What to do if your pet eats Halloween candy

Halloween is almost here!! This holiday is a fun time for for our kids...both the two and four legged ones 😂, but please be careful! Our furry ones can often be sneaky and get into the Halloween candy. Please make sure to keep the candy in a safe place where your pets can’t sample a taste (or a whole bag 😆)!

If for some reason they are tricky and get into the candy, please seek veterinary attention immediately!

With Halloween being just around the corner, local veterinarians have some tips on what to do if your pet eats candy.

The Quality of Life Question We All Should Be Asking

This is a great article for everyone to read. I hope that by reading this, it may help someone feel peace in making this difficult decision for their pet.

In 2016, I lost my dachshund, Muggle, to Cognitive Dysfunction. This brain disease of “doggy Alzheimer’s” is one that steals not only our pets, but our own peace of mind. Just like in human medicine, we tend not to give brain diseases credit for being diseases. Even as a trained hospice veteri...

Happy Veterinary Technician’s Week!!! 🤗😸🐶

Veterinary technicians are an integral part of our profession and we could not be successful without their endless dedication!! As doctors, we rely heavily on their skills, expertise, attention to detail, patience, compassion, amongst many other amazing qualities. To quote a phenomenal colleague of mine, Dr. Carrie Jurney...

“When you ask me did your dog eat in the hospital? What food did he like? How was he on his walks? Did he do well under anesthesia? Can I get that prescription refilled? Can someone explain to me how to express his bladder? Fit this harness? And a million other things, I turn to my techs.

They are the life blood, the hands and feet of a veterinary hospital. We are a team, and we couldn’t do it without them.”

We so appreciate all that you do every day!! Thanks for all you do, day in and day out!!

From all of us at Florida Veterinary Neurology and Pet Emergency and Referral Center!!

Hello Everyone!! This is Scooter! He was presented to our hospital two weeks ago with severe neck pain due to several herniated discs. He had extensive surgery to remove the multiple disks in his neck that were pressing on his spinal cord. He came back today for his post surgery recheck examination and wanted to report to everybody that he is feeling wonderful!! We are so happy that you are feeling better Mr. Scooter!! 🤗🤗

Veterinary neurology alert: Bromethalin toxicosis on the rise in pets

I am reposting this as a reminder to all! Please make sure to keep all rodent poisons locked up and away from your children and pets!! Bromethalin is a common ingredient used in rodenticides these days and is very, very toxic to our little ones.

We recently treated a small dog who was presented to the hospital after ingesting 6 times the lethal dose!! We are very happy to report that after aggressive treatment, he survived and is doing well! He was very fortunate to have received treatment and have come through this, and is now happy and healthy! We want to try to make sure that this doesn't happen to any of your loved ones as many of those exposed to this poison do not survive! Please go home and take a look in and around your house and make sure that this and any other chemicals are not accessible to your children and/or pets!!!

EPA shift away from anticoagulant rodenticides means increased exposure to neurotoxin with no known antidote.

Cornell Feline Health Center

An instrument called a mouth gag is commonly used in cats that are anesthetized for surgical/dental procedures. This instrument is used to prevent the patient from biting down on the endotracheal tube that is passed down the cat's trachea to deliver anesthetic gas and to provide access to the cat's oral cavity.

It has recently been reported that some cats that undergo these procedures are blind, usually temporarily so, when they wake up from anesthesia. Until recently, the cause of this blindness was unclear, but a new study by Feline Health Center-funded Cornell researchers sheds light on the mechanism of this unfortunate phenomenon.

It turns out that the extreme opening of the mouth that is induced by the spring loaded mouth gag results in blockage of blood flow through the maxillary artery, a major supplier of blood to the brain and eye of cats.

This phenomenon can be seen in the CAT scan images of the heads of two anesthetized cats that have had their mouths briefly opened maximally below. The arrows indicate regions of blocked blood flow through the maxillary arteries, which appear as white linear structures (they have been highlighted by the use of an innocuous injectable contrast agent).

These cats did not experience any harm as a result of this study, but this research provides valuable information to veterinarians...information that can be directly applied in the hospital to prevent cats from becoming blind during oral surgical procedures. Further research is ongoing and will form the basis for recommendations designed to decrease the likelihood of post-procedure blindness in cats.

Stereotactic radiosurgery and SRT are effective treatments for reducing tumor volume, blood flow, and blood volume. Treated dogs surviving for more than 1 year are more likely to die from other causes than of their primary brain tumor. SRS and SRT should be considered for noninvasive treatment of intracranial brain tumors.
