Leash Reactivity Workshop
Yesterday’s leash reactivity session was a huge success! The pups were able to navigate their triggers, build their tolerance, check in with their guardians/handlers, and remain comfortable even with gradually decreased distance from humans and dogs.
Huge shoutout to Gabrielle of Best Life Dog Services and Brittany of BJ’s Sit N’ Stay for being my helpers for the workshop!
And a thank you to Sadie for helping at least one dog that has a positive relationship with her observe her reactions to environmental triggers he would have previously struggled with and deciding they weren’t a threat.
Great job all!
Happy Friday!
Enjoy this video of my little one watching a video of a client’s puppy with me 💕💕💕💕
“That’s a puppy!”
Have you updated your dog trainer lately?
Sometimes, you have to stop and smell the flowers 🌸
Walks with Opie used to involve a lot of pulling (it takes two to pull!) and they were no fun.
After making a few changes, we now have a lovely loose leash walk.
How we achieved this:
✅ increased the length of the leash we were using
✅ rewarded auto check ins (anytime he looks towards me) in low to now distractions first (in the house, in the backyard, then on the walk) by marking and giving TREATS and praise
✅ using a touch/hand target when needed
✅ taught the cue “with me” and rewarded by marking and giving treats and praise if he was at or near my side
✅ let the slack out when he wanted to sniff! LET THEM SNIFF!
✅ a well fitted 3 in 1 harness by @petsafe
✅ patience
What we didn’t use:
❎ leash corrections
❎ prong, pinch, or other punitive collars
❎ electronic collars
❎ verbal corrections
