When we first learned about Pepper this past week, we were told that she needed a new home because they had a new baby who had developed allergies to her and now Pepper was spending a majority of the time in the backyard. After talking further with the owner though and then the vet, we found out that she had been to the vet the day prior, had a 105 degree fever and had been lethargic and not eating much for the last several days. Alert bells went off for us and we were very concerned that she may have pyometra, a medical issue that needs to be addressed immediately or the possibility of the dog not making it is a reality. We scurried around trying to make plans to get her to the vet that morning, however, the owners were at work and there was no access to Pepper during that time. We had the owner surrender her over to the rescue so we could pay for her vetting and he agreed to get her to the vet when he got home that night. It turns out that it wasn’t pyometra, much to our relief, but rather a massive infection in her mouth/tooth. The vet drained a lot of fluid at the visit and put her on heavy antibiotics and pain medicine. We still wanted to get her moved into a new home as soon as possible but also wanted it to be the right home. We had several caring people offer to help. Once we felt we had the ideal home for Pepper, we had to decide what to do in the interim because her new family could not get her until this morning. We had several discussions behind the scenes, going back and forth between moving her temporarily for a few days or having her stay in the home she has always known until Sunday. We spoke with the owner who agreed to keep her inside and give her all her meds until Sunday. We felt that it would be less stressful on Pepper to have her stay there until today. We checked in with the owner every day. Today, we are happy to say, Pepper went to her new home. It is starting out as a foster but if all goes as we hope it does, she will be adopted. Pepper’s new family lost their beloved bull terrier Polly this past August. They live pretty close to where Pepper was located and we all feel that things played out the way they did to bring Pepper and this particular family together. Pepper will be joined by her pawrents, Nikki and David, and teenage siblings Bridget and Danielle. She will get all her medical needs addressed. She will receive all the attention she failed to get over the last several months since the baby came home in her previous home. She will have a big fenced in yard to run around in. She will go on lots of walks. Most importantly though, she will go back to being an included member of a family.
Special thanks to all those who offered to help immediately after seeing the initial post on Pepper and to her new family for welcoming her in with open arms and hearts.
