Recently we have had a couple of people getting in touch thinking that what we do is similar to some of the viral animal manipulation videos doing the rounds.

Chiropractic for animals should be joint specific and very quick which lessens the force required to deliver the necessary adjustment (I.e. high velocity, low amplitude). The art of chiropractic is finding the joint(s) restricted and using an adjustment to re-initiate optimal motion thereby improving the neurology and motion.

When your animal attends the clinic or we visit your horse, time is taken to make sure they're happy and content to be examined and treated. Watching adjustments is often relatively dull and minimal.

Videos showing fore limb leg separations and massive jerking movements or extreme animal reactions is not chiropractic.

*The post says: “can” look boring. Chiropractic to me is an art where it’s as specific as possible with as much speed as possible which reduces force as much as possible. You don’t have to agree but I won’t tolerate abusive private messages.

Dr. Z just got back from a trip with Veterinarians for Puerto Rico to Ponce, Puerto Rico - where this amazing group of vets, techs, students, and assistants spayed and neutered 859 dogs and cats in 3 days! It was so special to be part of a huge group of people all working tirelessly together to help the animals!

While most of her time is now spent practicing integrative medicine, Dr. Zap is no stranger to surgery, and has volunteered with HQHVSN (high-quality-high-volume spay/neuter) projects since 2007!

Please check out and follow all the great work they are doing to help the animals of Puerto Rico!

Have you been waiting longer than usual for an open appointment with your veterinarian or been unable to access after-hours services for your horse? The shortage of equine veterinarians in the U.S. is likely the cause. Many veterinary practices have too few horse doctors to service all their clients.

Why? Only about 6% of new veterinary graduates annually enter equine practice. After five years, 50% of these young veterinarians leave for small animal practice or quit veterinary medicine altogether. The primary reasons are the personal demands of the profession and equine practice’s lower starting salaries. Many new veterinarians begin their career with more than $200,000 in student loan debt, making an equine position with lower compensation often unthinkable. When financial concerns are combined with the always present demands of emergency coverage, many equine veterinarians choose to leave for a healthier way of life.

The good news is that the AAEP along with private veterinary practices and veterinary schools are addressing the pain points which have led to the current crisis. But the solution is complex and will require the support and collaboration of every person in the equine industry — including horse owners. As we work to improve the profession for current and future veterinarians, you have a huge role to play in the much-needed transformation of equine practice. Horse doctors look forward to working together with you for the good of the horse and the sustainability of veterinary care!

Dr. Zap has added a few more letters after her name! Please join us in congradulating Dr. Z and her colleagues for passing their Equine Medical Manipulation final exams this past weekend in Florida! 👏🎉🥳

Dr. Zap just finished an amazing spay/neuter campaign with World Vets, the PNG and ABG on San Cristóbal Island in the Galapagos! Over 200 dogs and cats were sterilized and treated for parasites during the 3 day campaign, and numerous pets were treated for skin wounds, tumors, and even pyometras! Thank you to World Vets for organizing such an amazing campaign and to all the volunteers for their support! By spaying and neutering, the dog and cat population of the Galapagos will be reduced, and be less of a threat to the endangered endemic species, such as the giant tortoises and sea lions. Great job team! 🥰🐢

This week is the 2022 advanced equine acupuncture seminar at in Florida

This is one of my favorite statues at Chi ☯️ It depicts pulse diagnosis - one of the 4 pillars of diagnosis in traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM)

In Western medicine, the pulse is used to measure heart rate, but in TCVM, it tells us so much more about the state of balance of the body as a whole (the state of Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang). This ancient tool is still extremely valuable to TCVM veterinarians today, and I use it on a regular basis as part of an exam for ALL patients (not just horses! 🐎)

Guess My Breed!!! 🐾

Dr. Zap’s new puppy Enzo was gifted a DNA kit by the great folks at Wisdom Panel and while we await the results, let’s see who can most accurately guess Enzo’s breed(s)!!

We are secretly hoping for pit bull because they are some of our favorite dogs (and we know Enzo’s mom and she looks like a red nose pit ❤️)... but who knows! It will be so interesting to find out what’s behind tiny Enzo’s genetic code 🧬

Any guesses?? Have you ever done a DNA test on your dog? Let us know!
