Mushroom lovers! Join the Bluegrass Mycological Society for another mushroom foray on Sunday, November 12th at the gorgeous Red River Gorge. There will be an exceptional number of seasoned veterans joining us at this foray, ready to share their knowledge and wisdom from the field. We're expecting a large turnout and there will be a shuttle to take us to the trail from a parking area ($10/person; more details on group transportation from Neelun Lew in the first comment)

This is the perfect opportunity for enthusiasts of all levels to learn about local fungi while exploring nature. You'll learn to identify mushrooms, distinguish edible vs. poisonous species, photograph specimens, and document details.

We'll upload finds to iNaturalist and Mushroom Observer to contribute to these invaluable citizen science databases. No matter your experience, you'll gain practical ID skills and understand how mushroom documentation assists future scientific research and conservation.

Bring your enthusiasm for fungi and prepare embark on a mycological journey. Forays connect us to nature, community, and forest wisdom. Don't miss it!

Hey y'all! I took the small leftover umbrella bag we inoculated at our Kentucky Mushroom Festival workshop, and we're getting some nice colonization.

If youre seeing some growth similar to this, then now is a good time to "break and shake" as we discussed. This will create more points of inoculation and speed the remainder of the process.

Thanks to our friend, Robert Jones for the nice picture of the full-sized bag.

Best of luck to you all.

Join us November 4th 2023 at the beautiful
in Elizabeth, Indiana as we gather to honor the changing of the seasons in celebration of the Gaelic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of harvest season and the start of Winter.

On this mycological journey, we'll discuss the symbiotic role of mushrooms between the realms of life and death. Learn about forest ecology, mycoremediation, the life cycle of mushrooms, and their associations with Autumn and Samhain, as well as practical methods of cultivation and extraction for potent natural remedies.

From ancient mythology and folklore, to the revival of mystery in modern times, we’ll explore the ways in which traditions from cultures both past and present are merging to honor the fungal kingdom today. Reflect on the parallels between mycelial networks and our own interconnectedness. Consider humanity's timeless relationship with fungi for nourishment, medicine, and guidance. Gain new perspectives on renewal that comes through decay.

Sometimes it can feel like we're helpless against the challenges of the world. In these times, it's always good to remember our communities.

As Margaret Mead says, change always starts when a small group of people commit themselves to the change. Much like mycelium, change grows and spreads, frequently underground or on decaying matter...but it always starts with a small group of committed people.

May this gentle reminder encourage and lift you when you most need it. 🙏💚🌿

For a first run experiment, couldn't be happier with the way this freeze-dried full-spectrum Lion's Mane powder turned out.
This particular batch is 2:1 fruiting body to mycelium. The consistency is great.

If you're interested in medicinal mushrooms/ functional mushrooms, Lion's Mane, Cordyceps militaris, Reishi, etc and have found a brand you really love, you might want to stay tuned.

Thanks to the support and encouragement from community members on this project!

"Russula identification is a joke" - Michael Kuo

A common North American genus of mycorrhizal fungi that are easyily identified to genus but can be complicated and often described as "a nightmare" to narrow down to species - even microscopic assessment can be frustrating, but they're sure fun to find and photograph!

"This polarity between Self-Assertive and Integrative tendencies is inherent in the concept of hierarchic order; and a universal characteristic of life. " -Arthur Koestler, The Ghost in the Machine

Anastomosis between genetically different mycelia of the same or closely related species sets the stage for varying outcomes of genomic interplay between nuclear and mitochondrial populations. These outcomes range from the stable 'merger' of fully compatible basidomycete matings, through various unstable associations culminating in genomic takeover, degeneracy or complex phenotypic emergence, to the mutual rejection characteristic of a somatic incompatibility response.
