Can cats eat pumpkin?

Yes they can! Not only is it full of vitamins like vitamin C and potassium, this festive food is packed with soluble fiber that can help with constipation by absorbing excess moisture in the digestive tract. Fiber can help with diarrhea by adding bulk to stool. Pumpkin can also help move hairballs through the digestive tract.

Change up your pet's diet with some seasonal, biologically appropriate foods!

We all know pumpkin can be great for tummy upset. Low in calories and high in soluble fiber, pumpkin helps maintain a healthy digestive tract and can ease digestive discomfort.

But did you know pumpkin is a great antioxidant? It is low in sodium and exceptionally high in carotenoids, potassium and vitamin C, and has some calcium and B vitamins.

Most grocery stores carry canned pumpkin year round, but be sure that it's pure, BPA free and not a pie filling, which typically has sugar and/or spices added.

For some fresh, seasonal veggies, try cooking up your dog some winter squash or sweet potato for similar benefits.

One minute, they're puppies, and the next, they are getting grey muzzles and slowing down. As your dog ages and their body changes, so do their nutritional requirements. Yet there’s no AAFCO statement for senior dog food. As more and more companies are making specialty senior dog food, it can get confusing to navigate.

When considering a diet for your dog, keep in mind the following:

High-quality protein: Protein has been the center of confusion when it comes to feeding older dogs. While low-protein diets used to be recommended for seniors—with the thought being that high amounts of protein can overtax the kidneys—now the opposite is known to be true. High-quality, easily digestible protein is key.

Low sodium: Dogs have an increased risk of heart disease, so a lower sodium diet is best.

Antioxidants: Antioxidants and essential fatty acids like omega 3 and 6 are an older dog’s best friend, because they reduce inflammation, help slow down cellular aging, and can prevent diseases like cancer.
