Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. We hope everyone stayed safe during our first winter storm of 2024! Our storm here in the foothills of NC turned out to be nothing! Just cold rain and luckily no ice. Some of our friends and barns to the north did however get ice and some snow. We always have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Winter weather here in the Carolinas is so unpredictable. We are happy knowing spring is just 72 days away. That might seem like a long time, but it will go by so fast. Today we look back to January 16th 2022 when we did see a decent amount of snow here in the farm. The Watusi love a good snowfall.

Have a great week and remember to be kind to others and help those in need.

Don’t forget to like, share, and comment to keep up with all the shows and happenings around the farm.

Good morning and Happy New Year from Drowning Creek Farm. It seems as though each year now flies by faster and faster here on the farm. The one thing for certain is that time does not stand still for no one. During the year we saw beautiful sunrises and sunsets on the farm, we added several new baby watusi, fences were mended and barns repainted and we made many new friends both at shows and on Facebook. But we also experienced sadness. We saw the loss of family, friends and loved ones that we will held so dear in our hearts. We saw clients and friends select new barns, horses were sold and others sadly passed away. Our hope is that 2024 is filled with joy, love, new friendships, new opportunities, new clients, and new champions! May God continue to bless each and every one of you and watch over us here on the farm. Drowning Creek Farm was formed over 60 years ago with the love of two wonderful people with Landon & Pauline Eckard. Their love of horses, family and friends created memories that we will cherish forever. May we never forget our humble beginnings and always remember those who have helped us along the way to make Drowning Creek Farm the wonderful barn family it is today.

Happy New Year.

Good morning and happy Christmas Eve. We hope everyone is now able to start slowing down today and enjoying time with your family and friends as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Earlier this week I was reading an article about the Christmas donkey and its meaning around Christmas. Christians know the donkey as he carried Mary to Bethlehem and is the one animal to have a cross sign on his back. But did you also know that some believe the animals could talk? In other parts of the world, there is a legend that draws children to all kinds of stables and stalls throughout the country each Christmas Eve night. They are hoping to hear a miracle of the animals talking. When baby Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem, it was a working stable, filled with animals of all kinds, including the little donkey. According to the legend, Christ’s birth occurred at exactly midnight. Inside the stable, the animals watched in wonder as the newborn baby was lovingly wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in a small manger. Suddenly, God gave the animals voices and immediately they began to give praise for the miracle they had just seen. This went on for several minutes and just before the shepherds arrived, the animals again fell silent. The only humans who had heard them were Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. This legend makes me wonder if the animals of our barns will be talking at midnight tonight on this Christmas Eve. If so, what will they be saying to one another? Before you settle down tonight and await the arrival of Santa, take a moment and sneak into your barns and stables. Listen for the animals to talk. You too just might hear a Christmas miracle.

From our barn family to yours, have a wonderful Christmas. Remember to always be kind and help others in need.

Merry Christmas from all of us and the animals of Drowning Creek Farm.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. It is a cold and rainy morning here at the farm. Everyone is in the Christmas mood and ready for Santa 🎅. After all the animals were fed, stalls cleaned, and we had our morning donuts and coffee from Dunkin, we sat next to the warm fireplace and talked about great memories from the past. Today we decided to look back to December 2007 and an article that was in Saddle Horse Report by Merritt Pryor. Attached are some great photos. If you are in the photos or know the people, we would love to hear from you.

Enjoy…….

HILDEBRAN, N.C. - Drowning Creek Farm hosted their annual Christmas Party on Dec. 8, 2007. The weather was perfect for the party with above average temperatures.

The party began with Lewis Eckard working some of his customers’ horses. After he rode, the customers were given the opportunity to ride. A highlight of the morning was when Emily Rankin was given the chance to ride her mom’s high powered five-gaited mount, Fog. Allie Wellington rode First Asset, a young park horse that has been shown by Eckard, for the crowd to see. Rebekah Cloninger rode her road horse, Diamond Hustler, and her five-gaited pony, Jeweled Star.

After the horses were worked, lunch was served. A spread filled with barbecue, shrimp cocktail, chicken pot pie and too many desserts to count were enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Ray Cloninger made the trip from the Charlotte area to award the Carolina Circuit Champions and Reserve Champions with a plaque, ribbon and fleece jacket. Rebekah Cloninger received a championship award with Diamond Hustler in the roadster horse under saddle division. She also received reserve awards with Dusty Beau in the junior exhibitor five-gaited division, Royal Count in the amateur roadster horse division and with My Mountains Heir in the junior exhibitor park division. Allie Wellington was awarded the championship ribbon, plaque, and jacket for CH It’s Yabba Dabba Doo Time in the junior exhibitor show pleasure division. Annette Green was presented the reserve championship ribbon for her performances with Ro-Day-O in the country pleasure driving division. Susan Whittington took the championship ribbon, plaque and jacket home for her performance in the show pleasure driving division with CH Harlem’s Babe Ruth.

The day ended with hugs and best wishes for the upcoming holidays and New Year.

We hope you have a wonderful week.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. It is a very rainy cold morning here in the foothills of NC. We do need rain but not the severe stuff they say we might see. Prayers for those affected last night in Tennessee with the tornado. Saturday we celebrated the birthday of Lewis Eckard and the arrival of a new baby calf (we planned it as for a surprise for Lewis). Her name is Pinkney and she is a cutie! Some friends and family came out to the barn to help Lewis celebrate his day. We started off with breakfast for everyone and our DCF favorite..Dunkin’ Donuts and coffee! Then it was off to the show arena for some morning exercise for the ponies and horses. Valet Parking always loves showing us why we love the hackney breed.

Lewis wanted to thank everyone who called, text, or visited him for his birthday. So many wonderful messages and phone calls. Thank you to Heather and Shelia Lail and all your help everyday on the farm.

Here are a few pics from around the farm Saturday morning.

Have a wonderful week. Remember to always be kind and help those in need.

Today, we would like to wish Hall of Fame Trainer Lewis Eckard a very Happy Birthday. Lewis is the owner and trainer at Drowning Creek Farm that his parents started more than 50 years ago. From the very young age of 14, Lewis has been a part of the saddlebred and hackney industry. Lewis has judged Louisville numerous times, owned and trained world champions, has been inducted into roadhorse, hackney and saddlebred societies and has worked along side many of the greatest trainers in the saddlebred and hackney industry. Lewis is known for creating champions and continues that legacy still today on his farm here in Hildebran NC. Happy Birthday Lewis from all your family and friends at Drowning Creek Farm.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. We hope everyone had a great week. We are finally getting some much needed rain on the farm this weekend. Saturday we celebrated our annual Christmas party at the home of one of our clients. Friends and family came into town to celebrate this wonderful evening. We started the morning working a few horses at the barn for our clients we live out of town. After a rainy foggy day, we gathered to enjoy some awesome bbq and all the sides, appetizers and desserts one could ask for. Such a wonderful evening was had by everyone who attended. Thank you to Dale Bales for making several of the custom DCF gifts that were given out. Thank you Lana Eckard Ray for the first copies of her new children’s book. If you haven’t found that perfect gift for a child, please don’t miss out on this book. For those who missed giving Tuesday, you still have time. Please consider giving to Victory Farm and supporting their therapeutic riding program. Dory does an amazing job and they could not do all they offer without the support of others. Remember to always be kind and help those in need. From all of us at DCF, have a wonderful week.

Don’t forget to like, share and comment to keep up with all things happenings around the farm and at shows.

Good morning and happy Dec 1st from Drowning Creek Farm. You only have 24 more shopping days until Christmas! One gift that would be wonderful under your tree this year would be the new book from Lana Eckard Ray. The book is called “How a little firefly saved the light of the world”. Both of her children’s books are now available on Amazon. We are so excited for Lana. Lana is the sister to Lewis Eckard and is no stranger to the saddlebred and hackney families. We love supporting local and the DCF family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ohlson family on hearing the news of Mike’s passing. Amanda showed for several years under the DCF banner and won many championships with her horses Madea and Kirkwood. From all of us at Drowning Creek Farm, we send our condolences and prayers for the Ohlson family.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. We hope everyone had an amazing week. Hard to believe it is Nov 12th and this week we had highs in the 80’s here in the foothills of NC. Crazy Carolina weather. Saturday we enjoyed getting our morning started with our hot coffee and Dunkin Donuts. Our great friends from Concord drove up to visit us and to watch a very nice prospect in training at DCF. The future is very bright for this one in 2024. We finished the morning with Valet Parking showing us just how high a hackney pony can jump! Secretly we think he wants to be a hunter jumper and not a cobtail. Lol.

Please keep the Eckard family in your thoughts and prayers as we learned of the passing of Sid Brannon. Sid was the long time friend/ partner of Lana Ray. Lana is the daughter of Pauline and Landon Eckard and sister to Lewis and Shelia. Lana is no stranger to the saddlebred industry. Lana and her late husband Calvert owned many champions and her sons George and Charles both showed horses.

Thank you to all those who have served our country and continue to protect it today. Veterans Day is very special to DCF. Our founder Landon Eckard served in the navy.

We want to wish a speedy recovery for Lewis and Shelia. Both have been feeling under the weather this week. Thank you Heather for all you do for us here at DCF.

We hope you have a great week. Remember to always be kind and help others who are in need.

Don’t forget to like, share, and comment on all things DCF to keep up with the shows and happenings around the farm.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. What a crazy week for Carolina weather. We started out the first of the week with freezing temps to finish Saturday with highs in the 70’s. This week we will be back in the 80’s! Saturday was a fun relaxed day on the farm as show season has now ended for us. Ponies and horses enjoyed running and exercising in the freshly repainted arena. Everyone is looking forward to some winter downtime and enjoying the holiday season. Hard to believe Christmas is just around the corner. Safe travels to everyone headed to the Clemson fall classic horse show. Remember to always be kind and to help others.

Have a great week.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. What a beautiful fall weekend it has been here in the foothills of NC. So many beautiful colors are at their peak around the farm. We wanted to congratulate those who are bringing home blue ribbon wins to NC from the Ocala horse show. Congrats to our very special friends Karen and Ricky Voerg on their championship wins with Crackerjack. Saturday was a fun day on the farm as we were able to visit with some of our longtime friends who drove up to the farm. One of the things that makes the horse industry so special is having those friends who you go back many years with and sharing the love we have of horses. Thank you Heather and Shelia for all you do for the farm. We hope everyone has a wonderful safe Halloween. Remember to always be kind to others.

Have a wonderful week. It is supposed to be very cold later this week! Bundle those ponies up!

Happy Monday! Here are a few photos of this past weekend at the Dallas Fall Classic horse Show. Thank you Merritt Sumner for always taking such wonderful photos. The amazing thing that was captured in all these photos……happiness, love, friendships, and unity. DCF is very fortunate to have so many true friends and supporters in the horse industry.

Good afternoon from Drowning Creek Farm. What a beautiful weekend it has turned out to be. Our week started on a somber note as we lost a great friend Joe Cook. Joe started with DCF back when Lewis was just 13 years old. Joe was actually Lewis’s first client over 61 years ago. Please keep Joe and his family in your thoughts as they cope with the loss of a loved one.

We are home from the Dallas Fall Classic Horse Show. We had an amazing time seeing our friends and stabling next too some very fine horse friends. Great friends such as Grant Shiftlet Stables, Carolene Stables, and Barney Garrison. We love seeing our friends, Grant Shiftlet, Merritt Sumner, Ann Dawson, Anne White, Jay and Dale Webster, Jill Stewart, Kim Thomoson…. So many DCF supporters who came out to share stories and enjoy a great evening of showing horses. Thank you to Taylor Young and Christopher Bowman for your help with our fine harness horse I’m Looking Supreme. Big shout out to our very own Heather Lail. Heather is the backbone that helped get this show together. Heather also is the one who makes sure our hackney pony Valet Parking always looks his best. Brandon, you did an amazing job getting everyone safely into and out if the ring. Your help in the stall area and other barns does not go unnoticed. Randy and Glen, thank you both for your help and expertise. These two gentleman go way back with Lewis and DCF. You never forget those things that you truly enjoy and love.

Thank you Kathy Carpenter for another wonderful show in Dallas. As always your team with Louie and Olivia were superstars with helping with show. We love the Christmas cards! Beautiful holiday gift. To our friend and show judge Krista Dent, you did an amazing job. Very honored to have you judge our athletes.

Thank you to goes to our Hall of Fame Trainer Lewis Eckard. Your wisdom, guidance, and support shows with every person you put in the arena. Your eye for detail is amazing. Thank you for all that you do for DCF and all the others that you have such a positive impact on.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Dallas and cheered us on and supported DCF. Don’t forget to like, share, comment on all the shows and happenings around the farm. Have a great week.

Good Sunday morning from Drowning Creek Farm. We hope that you had a wonderful week. The temps are starting to get cooler and the leaves are starting to show some colors here in the foothills of NC. Saturday we started our day with our Dunkin’ Donuts and coffee. Who doesn’t love a good blueberry donut? Then it was off to the training arena as we are heading out this week for the Dallas Fall Classic Horse Show. I’m Looking Supreme and Valet Parking will be returning again and looking for another blue ribbon victory pass. It is truly an honor to show at the Dallas Horse Show outdoor venue. Did you know……The history of this show dates back more than 50 years. The DCF family has spent many of those years showing horses in Dallas. There is so much nostalgia with this outdoor arena. Once you enter the gate, you travel across the beautiful lawn and onto a well maintained track to the cheers of fans loving a good horse show as the evening sun sets. Anyone who truly loves showing their horse or pony will get a feeling deep down of all the greats that got their start right here in this very arena. Many world champions, hall of fame trainers and riders and drivers have fond memories here. Historic venues like Dallas have disappeared and only to be replaced with developments and shopping centers. Thank you Kathy Carpenter for keeping this show going and providing an opportunity for some to make a memory that will last a lifetime. Thank you to Shelia and Heather Lail who keep DCF looking great, clients happy and ponies and horses looking their best. We look forward to seeing all of our barn friends this weekend in Dallas. Look for updates later this week from the show.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. We hope you had an amazing week. What a beautiful day Saturday on the farm. The temperatures in the fall here in the foothills are just perfect. This time of year we are starting to wind down and prepare for the winter months. Great time of the year to get in those much needed maintenance projects like repainting the fences and general upkeep of the barns. With a Dunkin donut and coffee in hand, we were ready to get our morning training going. It is always a great day when Dr Don Gibson joins us at the farm from Kentucky. It was off to the practice arena with Don and his champion horse Star. Love watching the beauty and grace a fine harness horse brings to a show. Next up, the energetic and spunky Valet parking. Valet loves a good cool morning and the more you cheer the more he likes to show off that hackney spirit! Lunch was special as we enjoyed some great brisket, bbq and sides from JD’s bbq here near the farm. We finalized our plans as we get ready for our next show. Thank you Heather and Shelia for all you do at DCF. Lewis, your knowledge, guidance and leadership is why you are a Hall of Fame trainer. Anyone who has the pleasure of sitting with you just one hour, will know more hackney training knowledge than any book can teach you. We are fortunate to be a part of your team at DCF.

We hope you have a great week. Remember to thank those who help take care of your equine athletes and always be kind to others.

Don’t forget to like, share and comment to keep up with all things happening around the farm and at the shows.

Happy National Hackney Day. Over the many years, DCF has had the honor of working with and owning many hackney ponies including world champions. They are such a wonderful breed and have such beautiful motion. DCF also is very proud to be a part of two wonderful organizations. The AHHS or American Hackney Horse Society and the SHHS or Southeastern Hackney Horse Society. Both organizations promote the hackney breed and provide opportunities to learn more about this amazing equine. Here are some of our favorite hackney photos from over the years.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. Can you believe it is already Oct 1st? This year is flying by so fast. What a beautiful day on the farm Saturday. We started our morning out with no power! The power company showed and confirmed our thought….a little critter with a fury tail had gotten into the transformer. After a quick fix, power was restored and we saw the light! Lol. We started our morning with our Dunkin’ Donuts, coffee and breakfast sandwiches for everyone. DCF runs on Dunkin! Then it was off the the training arena for exercise and practice for Valet Parking and Star. These two never disappoint and continue to wow us everyday. We are looking forward to our next show with these two in a few weeks.

Happy Birthday today to Brandon Scott Shepard. Brandon has been a part of DCF for many years. Brandon helps around the farm and is often our go to guy for getting people into and out of arena shows safely and back to stalls.

Happy belated Birthday to Casey Surface of Carousel Farms in West Virginia. Casey and his wife Leigh are great friends of the DCF family and have the cutest little boy named Porter.

Thank you always to Heather and Shelia Lail for all your hard work around the farm.

We leave you this morning with some beautiful photos from around the farm. What an amazing photo of our retired hackney pony Sweetie, and her barn mate Lima Cajun!

Have a great week. Remember to like, share, and comment to keep up with the shows and happenings around the farm.

Good morning from Drowing Creek Farm. Fall has officially arrived here in the foothills of NC. With fall comes changes here on the farm. Cooler temps and the changing of leaves create a beautiful canvas of colors. Our barnyard animal friends love the cooler temps and spending time outside enjoying the fall sun. We see the many reasons that our founders Landon and Pauline Eckard chose this beautiful piece of land to create Drowning Creek Farm and begin their family. We hope that you “Fall in Love” with the farm as much as we do. Our next show is just a few weeks away. Thank you to everyone who continues to follow us, send positive messages and support DCF. We love hearing from you and hearing fond memories you had over the many years with the Eckard family. We leave you with some of our fall favorite moments from around the farm.

We hope you have a wonderful week.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. We hope everyone had a wonderful week. Saturday was a overcast day here in the foothills of NC. We started the day with breakfast and Dunkin’ Donuts for everyone. Then it was off to the training arena for Valet Parking and James Coffey to show us how spectacular a hackney pony can be. His personal caregiver Heather Lail loves spending her Saturday morning with her boy. For trainers Lewis Eckard and Shelia Lail, this pony continues to get better and better.

Update on Lewis’s health. Lewis continues to get better and better each week. One great news we received this week was a negative PSA test result for him. We are truly blessed with these results.

Safe travels to all those traveling this week to the NC State Championship horse show. Lots of great horses and ponies from here in the Carolina’s.

Drowning Creek Farm would like to wish Shelia Lail a Happy Birthday today. She is celebrating her 29th and holding birthday as a lady never tells her age. Shelia is one of the hardest working people we know at DCF and is the backbone of keeping the barn running day to day.

From all us us at DCF, Shelia we hope you have a wonderful day filled with love, relaxation and enjoyment.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. It has been a hot week here on the farm! We are ready for fall and the much cooler temps. It has been an exciting week here on the farm with the arrival of two new baby watusi. They are so precious when they first arrive into this world. Saturday we started our morning with our Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s biscuits for everyone. Gotta keep our strength up in this crazy heat. Then off to the training arena for Valet Parking to get his morning exercise and training. This pony continues to get better and better. He has the two best hackney trainers in the industry with Lewis Eckard and Shelia Lail. And he has the best stall and overall care with Heather Lail by his side. Valet Parking is one spoiled hackney pony!

Congrats to all the Carolina barns coming home from Louisville. Amazing talent right here with trainers, riders, horses and ponies bringing home many blues. DCF is very proud to call these barns our friends.

Are you ready for watusi cuteness overload????

Please meet snowman and big red!

Have a great week. Temperatures here in the Carolina’s are supposed to be much cooler this week.

Good morning from Drowning Creek Farm. We hope everyone had a wonderful week. From all of us at the farm we wanted to wish the best of luck to all of the Carolina barns competing at the World Championship Horse Show in Louisville this week. So many talented trainers, riders, ponies and horses right here in the Carolina’s. Also, our amazing friends from Carosel Farms in West Virgina are competing at the show. Casey and Leigh Surface, we know you will do amazing things at the show. Enjoy your time and looking forward to seeing the joy and excitement Louisville brings to you. One of the best memories from DCF was when Mrs Pauline Eckard earned her moment on the green shavings with the very talented pony Centerfold. She had on her beautiful red dress and Centerfold wowed the crowd that night in Louisville. We know that Nana and Centerfold are having the time of their life in heaven looking down on the Eckard family and the legacy DCF has created. What an amazing night she had and one we cherish deeply in our hearts forever at DCF. From all of us at DCF, we hope you have a great week. Be kind to others and good things will always come your way.
