What does an aquarium bubbler do?

Bubblers add oxygen to your aquarium. But not how you think…

It may seem like oxygen would enter the water from the bubble. But this only contributes an incredibly small amount, so little in fact that it is barely worth mentioning.

Most of the oxygen in your aquarium enters from the surface and dissolves into the water through a process known as gas exchange.

When the surface is still, less oxygen enters the water than when it is moving.

Think about fish that live in rivers and oceans. The visible water on the surface is constantly moving, allowing for a greater amount of oxygen to enter the water.

A bubbler does the same thing, on a much smaller scale.

As the bubbles rise, they agitate the surface, allowing a greater amount of oxygen to enter the water.

A dwarf cichlid, kribensis is a colorful fish that's easy to care for. Its Latin name translates to "beautiful belly." During the spawning season, the female sports a brilliant, cherry-red colored belly. Kribensis fish originate in the African waters of southern Nigeria and the coastal areas of Cameroon. They prefer shallow water with thick vegetation but are tolerant of many different levels of water hardness.

Although they are a peaceful fish, they may nip the fins of slow-moving fish such as angels. If other cichlids are to live in the tank, choose a species that is not bottom-dwelling so they won't compete for the same territory.

A breeding pair should have the tank to themselves, as they become very aggressive while spawning and caring for the young. If kept in a tank with other fish, avoid bottom-dwelling fish such as plecos.

The HOCKEY STICK TETRA

The species is best kept in groups, to allow the species to school, in tropical freshwater community aquaria with other peaceful, non-predatory fishes. This fish tolerates a fairly broad range of water pHs, but prefers acidic water for breeding.

This normally schooling species forms pairs that scatter their many adhesive eggs amongst plants. Clutch size is very large and may be up to 1000 eggs, the embryos of which are black in colour. The eggs hatch in about 20 hours and are free-swimming after 4 days
