It was a great day at the Phoenix airport yesterday joining another trainer and her service dog group (Andy Lloyd with Dandy Dawgs). Escalators, elevators, the sky train, baggage claim and tons of people! I brought Roxie and Chunk who were both like seasoned pros! Chunk even used my backpack as a pillow to sleep on the sky train 😆

Roxie finally had her breakthrough moment learning to jump up to hit a button! Handicapped buttons are next!!! And yes, I'm training in my pajamas yet again. There are just no excuses not to train your dog at any given moment!!!

01/03/2026

Before many of my dogs start public access training, I "wear" them as much as possible. They are attached to me as I do everyday things, such as prepare their chicken treats (FYI for those I've ever cooked for, my dogs are never allowed in the kitchen unless I'm preparing their treats or practicing service dog tasks!) You can see in this video, I was able to catch Munchie dumpster diving and give him a simple verbal correction. Wearing your dog will also help the timid ones get used to noises and such and can really get the leash pullers used to being right at your side. This is what I consider to be effortless training that helps in so many ways! There is no excuse not to do this - you can do it in your pajamas on a rainy day!

I know I've been posting a lot of stuff lately about public access training for service dogs. I want to get the message out about just how important this training is! It's the main reason a dog doesn't make it as a service dog and becomes a wash out. It is incredibly important to introduce different environments and experiences gradually. Too many people rush this training or don't do enough of it or do it often enough. Here's Roxie at Costco, staying completely out of the way of other people and carts. We had to practice opening the freezer door several times before she'd stay put and allow it to open over her back without moving.

Put the time in with your service dog in training so that you'll end up with a completely reliable dog under any circumstances. They'll need to be able to perform tasks ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!

Now it's time for Lena to get her public access training in. Roxie came along, too, and we met up with our friend and her service dog in training as well as Roxie's potential recipient (all is lookingverypromisingthere!) Lena was far from perfect, but very good. She handled the crowds of people, running and screaming children and all the other dogs (including some that were a bit threatening) VERY well. It took her a few minutes to settle down nicely in the restaurant, but once she did, she was perfect!

More practice downtown tonight 🙂
