During the summer months, our trim schedule will shift to accommodate the heat. We will start early at 730am and finish by 12pm, with no appointments in the afternoon. Alternatively, clients can choose to schedule evening appointments, available three times a week, starting at 5:30pm.

This time I wasn't messing around. .made me a face mask since i couldnt find one😂none of the horses disowned me and all are doing well considering I was sweating it was 75 yesterday,, slipped a few more blankets , on broke some thin layers of ice and well back inside to warm up for the night .
Also Keeping my car running with heater nearby really helped 😂 😭

Occasionally I am asked if I charge the same for minis as for horses. I remember once being asked if I charge less because I wasn’t able to trim all four feet (because the horse was so scared and tried to take my head off). Once I was even asked if the first trim for a foal would be free as per “tradition”. And I did trim it for free as it happens, but I still put diesel in my car to get there. It climbed all over me because the owner had never lifted a foot before the appointment, and broke my finger in the process. But if your horse is super nervous, and i come out to give him a scratch, pick up the hooves and give you some pointers on how to help him be more comfortable with hoofcare, you’re paying for my time, not by the hoof and it frustrates me that the question would ever come up. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll gladly help people out - but that’s at my discretion. When it’s expected, because the horse is tiny or he was terrified/needed seds/doesn’t have much growth, please don’t assume that the appointment will be cheaper. My education/insurance/tools/fuel/time/risk/car maintenance etc are covered by a flat rate.

kids picked out his hooves and saddled him and got on him all by themselves usually I help but told them they had to start doing it if they wanted to ride ...thy forgot the saddle pad ( don't worry he's chubby) and cinch strap was wrapped a tad wrong ot held thou .
I now have 3 horses to work every evening and more to trim every week it seems ..lol

All this weather is intrusive on good hoof care just do your part when it gets dry and treat for thrush I love the Verticyn Hoof care product for this ..Lil bit mud is good but too much moisture can create thrush And cracks!

This sweet teen mare is overdue but has a sulcus frog & heel bulb infection ..I didn't shoe her she was told upon purchase she was just reshod.😅😟

This mare could barely walk she was just had a abcess brewing and blowout her mom was soaking. She was just a Few weeks over due she has long pasterns and quickly grows hooves a 4-6 week schedule is important she doesn't get ridden anymore and lives on sand .

I see a lot of posts on social media of horse owners worried about hoof cracks, and often wondering if they can do something to help.
So what are some causes of hoof cracks?:
✴️A diet issue or imbalance - poor wall quality due to low levels of (or imbalanced levels of) minor minerals, poor amino acid profile or low protein in diet, high sugar/starch, etc can lead to poor wall quality that breaks or cracks easily.
✴️Hoof balance issues - excess pressure and load on a certain area or a hoof imbalance can overextend an already weak area of the wall and perpetuate wall cracks.
✴️Laminae issues - a weak laminae connection lends more susceptibility to flaring and excess leverage that can lead to cracking.
✴️Metabolic issues- on a similar vein to the last comment, metabolic issues, especially if undiagnosed or unregulated, can lead to a weakened wall and weak laminae connection. That includes PPID or EMS/IR.
✴️Toe crena/P3 bone loss or remodeling - if the coffin bone (P3) has an area of bone damage, whether congenital or due to pathology over time, the corium around that area can be damaged, making healthy wall production difficult and cause that area to be susceptible to a crack (see The Horse article with Paige Poss on wall cracks and what's underneath them!).
✴️Trim cycle - a cycle that is too long for the individual horse, especially one with weaker walls due to the problems above, can lead to wall cracking issues that are hard to get on top of if the cycle isn't shortened.
✴️Bacteria/microbial issue - sometimes, microbes can invade a weaker area of wall and eat away at the tissue underneath, perpetuating wall quality issues. This can often take topical treatment, sometimes exposing these areas to air to make anaerobic bacteria less willing to "stick around," and a better mineral balanced diet can really help build quality wall that can better withstand these pathogens.
✴️An old injury - some wall cracks stem from a scar from an injury just above the hairline that involved the coronary band. These will usually grow out to a superficial line if properly addressed.
Some horses with hoof wall cracking might need a diet adjustment, some might need a different cycle length, and some might need even need a different approach to their trim. Talk to your hoofcare provider if you're concerned, and see if there's anything you can do to work on growing them out!
