Today is Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day
Today is Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day.
Pets can have birth defects similar to us humans. They can be caused by genetics, breed-related conditions, infection, toxins, or trauma.
Some common defects are cleft palate, limb deformities, deformities of the eyes, nose, and palate, heart defects, hernias, retained testicles, and liver shunts are a few. Some defects can be fixed surgically or with medicine. Most pets who have birth defects can live a full life.
My own cat, Divot, has a few birth defects. When he was found, and I took him in, he just had slits where his eyes should have been. He had a double enucleation surgery to remove both eyes. The eye tissue that was there was underdeveloped, so it was removed, and his eyelids sutured shut. He gets around with no problem in the house unless you move a chair out or leave a cabinet door open! We also recently found out he has Polycystic Kidney Disease. It was an incidental finding while ultrasounding his bladder to check for stones.

Scratchboard training
Did you know I offer training sessions? I will sometimes recommend using a scratchboard for your dog if they are anxious about getting their nails trimmed. Hazel was very anxious about her front paws being touched, so I recommended a scratchboard and did a few training sessions with her to get her introduced to one. She caught on in one session!
If your dog doesn't like their nails trimmed, try a scratchboard. You can always call or message me to help with a training plan as well.
