Cats are naturally curious and notorious for their ability to sneak into places where they may not be wanted. There are many tales of cats being shut under floorboards, into attics, garages, or getting accidentally locked in a neighbor’s shed. This can have dire consequences, as lack of water can cause dehydration. Older cats are particularly vulnerable because ageing kidneys mean that dehydration occurs rapidly. Keep an eye on your kitty and make sure to keep spaces that may be inviting but dangerous, off limits.

A cat’s whiskers are a type of hair with a deeper follicle root, and even hairless cats have whiskers. They serve an important purpose for hunting animals by alerting the cat to the location of prey by sensing air currents created by movement.

Cats typically spend about a third of their waking hours grooming. It serves to regulate body temperature and increase blood flow, and also helps kitty relax.

Cats have secondary smell organ that allows them to “taste” scents in the air. Called the vomeronasal organ, it’s located between the cat’s nostrils and the roof of the mouth. It’s what gives them the ability to “taste smells.” The organ makes it possible for cats to detect smells that humans can’t.

Cats know to use a litter box instinctively. In the wild, cats have always covered their waste to mask the scent and avoid detection by predators.

Contrary to popular belief, cats aren’t nocturnal; they are crepuscular, or most active around dusk and dawn. Because of this, those are also the times a cat is most likely to ask for food.

Your cat (almost) always land on his feet because of a “righting reflex” that allows him to twist his body in the air and spin his tail to position his feet under him before landing. In addition, your kitty’s springy, rear-facing legs are designed to absorb impact.

Cats are partially colorblind and can see only a few of the colors that a human eye can detect. However, cats far surpass humans in their ability to see in low light. Although your kitty can’t see in total darkness, she only needs one-sixth of the light that you do to see clearly.

Don’t bother sharing your dessert. Cats are the only mammals who don't taste sweetness.

Cats can jump up to six times their length!

If you didn’t already know it, your kitty is a sprinter. The average house cat can run at speeds of 30 mph, but only for very short distances.
