Why do we teach "place" as a basic command?
1 - Training Foundation: The "place" command is essential for building a strong foundation; it enhances communication and attention between you and your dog, making future training sessions more effective.
2 - Behavioral Control: The "place" command provides a clear and consistent way to manage your dog's behavior. It helps establish boundaries and reinforces your role as the leader. This can be particularly useful in situations where you want your dog to stay calm, safe, or attentive.
3 - Manners: Teaching your dog to go to a designated place is a life saver when you have guests or visitors—especially those who may be uncomfortable around dogs. It allows you to have better control over your dog's interactions and helps create a positive environment for everyone involved.
4 - Reducing Anxiety: For some dogs, having a designated place can create a sense of security and reduce anxiety. This is especially true in new environments or when faced with unfamiliar stimuli. The command can serve as a cue for your dog to find a safe spot and stay calm.
5 - Tricks: As shown in some of the photos, it's a pretty cool party trick to show your dog's talent to "place" on a fire hydrant, playground toys, or whatever climbable object is around!

Few things are more precious or more fleeting than puppyhood. Those clumsy, oversized paws; those soft, floppy ears; and what about that puppy breath!?!?
But all of that adorableness quickly fades when adolescence hits and it's nonstop nipping, chewing, chasing, and in some cases, utter destruction.
No, no, we're not trying to dissuade you from bringing another dog into your home—quite the contrary. We want you to be prepared and avoid those "terrible twos" (which in dog years is about 4 to 9 months) by consulting with a trainer early because like most things in life, prevention is key.
If a new pup may appear under your Christmas tree this year, ask Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley about our free in-home consultations today.

We're proud to partner with the Malinois Foundation—a charity that started out providing service dogs to support veterans, but now also provides service dogs for first responders, women survivors, and children with medical needs. Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley provides training support for the life of each placed dog in our area.
November is a time to reflect on all we're grateful for, and it's also a time to give to those in need. Please consider supporting this wonderful charity before the year is over! We have seen firsthand the many lives that have been changed.

25/10/2023

Dogs' excitement for feeding time and passion for food is one of the very things that makes them so receptive to training; however, some dogs love their food so much, they consume it in less than 30 seconds! Not only is this unhealthy for them (causing bloating and choking hazards), but it also limits the time they get to enjoy their dinner.
Consider trying out some of these suggestions for slowing down feeding time—making it both more enjoyable and safer. Dogs are natural scavengers, so sniffing out and searching for food is a highly rewarding experience for them!
For some dogs, food is so special to them, they become aggressive. If your dog exhibits "resource guarding" like this and you worry about other animals or children in the vicinity, reach out to Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley for help!

In an apocalypse void of humans, would domestic dogs survive?
For most dogs, the answer is likely yes. "I have no doubt that dogs would survive without us," Jessica Pierce, author of 'A Dog's World: Imagining the Lives of Dogs in a World without Humans' (2021), said in an interview with Live Science. "Dogs are descended from wolves and they still have much of the behavioral repertoire of wolves and other wild canids, so they know how to hunt and scavenge."
Although they wouldn't look wild right away (like domesticated pigs do after only a year of living wild) they would breed with wolves and form social orders, as feral dogs in many parts of the world already do. Behaviors like digging, mating, roaming, and urinating wouldn't be suppressed by humans, so although they wouldn't be as comfortable, many experts believe dogs would be quite happy without us….just as long as they have food!

Have you decided on your dog's costume yet? Still thinking? Maybe just going to save a buck and reuse last year's taco costume and spend the money on your costume instead?
Here's the thing: your dog doesn't care—they just care about being with you. So, whether it's a superhero costume, a stormtrooper, or an 80's punk rocker, putting your dog in a costume is a way to show them that you're up for a good time and that you're willing to embrace the absurdity and fun of life together.
So go ahead, dress up your dog, have a laugh, and create some unforgettable memories, but PLEASE share your doggy costume pics with us!

Did you know Fall Equinox falls on September 23 this year? That means Saturday is the first official day of fall—"weather" it feels like it or not!
Not all dogs enjoy wearing fall sweaters, but we happen to think they're pretty stinkin adorable, so if you have a photo of your dog wearing a sweater, please send it to us and we might just feature it in our feed!

Every dog owner has been there.
You come home and find that your cherished pair of Jordans became your dog's favorite chew toy while you were away. Your jaw drops...you gasp; seeing this, your dog suddenly looks guilty and scampers out of the room. You demand he comes back because clearly, he knows what he did wrong….or does he?
The truth is that your dog does NOT "feel" guilt over past misdeeds. When a dog has done something we consider "bad," they don't connect that action with guilt or wrongdoing like humans do. While dogs do experience emotions like fear, happiness, and excitement, they don't experience complex moral emotions like guilt or shame.
Second, dogs primarily live in the present moment. When a dog looks guilty after a perceived misdeed, they are reacting in that moment to their owner's body language and tone of voice and responding with submission to the owner's displeasure rather than understanding the past wrongdoing itself.
"But sometimes, my dog runs and hides as soon as I get home and before he even sees me," you may say. Unfortunately, this may be because he has frequently been scolded upon your arrival home, and your smart dog has just learned to avoid punishment.
The rule of thumb is that if you don't catch your dog in the very act of misbehaving, your opportunity to correct him has passed. And second, if your dog isn't trustworthy while you're away, it's best to keep him in a safe place where he can't get into trouble!
Need help with your dog's manners at home? Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley can help! Send us a message today.

"Ruffing" it with dogs is one of our absolute favorite weekend activities. Here are 6 superb reasons why we think you should try it:

1. Quality Bonding Time: Camping away from the distractions of daily life provides an opportunity to bond with your dog on a deeper level. You can engage deeply in activities together, share meals, and simply relax by the campfire.

2. Shared Experiences: Dogs have a way of making even simple experiences feel special. Whether it's sitting under the stars, listening to the sounds of nature, or exploring a new trail, these shared moments can create lasting memories.

3. Enhanced Safety: Dogs have keen senses and can alert you to potential dangers or unfamiliar animals in the area, adding an extra layer of security to your camping experience.

4. Social Interaction: Dogs are often great icebreakers and can help you connect with other campers. You might find yourself engaging in conversations and forming new friendships thanks to your dog's presence.

5. Minimal Judgments: Your dog doesn't care if you don't shower, if you're wearing the same clothes for days, or if you sing off-key around the campfire. A dog is a completely judgment-free best friend.

6. Memorable Photographs: Dogs are photogenic and can add an extra element of charm to your camping selfies!

Not sure if your dog is ready to go camping? Give Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley a call and we'll discuss it! 801-690-7660

Could a service dog improve your life or the life of someone you love? There are basically three paths to owning one of these amazing animals—you can buy a fully trained dog from a training facility (the most expensive option), receive assistance from a non-profit service animal provider such as The Malinois Foundation, or you can train a puppy for your specific needs with the help of a professional trainer at Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley.

With the heatwave upon us, we trainers at Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley would like to share some tips to help keep your furry friend cool and comfortable. Here's a helpful guide:

1. Provide Ample Shade: When outdoors, ensure that your dog has access to shade throughout the day, especially during the hottest hours. Whether it's a covered porch, a tree, or a well-positioned umbrella, shade will help protect your dog from direct sunlight.

2. Fresh Water at All Times: Keep a constant supply of fresh, cool water available for your pup. Consider using a large, sturdy water bowl that won't easily tip over, and remember to refill it regularly. You can even add ice cubes to the water to provide extra refreshment.

3. Avoid Midday Walks: Walking on hot pavement can be uncomfortable and potentially burn your dog's paws. If you're unsure, test the pavement temperature with your hand before taking your pup out.

4. Cooling Mats or Wet Towels: If you don't have solid-surface floors that are naturally cool, provide your dog with a cooling mat or a damp towel for them to lie on. You can also wet your dog's paws, stomach, and ears with cool water to help lower their body temperature.

5. Indoor Activities: If it's sweltering outside, engage your dog in indoor activities to keep them entertained and cool. Play with them using interactive toys, teach them new tricks, or indulge in a fun game of tug.

6. Frozen Treats: Freeze dog-friendly ingredients like yogurt, pureed fruits, or even a mixture of water and low-sodium chicken broth in ice cube trays or as popsicles. These frozen treats can provide a delightful cooldown for your pup.

7. Avoid Leaving Your Dog in the Car: Never leave your dog unattended in a parked car, even for a short period. Cars can quickly become dangerously hot—EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN—leading to heatstroke or worse. It's always better to leave your furry friend at home if you can't take them with you.

Stay cool and enjoy your summer! Never hesitate to call us at 801-690-7660 if you have any questions!

Does your dog deal with fireworks nerves? DTE is here to help with the following tips and tricks for this unintentionally scary holiday!
1. Create a Safe Space: Prepare a quiet, cozy spot in your home where your dog can retreat to. Fill it with their favorite toys, blankets, and perhaps an item that smells like you, such as a shirt, to provide a sense of familiarity and security.
2. Background Noise: Drown out the sound of fireworks by playing some soothing background noise, like classical music or nature sounds. This can help mask the sudden bursts of noise and create a more relaxing environment for your pup.
3. Close the Curtains: Dim the lights and close the curtains to minimize the visual stimulation from the fireworks. This can help reduce your dog's anxiety by blocking out the flashes and bursts of light.
4. Stay Calm and Positive: Dogs are highly perceptive and can pick up on your emotions. Stay calm and act as normally as possible, as your dog will look to you for cues on how to react. Offer reassuring words, gentle strokes, and treats when they exhibit calm behavior.
5. Distraction and Engagement: Engage your dog in activities they enjoy, such as playing games or practicing their favorite tricks. Redirecting their attention to something positive can help shift their focus away from the fireworks.
6. Consult a Vet: If your dog's anxiety is severe or if you've tried various techniques without success, consider reaching out to a veterinarian. They can provide additional advice or recommend anxiety-reducing products or medications if necessary.
Remember, every dog is unique, so it might take some trial and error to find the strategies that work best for your furry friend. Be patient and understanding, and always prioritize their safety and well-being. And if your dog deals with anxiety in general, consult with an expert at Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley today for help!

When it comes to walking our dogs, choosing the right equipment is crucial for their safety and comfort. Let's weigh the pros and cons of both options:

Dog Harness:

1. Safety first! Harnesses distribute pressure evenly across the chest, reducing strain on your dog's neck and throat. This is especially important for small breeds, brachycephalic dogs, and those with respiratory issues.
2. Improved control: Harnesses offer better control over your dog's movements, making it easier to guide them during walks.
3. Added security: Some harnesses come with reflective straps or built-in handles, which increase visibility and allow for quick restraint when needed.

Dog Collar:

1. Simplicity and convenience: Collars are quick to put on and remove, making them suitable for dogs who are already well-behaved on walks.
2. ID tags and licenses: Collars provide a convenient place to attach identification tags, making it easier to identify your pup if they ever get lost.
3. Suitable for short-haired dogs: Collars don't interfere with a dog's natural movement and can be more comfortable for breeds with short coats.

Remember, every dog is unique, and their specific needs should be considered. Never tolerate pulling on a leash no matter what device you use! Call Dog Training Elite Tooele Valley today for help if your walks aren't exactly enjoyable. !
