Tugging is fantastic exercise to engage in with your dog that if done properly can facilitate core strenghtening and stability. However, if done incorrectly it can do more harm than good and lead to significant neck and shoulder issues down the road. When tugging, the dogs head should always be in line with the rest of the topline or slightly below, and all 4 feet should be on the ground at all times. Notice how Inspire lets go when I put her neck into hyperextension. Tugging with a dog with their neck up at where your arms fall (depending on the dog) creates neck hyperextension, increased stress on shoulder and neck muscles and increased pressure on the lower lumbar SI joint instead of muscle to counterbalance. Inspire is the first puppy I’ve trained from day 1 to be rewarded for proper tug positioning only, and now 2 years later, she has the body awareness to feel the difference and let go without a command. This is why I love long tugs so much because not only do they decrease the incidence of incorrect tugging, they also save the owners lower back!!

Gorgeous day working on riders and horses at Baymar’s show today with our adorable mascot Marshall in tow. Jaden even got to do the leadline class, thank you Mr. Roo for being a saint of a horse. Realized today Jaden and I look the same when I try to sit the canter😂.

Jaden also learned that even when we don’t win at something we try hard at, it’s still not okay to strip down to our underwear and throw ourself on the ground ringside while screaming you’re never ever EVER riding again because your ribbon isn’t blue and you didn’t get a trophy.
Or you wait to do it when you get home and no one else is watching😂😂

Really fun day working at the dressage show at sussex fairgrounds and getting to watch ringside while I treated so many talented riders and horses. Thank you Sally Wiley and Windy Hollow Hunt for trusting a NJ newbie and having me come as a vendor!!

and clearly it was a rough time for my toddler and grass puppy: getting to eat and nap while Mom worked treating riders and horses in the heat and sun😆.

Think I was in a literal tornado that happened out of nowhere today in Bedford NY while working on horse barns. I’ve been in some pretty knarly storms but this one takes the cake. I watched the large heavy barn fans get blown and smash into the stable walls, trees come of the ground and come crashing down, and the scariest part of all was where I decided to crouch down in what looked like the most protected corner, a Tillage came smashing in with 60-70 mph winds and landed less than a foot from me. It’s crazy to think that had I been over just a few inches I probably wouldn’t be alive. What a reminder that life can literally change in moments. A few pics of the aftermath but I’m still shaking.

Not me ready to lay hands on the announcer after watching a Jr handle her clearly hot and nervous horse with such grace and poise in dressage and here him say “and that was Better than Expected” until I realized that was the horses name😂😂😂

Had so much fun working at my first horse event since moving to NJ a few weeks ago! Thank you Sara Schmitt Dressage for having me come be a vendor and to all the people that entrusted me to work on them and their horses, and correcting my horrible mispronunciation of fancy dressage terminology, 😂" I promise next time I will have finished unpacking and bring my actual professional sign too. Although I dunno this one sure got a lot of attention😂.

On a happier note, only 5 more days until Inspire and I leave for our Europe trip! First a big trial at Laura Field's, then I present at a physio conference about dry needing, then head up to EOJ and then to Denmark for EO!
