On the final day of our cold weather series, we bring you the Emperor Penguin!

Emperor Penguins can survive in the harshest of winter conditions. With their thick layer of blubber, tightly packed feathers, and incredible social structure, they huddle together to keep warm and protect each other from the brutal cold.

We'd like to introduce the Walrus for day 5 of our cold weather series!

Walruses are masters of cold survival–weighing in at over 1 ton! They rely on thick blubber for insulation, and they use their long tusks to pull themselves out of the cold water and across the ice.

What do you think tomorrow's animal will be?

Day 4 of our cold weather series brings us the Polar Bear!

Polar Bears are one of the largest bears in the world. They have black skin and transparent fur. Their oily fur coats repel excess water—which prevents them from becoming cold! Polar Bears use ice sheets for rest and travel.

Let us know...have you ever seen a Polar Bear?

On day 3 of our cold weather series, we'd like to introduce the Arctic Fox!

The Arctic Fox keeps it’s camouflage all year long. It’s white in the winter and brown or gray during the summer. The Arctic Fox has furrier toes, bushier tails, and a shorter snout and ears than other fox species, which helps them to stay warm. They can also endure frigid temperatures as low as negative 58 degrees Fahrenheit!

Day 2 of our cold weather animals is the Snowy Owl!

Snowy Owls are known for their beautiful white and black speckled feathers which provide great camouflage in snowy environments. Snowy Owls are actually the heaviest owls in North America—reaching a weight of about 4 pounds. This is due to their thick, insulating feathers, which keep them warm in the snow and cold weather.

Trivia question: There is a Snowy Owl in a really popular series of books and movies. Who can name that owl?

Since snow is in the forecast for North Alabama, we figured it would be a great time to learn more about animals that thrive in the cold weather! First up is the Snow Leopard.

Snow Leopards live in cold, mountainous environments. They are also known as “Ghosts of the Mountain” because their fur helps them to camouflage perfectly into the snow. Their thick fur and long tails keep them warm even in such frigid temperatures!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's cold weather animal!
