Hi everyone! With spring on the way, its time for skunks!
We wanted to share our favorite rememdy and what to do if your pup happens to encounter the wrong end of a skunk.
We highly recommend all dog owners keep these 4 items handy, just in case. Any dog can get skunked.
Did you know that skunks can spray from over 10 feet away?
They can also spray as many as 6 times in a row.
If your dog gets sprayed, the first step is DO NOT GET THEM WET. Water will seal the skunk oil into the hair and leave you with a skunky odor for weeks to come.
You will need baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, dawn dish soap (the regular blue one), and white or apple cider vinegar.
Once sprayed, and not getting wet, rub baking soda on the sprayed areas and allow it to soak in and soak up the oil. Avoid your pets eyes, and make sure you are wearing rubber gloves to keep the oil from getting on your skin.
Next, make a paste with 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1 quart of peroxide and 2 Tablespoons of dawn dish soap. Apply the paste all over your still dry dog, paying close attention to the areas that are more saturated with skunk oil. Let this sit on your pet for 10-15 minutes.
Now add water and thoroughly scrub your pup and rinse well, repeat, using more of the paste.
After repeat washing, rinse well, and towel off some. Use a vinegar/water mix (50/50 is fine) and pour over your dog. Leave it on and let it air dry (it will not smell like vinegar once dry)
Hopefully you will never need the recipe, but just because dogs will be dogs, and skunk season is upon us, we wanted to share it.
For the hikers, bikers, hunters and adventurers that take their pups out to where the skunks are, carry a ziploc bag of baking soda with you, it can at least absorb some of the oil and make it a bit easier to deskunk when you return, and makes the ride home more tolerable as well!
