COLD WEATHER WARNING: BRING YOUR PETS INSIDE!
Just as you’ll protect yourself with a warm coat, hat, gloves and boots when you head outdoors, your pets will need the extra protection too! Though they may have furry coats, animals are by no means immune to dangerously cold temperatures. Even rabbits, cats, and dogs that typically live outdoors need extra assistance keeping warm as temperatures drop to alarming lows.
5 steps to keep animals safe during this cold weather warning:
1. Bring pets indoors
2. Bundle up your pup in a jacket or sweater and get booties to protect your dog's paw pads during their walk (to protect frost bite and hypothermia).
3. Before you start your engine, look under and pound on your vehicle’s hood to wake a napping cat trying to keep warm.
4. Never leave your pet alone inside your vehicle, which won’t stay warm for long after your engine has turned off.
5. If your pet MUST remain outdoors, make sure that are in a winter-friendly shelter that has the following components: three-sided enclosure, stands off the ground, contains generous amounts of hay/straw, and plenty of (un-frozen!) drinking water.
Replace hay/straw if it gets wet and water if it gets frozen!

On average, a dog excretes between 0.5 and 0.75 pounds of waste per day. One gram of dog waste contains about 23 million coliform bacteria, nearly twice the amount found in the equivalent amount of human waste. It is estimated that only about 60% of dog owners consistently pick up their pet’s poo – that leaves a heck of a lot of poo and pathogens lying around to get washed into our waters in the next rainstorm!

1. Dog p**p is not natural. It is rational to think that p**p is natural because we often see wildlife droppings outside. Wild animals eat nutrients from their existing ecosystem, so they are simply returning what is already there. Dogs, on the other hand, eat pet foods specifically designed to ensure a healthy diet. These pet foods can cause their p**p to contain excessive amounts of bacteria and nitrates that can upset the delicate balance of an existing outdoor ecosystem.


2. Dog p**p does not decompose. Dog waste will not fully break down on its own. It is logical to think that dog waste is compostable, but before dog f***s fully decomposes, it will get washed over by rainwater, causing it to get into land and water systems where it releases harmful nutrients that cause excessive growth of algae in lakes, streams and rivers. This type of pollution negatively impacts wildlife and humans.


3. Dog p**p contains disease causing bacteria and parasites. Dog waste contains bacteria and parasites that can contaminate water and soil and also be harmful to humans. Even if your dog does not show symptoms of being sick, their waste can carry diseases that are harmful to other animals and humans. Salmonella, E.coli and roundworms are a few of the diseases that can be found in dog p**p.
