Apologies if this is slightly depressing.
No one will ever know how much hurt and sadness we feel each time one of our babies crosses the rainbow bridge. In rescue, our days are filled with ups and downs. We have moments that fill our hearts with joy and then, sometimes we have times of extreme devastation, all in a matter of moments. Life is LITERALLY a roller coaster for us. For animal rescue workers it’s about compassion fatigue. Dealing with an endless supply of tragic animal welfare stories and situations.
At 5.3 cases per 1 million, people involved in animal rescue have the highest su***de rate amongst all American workers. Compassion fatigue is a form of post-traumatic stress disorder.
