories!” --Anne Rogers Clark

Standard Poodles are our passion. We breed with an emphasis on health, diversity, correct temperament, and of course beauty! Breeding's are carefully planned to further our diverse program and hopefully for our next show prospect. Our Poodles excel in therapy and service work and make wonderful biddable family companions. Color is a fun bonus after all other criteria have been met. Our pups normally come in cream, apricot, blue, black and occasionally brown. Puppies are raised in our home and experience new adventures daily. Puppies come with a lifetime genetic health guarantee, and we are always available for support. Thank you for your consideration.
