Leash walks are honestly one of my favorite things. I get the opportunity to enrich my doggo friends' lives while we explore different neighborhoods in Eureka that I might not otherwise explore. We are so lucky to live in such a creative place! Lovely gardens, colorful murals, home made folk art, and victorian houses. Yesterday Hippo and I saw 4 different varieties of passionflower 🏵

“Balanced” is one of the more deceitful words used in the unregulated field of dog training. This approach utilizes both positive reinforcement (rewards-based) methods and aversives (physical punishment). It might sound appealing to use all of the tools available. However, there is no evidence to suggest dogs, regardless of learning style or ability, learn more effectively when aversive training methods are included in the process....

The scientific research on dog training clearly highlights the numerous risks associated with aversive methods. These include a weakened bond with your dog; increased levels of stress, fear, anxiety, and aggression; reduced effectiveness of training; and a more pessimistic outlook in your dog (e.g., China et al., 2020; de Castro et al., 2019; Ziv, 2017).

The evidence is so compelling that many organizations, such as the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB), firmly oppose such techniques:

'The ACVB opposes training methods that cause short- or long-term pain, discomfort, or fear. Aversive methods can endanger both people and animals, threaten animal welfare by hindering learning, increasing fear-based behaviors, and causing direct injury.' "

By Mary Angilly, force-free positive dog trainer and Marc Bekoff, Ph.D.

❓️When is too hot for a dog to be left in your car?
I did an experiment today to find out.

I recorded the temperature before beginning errands in Eureka/Arcata. I was parked in the sun all morning with windows rolled up. Today is a clear sunny day.
(59° outside - 90° inside)

Then recorded after driving for 60 minutes with the AC on.
(63° outside - 69° inside)

Then recorded again, after leaving my car in its cooled down state with the windows down and the windshield sun block up. Again, 60 minutes.
(63° outside - 82° inside)

Even with precautions taken, the temperature jumped 13° and into a potentially dangerous zone in those 60 minutes. In conclusion- even if it's mild and comfortable outside, it may not be inside your car!

Fast changes in temperature and temps 75° and above for prolonged periods can cause heat stroke. This is especially possible for dogs whom are not acclimated to those temperatures, are brachycephalic breeds (pug, shih tzu, French bulldog, boxer, boston terriers, bully breeds), or are elderly, under 6 months, XL size, obese.

Parking in shade and providing access to drinking water can provide extra relief, but it's best to keep trips where your dog must be in the car by itself limited to 15 minutes.

How to introduce dogs for the best success!
Avoid leash reactivity!

We handle many dog-selective dogs and first impressions really are everything. One way to introduce new dogs and let them get to know eachother in a comfortable low-stress way is "parallel walking".

An important thing to note: stranger dogs meeting head to head for greeting, especially when on leash and pulling towards eachother, can quickly escalate into conflict. This happens even if dogs are normally nice and playful and just pulling forward to say hi and play. Dogs view direct eye contact and face to face greetings as aggressive. The leash tension can make them feel restrained, trapped, anxious, and overwhelmed. This is where leash reactivity happens.

"Parallel walking" is a method where both dogs are walked separately, a decent distance apart, in the same direction. This gives the dogs the opportunity to see and smell eachother without pressure to interact. Once both dogs both show comfortable body language, the distance between them can be decreased. Once you're close, you can offer the opportunity for short greetings, being careful that the leash remains loose.

‼️IMPORTANT READ FOR HUMBOLDT DOG OWNERS

Sept. 6, 2024 - Two dogs die after swimming in the Eel River near Fernbridge

"Environmental health officials are reminding community residents to be on the lookout for harmful algal blooms after two dogs died a short time after swimming in a small pool off the Eel River near Fernbridge on Thursday, Sept. 5. "

A follow up on the Sea Lion that was seen in the arcata marsh/klopp lake/arcata bay: It was found deceased and the city has opted to allow nature to take its course with decomposition. What does this mean for dog owners? This area has always been a leashed dog area but due to the potential transmission of Leptospirosis from sea mammals to dogs, it's even more important to have a watchful eye and keep control of your pet in these spaces and out of the water.

Generally speaking our area would be considered "high risk" so I would encourage you all to seek the leptospirosis vaccination from your vet if you walk your pups in our local parks and beaches or if they have contact with dogs outside your family.

What is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a potentially deadly bacteria passed through contact with an infected animals urine or bodily fluids. Symptoms can be mild (none at all, weak, lethargic, achey, vomiting) or severe (kidney and liver failure) Dogs use their mouths to explore their enviroment and clean their paws and body, and drink from outdoor water sources so they are exceptionally suseptible. It can be transmitted to humans as well.

-----

● Transmission & Infection risk

Dogs, rodents, livestock, people and cats can all be infected with Leptospira bacteria; however, signs of disease are rare in cats.

Wildlife (e.g. raccoons, skunks, rats, mice, opossums) can be infected (without being sick) and can spread the bacteria into the environment through their urine.

Leptospirosis is usually spread (transmitted) to a dog, cat or human after they have contact with an infected animal’s urine and it enters their body through open cuts, scrapes and skin wounds or splashes onto their mucous membranes (e.g. eyes, open mouth).

Infection is also spread by contact with items contaminated with infected urine (e.g. water bowls, shared bedding/blankets, food, soil). Sometimes infection can occur after an animal bite or due to eating infected tissue (e.g. animal carcass). Leptospira can survive in the environment for many months.

The bacteria are frequently found in wet environments and stagnant water sources (e.g. lakes, ponds, rivers and puddles). Outbreaks and increased risk of disease can occur after heavy rains or flooding.

● How can I stop this from happening to my dog and other dogs?

Be informed. Knowing which areas have leptospirosis or are at higher risk will enable you (and your dog) to avoid them. Slow moving water, puddles or areas known to have high populations of rodents or raccoons are higher risk for leptospirosis.

Other dogs that live in the same household/kennel where one dog has been diagnosed with leptospirosis may need treatment. It is important to let your veterinarian know about your other dogs – and other pets.

Vaccinate your dog(s) if you live in an area known to have leptospirosis or if your dog is at higher risk. This can include dogs spending time in higher risk areas (e.g. field trial, hunting, traveling to regions known to have had an outbreak (human or canine) or with a high level of dog to dog contact).

Current vaccines prevent four of the eight common serovars causing disease in dogs and serve as an important component to protecting dogs. Recent studies indicate current leptospirosis vaccines are safe and effective and are strongly encouraged for dogs at risk for disease.
