The canine community as a whole will be greatly affected by this new regulation. It'll have significant impact on the Standard Schnauzers breed in the US, as well.

Help Stop the New Dog Importation Regulations Before It’s Too Late!

On May 13, the CDC published new federal dog importation regulations that go into effect August 1st. (Federal Register, Document Number 2024-09676).
In a shocking example of government overreach that will have negative effects on dog lovers and small businesses nationwide, the 311-page document is a poorly written and unactionable "one size fits all" solution for the importation of dogs from every country in the world with no exemptions for the military, government employees working abroad, or service dogs in training as puppies.

There's a reason for waiting until the right age to test. This need to wait is why most unethical breeders don't test at all.

"Who wants to wait until a dog is 2 yrs old to breed!? It could have had 3 or 4 litters by then and still be young enough to rehome as a young dog!" 🤨

Have you ever wondered why the minimum age for hip and elbow clearances is 24 months?
OFA hip and elbow clearances look at the conformation of the joints to evaluate if there are any deformities or evidence of disease. While preliminary results are generally reliable, the accuracy of the final grade and the ability to diagnose hip dysplasia increases at 24 months of age. Degenerative arthritic changes secondary to hip or elbow dysplasia can take time to appear on radiographs, especially mild cases. The 24 month mark has been shown to be reliable for diagnosis because it ensures growth is complete and allows for degenerative changes to be seen. This age is also still young enough to allow breeders and owners to make informed decisions for the dog's future.

FYI: any breeder missing this credential on their breeding dogs is NOT a reputable, responsible standard schnauzer breeder. If done at the appropriate age, this is a one-time test, and the results will be public on the OFA website (or with an official OFA report, if done early). This evaluation cannot be done by your everyday, general-medicine vet, which just serves as more proof that true reputable, responsible breeders are putting in the extra effort to breed only the best and healthiest representatives of the breed.

Did you know? Dogs must be 24 months or older for OFA Hip and Elbow certification, and 12 months or older for Cardiac, Patellas, and Thyroid certification. There is no age minimum for eye certification, nor for DNA, since DNA does not change as the dog ages.

The OFA also does Preliminary evaluations on hips and elbows before 24 months of age. However, they will need to be re-evaluated again for a final certification once the dog reaches 24 months.

This is a good article, and it hits on one issue with the SS community. Most people are introduced to our breed via the television--viewers catch them in a dog show, in dog sports events, maybe a stray commercial here or there. Yes, they are visually striking and seemingly well-behaved in front of the camera...but that doesn't mean they are the dog for everyone. They have many characteristics that make them a breed potential buyers should be leery of as much as they are interested in. One thing every responsible buyer should do is research the breed's characteristics, temperament, and history to determine if the personality behind that regal-looking SS is really want you're wanting in a dog.

Just because a TV dog or pup in a dog show appears to be the perfect pet doesn't mean they'll fit well in your home. Here's what you need to consider.

The bold, bewhiskered Standard Schnauzer is a high-spirited farm dog from the area around Bavaria and Württemberg in Germany. A breed of great antiquity, recognizable Standard Schnauzers appear in art as early as the 15th century. The Standard Schnauzer (Mittelschnauzer, or medium Schnauzer) is the prototype for two Schnauzer breeds developed much later—the late 19th century Miniature Schnauzer (Zwergschnauzer) and the mid-20th century Giant Schnauzer (Riesenschnauzer). 🐾
