Did you know some of our favorite holiday plants can also be dangerous for our cats? See slide 2 for safe holiday plants. 💙

Poinsettias: Mildly toxic. Can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach, leading to drooling or vomiting if ingested.

Lilies: Highly toxic! Even a small amount (including pollen or water from a vase) can cause severe kidney failure.

Holly: Berries and leaves can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy if eaten.

Mistletoe: Can lead to digestive upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and even more severe symptoms like difficulty breathing and a slowed heart rate.

Amaryllis: Contains toxins that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and tremors.

Christmas Trees (Pine, Spruce, or Fir): While the tree itself isn’t highly toxic, needles can cause irritation to the stomach or intestines if ingested. Tree water, often containing preservatives or fertilizers, can also be harmful.

Ivy: Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain if consumed.

Ever wonder why your cats tongue is so rough?

Cats have rough tongues primarily due to tiny, hook-like structures called papillae. These papillae are made of keratin, the same material found in human nails. Their rough texture serves several important purposes:

Grooming: Cats use their tongues to clean themselves. The rough surface helps remove dirt, loose fur, and parasites from their coats.

Eating: The texture of their tongues aids in drinking and eating. When cats lap up water, the papillae help them scoop and draw liquid into their mouths. The roughness also allows them to scrape meat off bones.

Thermoregulation: Grooming helps cats regulate their body temperature, as the saliva evaporates from their fur.

Can cats eat pumpkin?

Yes they can! Not only is it full of vitamins like vitamin C and potassium, this festive food is packed with soluble fiber that can help with constipation by absorbing excess moisture in the digestive tract. Fiber can help with diarrhea by adding bulk to stool. Pumpkin can also help move hairballs through the digestive tract.

Change up your pet's diet with some seasonal, biologically appropriate foods!

We all know pumpkin can be great for tummy upset. Low in calories and high in soluble fiber, pumpkin helps maintain a healthy digestive tract and can ease digestive discomfort.

But did you know pumpkin is a great antioxidant? It is low in sodium and exceptionally high in carotenoids, potassium and vitamin C, and has some calcium and B vitamins.

Most grocery stores carry canned pumpkin year round, but be sure that it's pure, BPA free and not a pie filling, which typically has sugar and/or spices added.

For some fresh, seasonal veggies, try cooking up your dog some winter squash or sweet potato for similar benefits.
