Ponies are amazing 💙 these days they sure do get to live an easier life!

Shetland ponies were indeed utilized in coal mines during the mid-1800s, after the prohibition of women and children working in such hazardous conditions. These ponies were specifically chosen for their strength in proportion to their size, enabling them to maneuver through the narrow underground tunnels. Horses and ponies were essential laborers in coal mines not only in England and Wales but also in Canada and the United States. In Canada, Nova Scotia was a key center for the coal industry, with the earliest mines established in the late 1700s on Cape Breton Island and at Pictou in Nova Scotia. Coal mining operations were also conducted systematically on Vancouver Island from the mid-1800s onwards.

The introduction of the railroad in the late 1800s led to the expansion of coal mining to the interior regions of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. It is worth noting that coal deposits were not discovered in Ontario or Quebec, which later became the industrial heartland of Canada. The contribution of horses and ponies to the mining sector remained significant until the late 1900s, prompting us to reflect on whether our Shetlands are aware of the hardworking nature of their ancestors.
