Bird has been tested and is negative. Please take advantage of this free testing

We have recently been made aware by owners and breeders about Marsh Tackies testing positive or showing symptoms of a genetic disease known as PSSM1. PSSM1 affects how horses process starches and sugars in their diet, which in turn affects how their muscles function. This can cause episodes of muscle stiffness and pain after exercise, also known as “tying up.” Affected horses may be reluctant to move and may display sweating, lameness and muscle tremors. Affected horses may have less severe symptoms, while other affected horses may be asymptomatic and never have any issues. While this is a serious disease, it is treatable.

The first step in treatment is early diagnosis through genetic testing. The single PSSM1 test is $40. The Carolina Marsh Tacky Association has allocated $2,000 to help CMTA members pay for the single test if provided with the required hair sample from the horse. The Association will send the sample in for testing and will be privy to the results of those tests. The results, however, will ONLY be shared with the horse owner. Priority will be given to CMTA members’ breeding stock and horses that have produced offspring.

We will be sending all CMTA members more information about the disease and why it is important to maintain the health of the Marsh Tacky breed. Please check out the links below for more information about PSSM1.

Earlier this year, the CMTA board introduced a proposal for a revised CMTA Logo. All active adult members were sent voting cards which were due by April 20. We received exactly 80 cards back accounting for a 50% participation rate. We greatly appreciate everyone who took the time to cast their vote.

The results were 48 for the new proposed logo and 32 for the original logo. These results were announced at the 2023 CMTA Annual Meeting held at Broxton Bridge on May 6.
