As promised in last nightâs liveâŚ
âď¸ Storm Preparedness âď¸
âď¸ Provide a safe space.
This could be a kennel, a bathroom, or your closet. Some dogs will naturally seek out a space that feels comfortable to them. Let them have it.
âď¸ Engage in an activity.
âActivityâ can be anything from daycare the day of or before a storm, or a nice long walk. During a storm, you might try offering a stuffed Toppl, snuffle mat, or an inside game of fetch. Be prepared by prepping and freezing your Toppl now or putting that snuffle mat in your cart.
âď¸ Try a Thundershirt or calming wrap.
Whichever of these, you choose, be sure you introduce it a few minutes at a time on a pretty day. I also recommend trying it a few times before giving up. In my experience, the effects can be cumulative- meaning it works a little better each time you use it.
âď¸ Utilize dog appeasing pheromones and/or calming treats such as CBD.
Your pheromone product can be sprayed on a cloth collar, bandanna, or bedding. Calming treats should be administered at least 20 minutes prior to the expected storm.
âď¸ Play music.
Utilize music or white noise to muffle the sounds. Research has shown dogs prefer traditional reggae, soft rock, and/or anything tuned to 432 Hz.
If all else fails, call your vet for a prescription medication.
We are approaching a very not fun time of year for many of you and your pets. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in the comments.
