Foxy's Cradle We are a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, in home neonatal nursery providing around the clock care. Intakes must be approved and scheduled. We do intakes 24/7.
(19)

We are a foster based neonate rescue, with NO PUBLIC LOCATION/PHYSICAL ADDRESS. Due to the delicate nature of the kittens within our care, we DO NOT have open to the public hours. We host educational and fundraising events once a month in our mobile unit and all events will be posted on the event portion of this page. Intakes: Please TEXT the following information to 6106061885: A picture

of the kitten found, location kitten was found, number of kittens found, any health concerns visible, what steps were taken to confirm abandonment. Details on intake will be discussed directly on a case by case basis. All intakes are held within Laurys Station or Whitehall, please be prepared to keep the kittens warm while transporting to our area. We do request a surrender donation at the time of intake to offset the cost of care for each kitten. The township does NOT allow intakes to take place at the original nursery location. Any kitten left at this location will be considered abandoned and the person responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for animal abandonment/cruelty. Adoption information: An approved application must be received prior to scheduling a meet n greet with an adoptable kitten. Applications can be found online, www.foxyscradle.com. Once approved you will be contacted and a meet n greet will be scheduled at a convenient time for everybody involved in the mobile unit. Item Donations: Our shipping address is 5260 Overlook Road, Coplay, PA 18037. The township does NOT allow item donations to be directly dropped off to the same address. Pinned to the top of our page you will find a list of local small businesses who graciously support our rescue efforts by allowing supply donations to be made at their businesses. If you have a large amount, perishable items, gift cards, or monetary donations, please text 610-606-1885 to arrange for a volunteer to pickup at an agreed upon location. Volunteering Information: Applications can be found online, www.foxyscradle.com. Please follow up by texting 6106061885 to schedule an orientation and to speak further in detail. We are always looking for volunteers to help with the mobile unit, community events, and fundraising events, as well as kitten fosters for all ages. We are NOT a vet clinic. Our team has many years of experience caring for neonates, but we rely heavily on our vet partners. If you found a kitten requiring emergency care, please bring it to your nearest emergency vet immediately.

A day revolving around kids who happen to love kittens (and their parents)! Our mobile unit will be visiting Nine Lives Thrift Store in Coopersburg with a team of our volunteers experienced in hosting our youth events! At the top of every hour, our volunteers will hold mini educational lesson teaching our kids about compassion towards animals, and the kids will be able to explore our mobile unit (under the supervision of their parent/guardian), hold, play, and interact with our crew of adoptable kittens! Lots of goodies, freebies, toys, and fun cat themed things for the kids to take home, while Nine Lives Thrift Store has lots of goodies for parents to explore! An incubator will be on site to show and demonstrate bottle feeding and newborn kitten care, and each bottle feeding session a well behaved child (or small group) will be chosen to feed a kitten while guided by Kandice.

This is a rain or shine event being held outside under the covered patio.

Today a foster and transport volunteer, Julie, gave a critical Freedom Ride to this crew of nursing moms, orphans, and one sweet orange female who gives high fives amd needs a safe place to heal from a severe wound to her neck. Thank you for all you do Julie!

(She had a little excitement on her journey when a kitten chewed through her cardboard carrier. Luckily she was super sweet, though covered in poo! Julie was quite a good sport by completing the drive, then making a stop to clean herself and her car up before heading back to Philly! 😬)

Please join me in giving her a huge thank you today!! It wasn’t an easy trip!! Never a dull moment when dealing with these guys. Because of her, this crew is safe and our friends at ACCT have a few open kennels. Thank you Julie!!

Little baby toe beans aren’t supposed to look like this. These 3 joined us as a transfer in from a rescue partner. They do not do bottle babies, they primarily do dogs, but when they received this litter, they recognized their urgent condition, and took them in to keep them safe.

They arrived to us with their feet so packed with filth, maggots had began eating between their toes. Many of their toes are swollen to exponential sizes from infection. Open wounds cover their tails. We are slowly soaking them (as much as they’ll tolerate), in efforts to clean them thoroughly. The pictures below are after initial soaking rounds. Still a ways to go.

They’re on the road to recovery, but where is the mom? We’ll never know. Sadly whoever kept these kittens kept them in horrific conditions and I can only imagine the mom remains in that situation, or she passed away. These babies are well fed, wherever mama is, she did a wonderful job nursing them. Their coats are clean, she was up against disgusting living conditions which is why these babies have horrible, cruel, wounds to their feet and tail. If you know where these kittens came from, or where the mom is, I’ll welcome the mom to safety. Mom doesn’t deserve to be left in this condition.

Such a sad and horrible start for these little ones, but I’m glad they’re safe now.

Welcome little ones.

Many of you have been noticing a trend the last few weeks
it’s not a good trend either. Maggots.

Every. Day. For. 3. Weeks. Straight

We had maggot babies brought to us for help.

Sadly this is the summertime reality and the cause for SO much suffering. Maggots will eat kittens alive and their toxins they release make trying to save the kittens 10x harder than just wound care. We try to save the ones caught before extreme damage has resulted, we have a strong and effective treatment in place that proves excellent results, and the babies who weren’t found in time, several wonderful vets help us give those babies the gift of peace and an end to their extreme suffering.

One of the products we use in our treatment is feline capstar. Yes, it is a flea product. It also is a critical life saving piece to the maggot puzzle. Off label, when used and dosed correctly, kills maggots. It’s available without a prescription on chewy, Amazon, pet stores, etc. We need to split the pills and crush it in some cases, which is what you see on the plate. What you see on the plate is all we have left in our nursery program. If anybody has it in their hearts to send a box or 2 our way, the little ones trying to fight through this horrific maggot battle would be SO thankful.

These 3 arrived in the middle of the night last night from Larksville. Fly eggs covered them and JUST started to turn to maggots. 2 had maggots on their backend, the third had them in his eyes. Very minimal so we feel we can save the babies, unsure if we can save the eyes on the one or not yet.

Here’s the Amazon link below, it’s 10% off today!

Our shipping address is 5260 Overlook Rd, Coplay PA 18037.

Thank you so, so much. Also, these babies arrived without an accompanying donation, but due to maggots we couldn’t turn them away and let them suffer. If you’d like to help towards their care, it would be a huge help. Thank you!

The last few days have been very challenging. I’m going to focus this post on the wonderful people involved with this latest batch of intakes. Introducing our latest crew!

1. A singleton was left behind at a PennDOT yard in Nescopek. The mom was known to the employees with her litter. One day everybody was gone except for this one. They left him there for a full day. The next morning when employees arrived to work and found the baby still there, they called for rescue.

2. 2 little guys were found in Lehighton, 1 had holes in his neck. These are a little older than what we accept. An exception was made due to the neck injuries and the fact that it was a middle of the night call and they needed urgent help.

3. 3 babies were found in Hallstead, just by the NY border, behind some old tires. When the cries were followed, a dead kitten was found with 3 survivors. The finders fed them through the night and made the 2 hour drive each way to bring them to rescue.

4. A man from Allentown had a mom give birth to a single little one at his feeding station and wanted nothing to do with it. This little guy is underweight, but otherwise doing great. The always reliable Cindy M. has promised to ensure mom will be trapped, spayed, and returned. Thank you Cindy!

5. A woman walking her dog found a very sick single kitten in Bethlehem. This kittens backend had a high number of maggots, the baby was grimly sick with an upper respiratory infection that caused severely infected eyes, he had white gums and very low body temperature. He was brought to Dr Urban at Rush Urgent Vet where he was humanely euthanized. This kitten was suffering immensely and we are grateful to the finder who tried so hard to help him, and to Rush for bringing him peace.

6. A litter of 5 kittens, approx 2 weeks old, were found in the landscaping at the Promenade shops tonight by an employee of a business there. 3 were already deceased upon finding them. 2 hung on to life for 3 hours longer until they also passed away. Sadly it is believed they had a mom, the mom is believed to have been the mom that was taken deliberately by somebody who refused to release her so she could return to her kittens. This case is still ongoing, several rescues are working together on this, and more will be posted once more is known.

I’ll focus on the wonderful finders, the people who went above and beyond, out of their way, drove 180 miles round trip, called 20 rescues determined to find one to help, put their job on the line to get the babies to rescue, the team at Rush, Cindy for trapping efforts, there’s SO many good people behind these babies arriving to rescue. Thank you all.

I wish peace for the 7 babies lost. Run free little ones. No more suffering. 🧡

Meet Simba! Simba came to join us last week from our friends at ACCT Philly. He has a nasty Staph infection which is causing abscesses to form on his limbs. As soon as one limbs swelling decreases, the next limb massively swells. We finally have seen significant improvements in him after a change in treatment occurred on Tuesday. We are being advised his one front limb may likely not be saved, we are fighting like hell alongside of him to prevent others from following the same path. Simba is a super sweet boy, about 2 months old, who through no fault of his own has already experienced significant physical pain, dangerously high fevers, and now he’s living what should be his most playful kitten days, he’s living those days in a kennel on bed rest. But!!! He escaped his timestamp and he’s in safe hands at one of our medical fosters. He’s stolen the heart of his foster mom and although he is still day by day, and fighting the fight no kitten should need to take on, he’s in great spirits. Today was the first day his foster reported significant improvements, so we feel confident to share our boy Simba with you.

Please join me in welcoming our sweet Simba!

If you’d like to contribute towards his care, we all would be extremely grateful! We are unsure what his care will entail each week, but for now it is physical therapy, several antibiotics, and pain medication. He likely will have an amputation in his future for his front right leg, and we are trying our hardest to save the back left. Any funds raised on this post will be allocated towards Simbas care. Thank you!!

If you’d like send Simba a care package, he looooooves Tiki Cat baby thrive, Sheba turkey pate, and fancy feast gravy lovers.

Not every kitten needs rescuing! How do you know if a kitten needs rescuing or if that kitten needs to be left alone?

Kittens show up at random places, at random times, this is normal! Mom cats relocate litters all the time. It is normal for mom to drop one and return for it eventually. Just because a kitten is found alone, doesn’t mean they need to be assisted.

1. Assess the scenario. Is the kitten in a safe location? Is it in the middle of the road or is it on your porch or under a bush? Are there dogs wanting to snack on it, or is it lying peacefully away from predators? Is it directly exposed to the elements or is it under a roof or other form of protection from weather? If kitten is protected in a quiet or safe area, it doesn’t need help. If kitten is exposed to the elements or is in a dangerous location, it needs help. Pictures are important.

2. Assess kittens condition. If the kitten is clean, has a plump belly, is quiet, it doesn’t need help. If the kitten has flies, maggots, bugs, wounds, injuries, looks sick, very skinny, sunken face, wrinkly skin on inner thigh, feels cold to touch, pale gums, it needs help. Pictures or video clips are very helpful.

3. DO NOT DISTURB kittens until you speak to a rescue or vet. Especially if you are unsure whether or not kittens need help. Leave them be, monitor from afar. A rescue or vet can guide you to your next step.

4. As long as the kittens aren’t in imminent danger, you likely will be instructed to give mom an opportunity to return. Mom cats need to eat to stay nourished so they CAN feed their kittens. Some moms leave for hours at a time, some moms rarely leave their litter, this is nature. A kitten can’t be declared orphaned unless it’s abandoned for at least 6-8 hours. (Some rescues will say 24 hours. I’ve seen far too many abandoned kittens perish from waiting this long, but this is why pictures are so critical and will guide rescues towards giving the appropriate wait time based on kittens condition and age). Some mom cats won’t return to the kitten if there’s any human movement in the area, so while you are waiting, please avoid the area. Monitor from inside or a far enough distance so your presence doesn’t scare mom into staying away longer.

***Kittens need their moms. They are born with an incredibly weak immune system, they rely on the ability to nurse to build their own immune system off their moms. As soon as a kitten no longer has access to nursing, their survival drops below 30%!***

5. 90% of the time if instructions are followed, mom will return to bring her kitten to where the rest of her nest is. This is the best possible outcome.

6. If all instructions are followed and mom still doesn’t return or kittens begin to show distress, arrange for rescue intake.

Newborn kittens have a hard enough time trying to survive even when with their mom. Please do not take mom away from them.

When kittens are taken from their moms, mom will fill with milk and have no kittens to nurse which will bring on infections, pain, lots of discomfort. Mom will frantically search for their kitten for a few days, then a new heat cycle will be triggered and the reproductive cycle will repeat even sooner than normal (with the overpopulation crisis this is the last thing we need). Removal of a kitten from the litter could bring on a stress response in mom, she could feel threatened, which could result in her harming, brutally eating her litter alive, or abandoning the remaining kittens.

When kittens are taken from their moms, kittens will cry nonstop a very distinct cry. This is them searching for their mom. It’s heartbreaking to hear. (This is the cry you want when using the kittens as bait to trap the mom). Kittens will refuse the bottle, they are used to nursing off their mom, they want their mom, not a bottle. We call this ni**le confusion. It takes sometimes 24-48 hours until the kitten accepts that mom isn’t returning and it gets hungry enough to stop fighting the bottle and the feeder trying to help it. Kittens can hold onto mom’s antibodies for 2 weeks maximum after their last nursing opportunity. This means a kitten apparently healthy upon intake has about a 12-14 period of seemingly healthy days only to face a devastating and quick decline right around the 2 week marker post intake. There are protocols in place at our rescue to minimize this crash, but it’s supplements and medications that otherwise would be unnecessary for that kitten if able to be with mom as long as they need to be.

People have good intentions when they prematurely take kittens, but it’s my hope with this post that it spreads awareness, education, to decrease the extreme number of kitten calls daily for snatched up kittens.

We have been made aware of several instances over the past few weeks of people claiming to be bottle feeders or affiliated with rescues—when they weren’t—just to gain access to newborn kittens. People use young kittens as reptile food, bait, and a plethora of other horrible things. Please don’t hand any young kitten, or any animal, to random people over the internet or social media. That polite, well dressed, single mom with young child looking for their families best friend, could hand that kitten over to a friend with a 10’ snake who needs a free dinner. People affiliated with rescues will be able to prove their rescue affiliation. Verify this. As soon as you take responsibility for helping that animal, please go the extra step to ensure it lands in the hands of a rescue.

The pictures shown below are of an intake. Although the finder had good intentions, our instructions were not followed. The mom was only given not even 2 hours to return before this kitten was removed permanently. This baby has been crying and searching for mom since arriving to foster, he’s refusing the bottle. If you look at his pictures, his backend is clean, he has no bugs, not even a flea. He has a plump round belly, no sign of dehydration, he was nursing very recently. Mom was likely relocating the litter and would have returned for him had she been given the chance to do so.

Not many rescues are able to provide care to babies. We ask lots of questions, try to see pictures, to best assess the situation and triage intakes based on urgency. It is difficult to keep bottle feeding fosters due to the high death rate and intensity of work expected of them. It is a 24/7 commitment that lasts for many weeks on end. Truly orphaned newborns are extremely difficult to raise. If a rescue or vet offers advice or instructions, there’s a reason they’re doing so. Please trust their instructions. You may not understand, but if they’re offering guidance, it’s likely because they have experience and knowledge and are trying to do what’s in the best interest of the entire kitten family.

Trust the process.

There are enough legitimately orphaned kittens. Please don’t make more.

Education is everything.

Our day of intakes. Here are their stories

A singleton was found in Pittston. The finder did her best to help the kittens eyes, but reached out when she felt the kitten needed more care than she was able to provide.

The LV Humane Society reached out with 3 newborns brought in. We are still awaiting details on their scenario, but we’re happy to help get these little ones to safety.

A worker found a litter of kittens at a job site in Leesport. The mom had passed away, as well as 1 kitten. The others were brought to a foster tonight and are doing well.

A litter was found at Deka by an employee. 1 had a laceration to its shoulder, 1 had a wound on its abdomen that had maggots actively destroying him, and the other 2 were apparently fine. The baby with maggots was humanely euthanized to prevent further suffering, too much damage was done to his abdomen. The baby with the shoulder wound has been cleaned up and is on the road to recovery.

Not pictured below is a litter of babies fighting for their lives after suspected poisoning. I didn’t share their picture and won’t share details for fear of giving the wrong person the wrong idea, but these babies are too small to willingly eat anything on their own, so the fact that this substance was found down their throats makes it apparent these babies were force fed this substance. The mother was found with the same substance from her mouth, 3 kittens have passed already, 3 remain fighting for their lives tonight. It takes an especially cruel hearted soul to force feed a helpless newborn kitten like this. While these 3 babies fight for their lives, I can only hope Karma will give this person responsible everything they deserve. The elderly woman who stumbled across this horrifically sad discovery when she went to feed her neighborhood cat colony this morning is understandably distraught tonight. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. UPDATE: all little ones from this litter passed overnight.

Thank you to everyone who went the extra mile to look out for the little ones on our recent intakes. Each of their hardest days are behind them. Our fosters are already showering them with love and care, and their best days are yet to come. We mourn the little ones lost, and are grateful for the survivors. Welcome little ones.

Who are we?

Thanks for checking our page out! I am sure by now you are wondering who exactly we are, and what exactly it is that we do. Here is our story!

Many years ago, I (Kandice) began fostering bottle baby kittens with an area shelter, Peaceable Kingdom, located in Whitehall, PA. I have raised many varieties of orphaned animals, many by bottle feeding, so when I contacted them as a potential new foster home, the bottle baby program is where they landed me. I immediately loved my role on the bottle baby kitten team. Although it has proven to be exhausting and extremely hard around the clock work, I could not imagine my life without my neonatal kittens in it.

Over the years my entire family has joined in on the care of the newborns within my home. Everybody helps care for them and it is a tremendous team effort. It was only a natural advancement after hundreds of bottle baby fosters, that we decided as a family to break away from Peaceable Kingdom and begin our own small rescue. Foxy’s Cradle was officially born.

In early 2019 a brand new nursery was built in my home to accommodate these little ones consisting of various areas. We have a quarantine area for new intakes and ill or high risk kittens. We have a mother/baby suite that caters to homeless moms with kittens who need a safe place to nurse and raise their young. We have the neonatal room which is temperature controlled and has the capability of housing up to 30 neonatal kittens in pods (cozy kennels). When they outgrow the pods, we have larger kennels to give them the safe feeling of a secure area, yet is large enough for them as they begin to play and exercise. The next step is the borderline running area, which allows them an area for free run in a kitten-proofed play area. This is the area where they will remain until they are completely weaned off of a bottle and able to join the large kitten room. The older kitten room is a wide open room filled with cat trees, hammocks, toys, and lots of fun things for the weaned and healthy kittens to explore. This is the last in the progression before the kittens are adopted and ready to go into your home!
