So where did Jango go Friday? He went to get fitted for a custom wheelchair. You might remember, Jango had one made for him over a year ago but it wound up not working out as well as we had hoped. And then there was another big reason…

In March of this year, Jango became a rear double amputee. This was not a decision that was made lightly by the rescue and us, his foster family. It was a joint decision made with careful consideration of all the factors. Jango had a history of chronic issues with his rear legs with the most serious and concerning being self mutilation. It was clear that the legs that served no purpose to him, got caught between crate bars and furniture as he ran around the house, kept him from being able to get a regular wheelchair, put him at risk of infection and open wounds, required every-other-day bandage changes, and more…had to be removed. They were an obstacle in his being his (very) active self and maintaining good health and physical condition.

At the consultation, his surgeon and her colleagues were in agreement that amputation would do nothing but enhance his quality of life and there were no concerns given his uniqueness. With that, Jango had surgery the next day and came through like a champ while impressing his surgeon and nurses! There WAS one problem post-surgery…

After one day of needing timely pain medication and wanting nothing more than to sleep, Jango decided he didn’t want to comply with the recovery rules. Nope! He didn’t want to be restricted and rest. He became so rammy we had to hold him constantly to keep his incisions from opening. Jango made it clear that keeping still for two weeks was NOT going to be easy! Given the success of a surgery is greatly impacted by the success of adhering to recovery rules, we figured out ways for Jango to follow them. It wasn’t easy, and it was a LONG two weeks, but we all made it through!

Since surgery, Jango has been free from all the issues his legs caused him. No more obstacles, just a better quality of life. Oh, and he has picked up speed! Stay tuned for video!

When Halfway Home Animal Rescue Team (HHART) agreed to take Jango into the rescue, they were expecting a three-week old puppy with Swimmer Syndrome. Upon picking Jango up from the surrendering family, it was quickly determined that he was severely deformed and hind paralyzed.

Since that determination, HHART has supported Jango through planned and emergency veterinary visits, orthotics, and more. They didn't give up, they stepped up. Without this commitment, Jango would have been euthanized.

Without public support and donations, HHART cannot help the animals in need, whether their needs are great or small. Today, despite his congenital deformity, Jango is a capable and rambunctious boy living a happy life. We have the HHART donors to thank for that!

The effect Covid has had on charitable donations is devastating due to fundraising events have being canceled people falling on hard times, financially. The hardest times bring the greatest needs, and so Greenway Mortgage presented HHART with a tremendous opportunity!
