Rusk County has approved $25,000 for the spay/neuter program with the option to revisit additional funds if these are depleted!

The voucher is up to $65 towards the spay/neuter of cats and dogs.

These vouchers will be good at use at any DeHart Veterinary (DHV) or Animal Protection League (APL) locations. Each serves different locations so check which is nearest to you.

WHO CARES?

I will not see this little racoon dining on my front porch again as it was dead in the road as I headed to the vet first thing this morning. It was one of the racoons who nightly frequent the Front Porch buffet at the Duncan Home For Wayward Cats. :(

The vet trip was for our feralish boy Feisty who arrived here 11/04/2021 as a tiny untouchable kitten and has remained so until a few weeks ago when he approached me for help and petting. Unheard of for him. Long story short, the vet called at closing today and said his test results indicate that he should not even be alive, but he is. He remains there tonight for a Hail Mary blood transfusion on Thursday morning and then he'll be coming home for better or worse. :(

Two different people called me today about two mama cats that had been killed leaving baby kittens behind and they have no idea how to bottle feed them or help them. :(

Another person called me about 5 scraggly kittens with gunky eyes roaming alone in a rural area. :(

Then while I am fretting about all those kittens and cats that I do not have the resources to help, I was also unable to save a poor little kitten in my care who was being devoured by fleas and had not eaten in a while. It was so weak that it could not swallow or eat and could barely move. It took its last breath while in my hands along with a piece of me. :( R.I.P. little one.

For me, this was an unusually BAD day because today all the compassion, dollars and care that I could muster still failed to ease the plight of any of these tiny lives.

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP CLASS IN SCHOOL?

The animal overpopulation problem in Texas that results in Texas killing more animals in shelters every year than any other state is a PEOPLE problem according to the Texas Department of Public Health and Safety.

Based on conversations with a local educator, it may be a possibility to introduce a PET OWNERSHIP CLASS in at least one school and your input about course content could make a real difference in how the students going through the course exit with better knowledge and understanding of the animal overpopulation problem in Texas and how they can be be part of the solution to that problem by being responsible pet owners and demonstrating compassion for homeless animals failed by humans.

What are the most important topics that you would include in a responsible pet ownership class if it were taught in school?

In what grade would you suggest it be taught?

What could be taught in school to help change people's disregard for animal lives, lack of empathy for pet circumstances, ignorance about responsible pet care, neglect of pet needs and health care, abandonment is a crime, cruelty is a crime, etc.?

Please comment a few bullet points for the key topics that you think every pet owner (young or old) and parents of children should know to be responsible pet owners.

LAST MINUTE REQUEST FOR SIX (6) SPONSORSHIPS

You have the unique opportunity to stop a cat population explosion BEFORE it happens rather than helping clean up the aftermath later.

I received a call today from a Henderson lady recently out of the hospital and struggling financially who said she has two mama cats (one pregnant) and four 5-month old kittens being kept indoors.
(3 male kittens and 1 female kitten)

She states that she keeps them all indoors; HOWEVER, since female kittens can get pregnant at 4 months and the brothers are old enough to sire offspring, she is sitting on a powder keg of kittens waiting to explode. Not to mention the litter the pregnant mom will soon have. And then the need to spay and neuter more cats starts all over again.

When asked about the pregnant mama cat, she said it must have gotten outside while she was in the hospital.

She is seeking to rehome the pregnant female,

This poor lady will be flooded with kittens in no time, so I am seeking SIX sponsors to cover the basic costs of 3 spays ($50 + $12= $62 each) and 3 neuters ($40 + $12 = $52 each) for her six cats.

Total $342 for only those services. This amount does not include wormer, flea meds, microchip or FeLV/FIV testing and extra vaccinations that I always have done for cats that will be adopted out.

Our cost per cat that we prep for adoption is about $207, but since these cats are not in our care and they already have a home with her, we can reduce cat overpopulation for the BARGAIN price of only $52 or $62 per cat.

Trusting that some cat loving followers will step up, I have already issued a voucher to her for 3 neuters Wed 05/22/2024 in Henderson to minimize the potential population explosion in her house, but that is not enough. The three females also need to be spayed as soon as appointments are available.

MY FRIEND BILL NELSON LOVES CATS

And every year he puts his heart into raising funds for them through a multitude of different fundraising efforts. One of them is featured below.

This year he raised $40,000 for Minnesota cats through all his efforts. He has raised as much as $75,000 in some years. I told him he was slacking this year. :)

CALLING ALL CAT LOVERS

It should not be this hard to save a cat from a kill shelter.

However, It took a week for a team of a dozen people, multiple rescues and a long-distance transporter to acquire Egypt from the Canton, Texas kill shelter.

Fortunately, she is finally safe at the Duncan Home For Wayward Cats and now YOU can be part of her rescue with your contribution to her care campaign.

She is expecting kittens so her campaign target goal will be adjusted after her kittens are born.

WHEN THE CAT DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM CHOOSES YOU

When a kitten or cat come into your life its easy to become distracted with their cuteness and entertainment value but if you procrastinate, one kitten WILL become a litter of kittens so fast your head will spin.

Then you'll be calling shelters and rescues begging them to take a pregnant cat or a whole LITTER OF KITTENS when you could have contained it to a single cat or kitten if you had taken action sooner.

DO NOT DILLY DALLY AROUND.

Be responsible for their well-being and promptly spay, neuter and vaccinate when of age. Do this whether you plan to keep them or not. Be part of the solution instead of perpetuating the problem.
