Hello there! My name is B. James Woods, but you can call me James.

I’ve been selected to be South Paws Doggie Daycare’s new General Manager! I have previously led and managed in multiple doggie daycares and I'm excited to be adding my experience and skills to South Paws’ already impressive team.

In addition to being a professional member of The Pet Professional Guild, I’m also a Force-Free Certified Professional Dog Trainer with a specialization in rehabilitating fearful and aggressive dogs.

My Year One Goal for South Paws is to dynamically improve the fun and satisfaction our clients' dogs get at our daycare! To do this, we’ll add more electives and alternative enrichment opportunities that match each dogs' individual drives and needs.

I look forward to meeting you all and the amazing dogs of South Paws!

“Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems."

The new position statement on humane dog training is out from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior and it is clear that all dog training and behaviour modification should use reward-based methods, with "no exceptions".

When a Rottweilers has a bite force of 230 pounds per square inch, I'm not gonna wrestle and hope they decide to not snap my literal bones in half when I'm grooming them.

The final modifications have been made to the logo and now I'm just waiting for the illustrator files! This was a very fun creative process I was very excited to take part in.

I want to thank everyone who offered their time and energy to help assist me through this process. Your ideas were absolutely taken into consideration.

The website is tentatively updated as well so feel free to poke around and see what you think! There will be some small adjustments made to it but the overall flow has been finalized.

"When educated canine behavior professionals continuously cry out that dogs needs aren’t being met, that we aren’t addressing their emotional welfare and that we need to prioritize that it is labeled as “radical” or “extreme” and often times completely dismissed as if it were witchcraft. For years, many of us have felt the pushback, the need and want for dogs to neatly fit into our clients lives and for us “trainers” to do our job.

We witness extreme responses and approaches in order to obtain compliance from dogs ranging from electronic devices strapped around their necks to outright brute abuse. Yet, the majority of society doesn’t seem to think this is extreme based on likes and follows. "

We must choose to heal our dogs with only evidence - supported and peer - reviewed approaches that avoid utilizing harm to intimidate the dog into a more preferred response. We can and we must.

Here is an initial evaluation I recently completed FOR FREE that I was granted permission to post for public review.

"My initial assessment is, assuming your veterinarian eliminates Pica or dental pain as a leading cause, that ###X is most likely displaying normal puppy behaviors that have led to experimental chewing and play aggression that may now be developing into hyper-arousal and/or conflict/impulse control aggression.

I suggest a short-term and long-term confinement area for managing and eliminating access to triggering stimuli, while we develop healthier behaviors to address ###X's needs. As a priority, I advise that we must first significantly reduce or eliminate the excessive biting behavior, and then immediately facilitate proper socialization before the human socialization development window closes around 16 weeks of age.

After that, a focus on cooperative exercise, chew-toy reinforcement, desensitization to handling, leash manners, and impulse control will be vital to long term success."
