Trying to take pictures of super wiggly, almost 5 week old puppies, is quite the task! We gave up trying to get some cute candid pictures and just had to hold them because, as you can see, they never stop moving!

Meet ChewBecca! She might be the littlest one of the bunch but she’s also the mightiest! A few hours after her and her siblings joined the world she was showing off her dance moves by crawling all over everyone in the puppy pile! 🐶

Currently ChewBecca’s favorite place to sleep is in the hooman’s shirts. Some might say she’s a little spoiled but we disagree…she’s actually VERY spoiled! 🥰

The puppies are almost 4 weeks and they love to run and play throughout the day! The best part about playing hard is that you get to nap immediately after! 😴

Uncle William Catner is patiently waiting for the puppies to be big enough for him to play with! So far just one of the nuggets is walking, but sea-legs are very real for her and she gets tired quickly, so no playing is done right now.

William said that he’s a little disappointed that he still has to wait about another week or so, but when the time comes he’ll definitely be ready!

Topic of discussion: Kennel Training

Just like the saying “there’s a hundred ways to skin a cat”, everyone has their own ways and opinions of raising their dogs, just like they do children. There is no universal way to do these things and what works for one isn’t always going to work for the other.

Many people have a misconception of what kennel training is. They think kennels are “cages” and are used as a form of punishment. For our dogs, their kennels are their safe space, and they are taught this from a very young age. If you look closely you can see Vicki on the far left, sound asleep, with her kennel door wide open.

There are a multitude of reasons why people choose to kennel their dogs. With us having 12 dogs, there’s bound to be a few that just don’t get along, so we use kennels to keep everyone safe. Most can stay outside together with no problems, but for those who can’t cross paths without confrontation, we have to rotate dogs in and out and keep them safely in a kennel until everyone is settled.

Living in Oklahoma tends to come with unpredictable spring storms, very cold winters, and very hot summers. While a little rain and sunshine never hurt anyone, we are just not ok with keeping them outside it extreme temperatures, so we will bring everyone indoors during those times. Also, with both of us working outside of the home, kennels help to prevent any potty accidents from happening and furniture from being destroyed.

If you are just starting on your puppy adventure and you are looking into kennel training, here are a few beginner tips:

•Size Matters•

Find a kennel that isn’t too small and that they can stand up and fully turn around in, but nothing too big as that can make them feel unsafe. Depending on how big your dog will be when fully grown, you might have to increase the size of the kennel if they outgrow the first one.

•Baby Steps•

Start by having your puppy go into a kennel a few times a day for 10-15 minutes each time. After a couple of days you can increase the time by 10-15 minutes. This gives your puppy the understanding that they will not be in there forever and you will eventually let them out!

•Make It Their Safe Space•

Dogs are den creatures by nature. You can help them feel safe by covering the sides and top of the kennel but leave the front door uncovered. If your dog seems to be a little agitated or anxious at first you and put a small fan in front of the door to help with air flow and to keep them cool. You could also put a a comfy dog bed, a blanket, or a cooling mat inside for them to lie on.

•Kennels Are Not Punishment•

Kenneling should be a positive experience! In order to keep your dog happy and willing to go into their kennel you should make it fun. Give them their favorite toy to take into the kennel with them or give them a small treat upon kennel door closure. Also, use a key word like “kennel” when they go in so they get used to associating the word with the place. Eventually all you’ll have to do is say the key word and they will go to it with ease!
